I have a lot of favourite things about Egypt and I really couldn't choose one over the others.. I love their afterlife rituals, including mummification; I love the written language and art in general, they had a really great style and a true appreciation of beauty [in my opinion]; their accomplishments [the pyramids] and the mystery surrounding that, even now there's so much we don't know about what happened then. It's all very cool.
---------- Also, I think I meant The Bangles and not The Gogos. I just noticed that I have the song on my iTunes by both artists and they sound the same, so I'm trying to figure out who's actually singing it [with the help of YouTube]. |
I think that people are attracted to the ancient Egyptians because, in the things they've left behind, they give the impression that they are somehow closer to the heartbeat of the universe than us...
|
If I had to choose between going back in time or going ahead in time, I would choose to go back in time so I can learn about their ways of life.
|
Yesh...cute til you get to the end.
'Long ago on the ship she asked she asked why pyramids, he said think of them as an immense invitation.' <---song's reasoning behind pyramids. |
An invitation to what? O.o death?
And generally, I would choose going backwards as well ^.^ |
Well the pyramids were made to match with a constellation in the sky. I can't remember which. And each of them point to the cardinal directions.
|
Yep, I meant The Bangles.
That brings up an interesting question Elvilla. So for everyone in the chat, if you could go anywhere in time, where and when would you go? Personally, I'd want to see the dinosaurs. |
Dun ask me. Guess you're meant to infer whatever you want. Perhaps death in a manner...or perhaps just an invitation to view the past.
|
@ Elvilla: It's Orion's belt. They ancient Egyptians believed that was where Osiris, god of the underworld, resided.
|
As much as I want to go and stop the person who shot Abraham Lincoln, I have no idea how the future would be altered. So I think I need to make another point. Would we be stuck in the time in which we chose? If we had to go back to our normal time, I wouldn't go to do anything that could change our futures. If we stayed in the past, I would probably try to be a hero somehow.
@Cardinal- So the song could have meant an invitation to death as Seridano said. If the Egyptians made the pyramids to signify the god of the underworld, it would make sense that the invitation was for death. |
No altering, just observing. And choose your answers wisely you guys because you never know who's reading this chaaat.
coughdoctorwhocough |
To observe I would choose choose the time pyramid between Julius Caesar and Cleopatra. That way I could observe my two favorite places at once.
|
If we would be stuck, I think it would be best for us to stay where we are ^.^ But as a purely intellectual exercise, I would have a few choices. Ancient Egypt would be one, of course, perhaps during Hatsheput's reign. Heian period Japan would be another. Or the early Victorian era. Well, gosh, there are so many. The Tudor era also interests me. Italy in the time of the Borgias?
|
My own choice would be either the time of the American revolution or some time during England's Victorian era....probably the former, if only to meet the folks involved and be thrown into the midst of the ideas, the passion, and the glorious writing. *is a nerd* Though Italy during the time of the Borgias is an excellent one as well, and various period in Japanese history fascinate me as well. *is indecisive*
|
Haha. I'm on board with your thinking, Seri. I'm a little bit of a nerd myself. And a large bit dork.
|
England's Victorian era would be another choice of mine – how amazing would it be to meet one of your favourite authors that's been dead for centuries?
But I think that if I went back in time and could only go back to one time and place, I wouldn't do it to observe humanity. |
I wish there was a way for me to be in many places at once. There are so many things I want to experience that I missed out on. I want to know what it was like to live during a war where nuclear power was a threat. I want to live when people had to work on farms and harvest food. So many choices.
WAIT! I will travel in time to observe the city of Atlantis! @Harley- But if you visit the dinosaurs you might die. |
Yeah, when I said early Victorian I was thinking England. But I suppose rubbing shoulders with Poe wouldn't be too shabby ^.^
Oh, interesting thinking Elvilla! |
I would die to meet Poe. His gravestone bothers me. I believe it said something along the lines of "Edgar Allen Poe was buried here." Whenever I read it, I think to myself, "Then where is he buried now?"
|
Given the number of diseases that ran rampant during the periods we've mentioned and the lack of modern technology and medicines, there'd be a chance of dying a horrible death in most places/times.
|
Lol, elvilla
And yeah, I think about that sort of thing to, Seri. I think too much O.o |
Ditto Biggles. I tend to over think just about everything, which is likely why so many places and time periods jumped to mind all at once and made for a right jumble. ^.^; My mind works with providing me entirely too many things about even the simplest of things...making me impossibly indecisive more often than not. It's both a gift and a curse.
|
@Seridano- That is an excellent point to make. We could die during any of those times. I guess it just adds to the thrill of it all.
@all- I am going to bed. My body is still trying to get into a normal sleep pattern after not being able to sleep for days. TTYL |
Okies, dear.
Sleep well. ^.^ |
I wouldn't mind getting eating by a dinosaur that much, I mean really. Of all the ways to go..
Besides, there are no wonders in today's world like seeing living dinosaurs. God knows what my reaction would be. Night Elvilla ~ |
