I am in the West. I got that Line from a Californian.

Jeannesha 06-02-2010 03:22 AM

I know very little of any other language.

Xandriana 06-02-2010 03:23 AM

I can say I don't speak .... in 4 languages. Can't spell it but I can say it.

scholar 06-02-2010 03:23 AM

@Xandriana: You think so? Odd, you're the first Californian I've heard say that. :P

@Jean: Knowing a foreign language or two is really fun. Especially Japanese -- once I started learning that, I was suddenly struck by how easy it was to read any language using the Roman alphabet.

RetroFit 06-02-2010 03:24 AM

*pops back in* ohlala! Le francais! C'est le langue seulement que je parle qui n'est pas englais... ou... est qu'on dis 'qui ce n'est pas?' Ca ne fait rien!

Jeannesha 06-02-2010 03:24 AM

I took German in college, but it didn't stick....

Rad Lionheart 06-02-2010 03:25 AM

I can't cross the border.

RetroFit 06-02-2010 03:25 AM

I took like 7 years of french... lol.

Xandriana 06-02-2010 03:25 AM

No I live in the North West I heard it at Norwescon from a gal who lives in Clai.

scholar 06-02-2010 03:26 AM

@Retro: Funny, I just passed a reading exam in French for my degree, translating a scholarly article, but what you say makes little sense past:

"Oh, goody! French! That's the only language I speak that isn't English... or, [can't follow]"

@Xandra: Clai?

Xandriana 06-02-2010 03:26 AM

*shudder* I will never get used to that nickname, and I've lived in California almost all my life, excepting my years in Europe.

Jeannesha 06-02-2010 03:27 AM

I'd like to learn spanish...

scholar 06-02-2010 03:27 AM

There are loads of courses for Spanish online, some free, and you can always do Rosetta Stone or something like that.

I know... I was about to say... I speak 7 years of french but you can't tell... it was on and off so I forget grammer... the part after that was meant to be "or does one say (the other option i thought might have been the correct way to say that)"

EDIT: oh... and then how do you say it doesn't matter... that's the phrase that came to my head but I'm not sure.

scholar 06-02-2010 03:29 AM

Ah, I get that now.

I had four years in high school, and I read it rather well with a dictionary (at least according to my school's guidelines), but as far as constructing a sentence, GAH I'm rusty.

Next year I'll be taking third year Japanese, and I'm so excited! This summer I'm going to try to read a bio of Hayao Miyazaki in Japanese, but I suspect it'll take me all summer to get through a few pages.

Yeah... that's where I have trouble too. I'm much more comfortable speaking and comprehending than writing too.

scholar 06-02-2010 03:31 AM

Oh, I can't speak it anymore, I think. It would come out Japanese.

Or Dutch!! XD

RetroFit 06-02-2010 03:32 AM

lol... I always wanted to learn other languages, but I knew that meant I would lose what little French I retain to begin with.

Xandriana 06-02-2010 03:33 AM

Dutch not Deutsche?

WeRtheDead 06-02-2010 03:33 AM

Hello all

scholar 06-02-2010 03:33 AM

Not necessarily, I think. My French lay dormant when I tried to learn Dutch, and I think if I were immersed in it for a few weeks, it would come back.

----------

Yes, Dutch: the language of the Netherlands.

On a side note: YouTube - Crazy Cat Loves Water Run On His Head To Get Drink OMG AWWWWWW!

scholar 06-02-2010 03:37 AM

OMG LURVE.

My cats will daintily drink from a running tap, but never stick their heads in deliberately!

... Is the thread empty? *is lonely*

RetroFit 06-02-2010 03:40 AM

Nooo... not empty... well, besides me and Dead maybe

it did get a lot slower though
