Pets that Chew... EVERYTHING

So my mum (that's mom to you Americans) got a puppy. This puppy has decided that everything in the house is a chew toy. My pencils, my cellphone, mm and dad's photo albums, Anything within reach... which is a lot of things. she isn't small.

So has anybody here got a pet that's very ... chewy?

Ugh I know how that goes. My current dog, whom is much older now, used to chew everything... She loved to cuddle on an antique bed with me and whenever I fell asleep I'd wake up to the sound of her chewing on the wood, tearing chunks off of it... The bed basically lost its value. She also chewed holes into the soles of my favorite shoes. I know how you feel!

jazzkitteh 05-04-2010 06:35 AM

my dog and cat both did that when they were babies. My cat especially. Always used to freak me out when I could look over and my moron of a cat was chewing on a power cord. xD

Lord Frappuccino 05-04-2010 08:07 AM

Haha, yes... I actually had a cat that lit itself on fire before (it ended up totally fine) it was pretty damn funny afterwords but scared the hell out of us!

jazzkitteh 05-04-2010 10:07 AM

LOL That is hilarious. xD I think I would die of laughter if my moron of a cat caught himself on fire. At least I would after putting him out with the hose and making sure he was alright.

We have a puppy that likes to chew on papers, tissues, shoes, and more. Whatever is in reach, he will probably try and eat it. Though he's not as bad as some of the other dogs that we used to have that did that. Though our dogs have a lot of toys around the house to chew up, so they don't get into that much trouble.

I would restrict your dog to a pen or use those room divider made for toddlers. Then give your dog the appropriate chew toys with some praise.

My mom has a female dog that use to chew up her cell phone charger's. as a puppy that is but she out grew it othern then chewing on under ware.

Her 1 year old dog Levi he just eats about are chews on any thing. he finds around the house he'll eat ear plugs, a pair of head phones that I had. we nick name him the goat and my little pony cause he is so tall.

My dog is a mix breed her name is Pippi she likes to chew on paper towl roll's and toilet paper roll's mostly. oh I forgot she like to chew on pads as well Yuck!

My 11-year old dog (the one that I mentioned earlier as a puppy) still chews up tissues that are in trash cans as punishment for us leaving her in the house most of the day if we are out from work. Its quite annoying- unsure how to stop it at this age lol

I'm American and I know what Mum means o.o

Heh, Anyways... my dog used to chew on the carpet when he was a puppy. Thank God he grew out of that. My guinea pig Shaggy chews on my shirt. I'm not sure why, I guess it's her form of affection.

Bearzy 05-05-2010 06:03 AM

@Claudia: Bella could jump them, she's quite big.

I'm English and i use mom XD

Anyway. Yes, my dog had a chewing phase when he was young, as they all do. He especially liked feet and shoes, not so much furniture.
You can purchase 'anti-dog spray' but how effective it is i couldn't say. Try buying some hide bones, or a Kong, and encourage her to chew with those instead. I imagine confining her to a specific space might just serve to make her more aggitated.

I've had a lot of dogs that did that as puppies. He's teething most likely, and will be a very happy pooch if you get him a chew toy. I've found that most go crazy for leather.

Sho-Shonojo 05-05-2010 09:22 PM

My dogs all went through chewing phases when they were puppies. One of my dogs almost choked when he chewed of a 4 inch piece of vertical blinds. My dad luckily walked in and noticed him. He had to use a pair of pliers to pull it out. Needless to say we switched to a different kind of shades for our back door.

My chinchillas also love to chew on things, but that's a rodent thing. I have to go buy them wood toys or give them walnuts so they'll stop chewing on their plastic shelves.

My cat chews on shoes... and purse straps... and drawstrings... and pretty much anything else that looks like a toy. It's usually not enough to be noticeable, but I did have a pair of flip-flops that got pretty raggedy after all the chewing. XD

Angelicious3 05-05-2010 10:19 PM

Well no because we usually keep our pet outside when we used to have a pet.

Aninaj 05-06-2010 12:48 AM

I have a ferret and he chews on everything... including me lol I have to be careful and keep an eye on him when he runs around because ferrets are notorious for chewing electrical wires and such and hurting themselves.

Squeaks 05-06-2010 01:01 AM

my one cat annie would always chew on wires and paper XD

amam2217 05-06-2010 04:26 AM

That's normal for a puppy. Ours is about seven months old, and she likes to gnaw on the leg chairs and yank up carpet strands with her teeth. She also has a tendency to eat her own poo, so we have to pick it up everyday. She definitely isn't as bad as she used to be.

Staria 05-06-2010 04:41 AM

I'm attempting to be a chinchilla breeder so yeah >.>..... they literally do chew everything including electric cords and the like so i have to make sure nothing is remotely near their cage or they will pull it in and chew till it's destroyed XD.

Sidhe 05-08-2010 06:49 PM

My current cat doesnt have THAT bad of a chewing problem..
But once I caught him eating construction paper behind my door.. :gonk:

Bearzy 05-10-2010 05:45 AM

Bella.. my puppy. Chewed up my boyfriends copy of the first wheel of time book... oops.

melonmilk 05-10-2010 06:11 AM

Not really. My cat chews my arm, though, for some reason. But she's pretty good at sticking to that. -__-

When our dog had puppies we had eight puppies stationed in the living room at one point... When they hit the chewing stage, they decided an antique cabinet was their chew of choice! As well as the coffee table, couch, random objects, a book I'd been looking for, the wooden room divider, and so much else...

And while we puppy-proofed the living room, giving the table, couch, and cabinet up for lost, and bought them some hard to demolish chew toys, apparently that wasn't enough for them.... because they decided they needed to chew on the walls as well!
