Could I Pull This Dress Off?
 

One of my bridesmaids is an excellent seamstress, and I've been looking at patterns for my wedding dress (which will be emerald green silk). I'm wondering if I'd be able to pull off this dress:

But the only reason I'm not sure is because I'm rather hippy (measurements: 33.5", 25.5", 39.5" ) and I've only ever seen slim, straight-up-and-down women and girls wearing mermaid-style dresses. What do you all think? Should I go for it?

NOTE: The "hip" measurement was taken around my ass, and I have an apple bottom, which is why it's bigger. Visually, from the front, my hips are only slightly wider than my chest.

Actually, if you look at the picture the model does have SOME hips. Actually, I think those kind of dresses look better on girls with a little more curve. Have you ever watched the show Say Yes to the Dress? It's a show set in a bridal boutique. You could compare. Or you could try doing a search for something similar online. In my opinion though, I think you would excellent!

I think that you'll be fine. I mean, they don't really show the back of the models on those pictures and I think that it would still look perfect on you. So don't worry!

It isn't something I wouldn't wear as a wedding dress, but it does look interesting. It's your wedding though, so do whatever you want. I'm sure there are many people out there who can pull it off, with you being one of them

I'm not a fan of the mermaid design for wedding dresses, but as long as you have it tailored to your specific shape, I'm sure it would be just stunning!

i have a very similar dress, and my measurements are 35 28 35 and it looks really good on me :D but then again, i'm also tall and have a slim look but when i wear that dress it makes my hourglass shape really stand out- but in a very good way ;) hope that helps?

I think that you will be able to pull it off. Dresses like that are meant for girls with your body type. Girls that are slim/ slender can't really pull the dress off all that well.
The dress requires shape, and if you ask me, I think you're body has the great shape for that dress.

If you are still worried about it, find a mermaid style dress and try it on, if you think that it looks great on you, then by all means make your wedding dress that style. It's your big day, do what you want to do and dress the way that you want to dress. You're supposed to be happy about everything that day :)

Thanks for the help, all. :) I couldn't find any dresses in a similar style, but I'll take the pattern to a seamstress my MOH recommended and see what she can do.

I have hips (From hell..) and I wore a fish tale dress before; and it looked AWESOME. So yes, I think you can pull it off! If my big butt can; you can! :)

You should do that, If you've love handles(Fat around the hips) then put some decorations on other body parts ^^

I like all the dresses but I'm not sure if they're fancy enough for a wedding. But they're really pretty, especially the blue one. ^.^

Well, the wedding's only semi-formal dress, and I'd drown in a huge fancy dress since I'm pretty small. xD I do love the blue one, though.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding. I love that dress, and the only way you will know, is try it on. If you feel comfortable in it, you like the dress, then go for it. It is your wedding, do it the way you want. Hopefully, it will be one to remember. Good luck and again congrats.

Go for it! You can pull it off. I hate people that say "you can't wear x because you're not y." Who cares as long as you like it, you feel good and confident in it?

Btw I don't think the mermaid style dress is bad for hippier women at all. Work it! :)

The only problem I'd have with this style is that I'm a shorty, and this style has the potential to make me look even shorter. I've kind of ruled out this style already and am looking at shorter swing dresses instead, but I do appreciate your feedback. :)
