"Cereal." Adeline said, giving Lora an odd look. "It's breakfast." She murmured before turning to Ben. "I'm going to go get changed now and I'll see you at school." She smiled before disappearing, breakfast in hand, to get ready for the day.
"It's a different type of breakfast. If you put cereal and milk togeth it'd pretty good." Ben explained as he began eating his toast. |
"What's..... cereal?" Lorabelle asked as she turned to Ben and sat down at the table, finishing her apple as she pondered. "The magic box doesn't talk about it when they cook... Is it something new?"
"No." Ben shook his head. "There's all different types of cereal but mostly it's little flavored bits that you eat in the morning, some even has fruit bits in it. It all depends on the kind you buy." Ben explained patiently.
"So it's not something you can make? It's something you have to buy from someone? Why can't you make it at home?" Lorabelle asked as she ate a slice of toast. "It looked really pretty, the cereal that Adeline was eating. How do they make it so colorful?"
"They added colors into it. And no, we can't make it at home. They use machines to make them, that's how some cereals have cool shapes and other's are colored like my fruit loops." Ben explained before standing up. "I have to get to class soon but thank you for breakfast, Lora. I only have one class today so I'll see you in a couple of hours." He assured her, giving her hand a light squeeze before picking up his backpack and heading to school.
Lorabelle pondered as she took another bite of her toast. "Machines, hmm. I guess this world truly relies on them, don't they... No wonder the Court sent me here," Lorabelle added sadly before finishing her breakfast and cleaning up the mess from breakfast.
When Ben's class was finished he stretched, preparing to lift his backpack which not only had yesterday's homework left in it but this today's as well. "Hey, Ben. A few of us were going to the pub tonight. Wanna come?" One of his friends asked as the students began to file out.
"I don't know guys. I've got alot of work to do. Maybe." He answered before listing his backpack onto his shoulder, waving his goodbyes, and heading back to the apartment building. |
With breakfast cleaned up, Lorabelle went about making lunch for she and Ben, as well as Adeline for Lorabelle didn't know if she were coming back to the apartment when Ben did or not.
For today's lunch, Lorabelle decided to try and replicate the cheese sandwich Ben had made the previous night for them for dinner. Taking out every sort of cheese she saw in the fridge, Lorabelle placed them on the counter before getting the other items needed for the sandwich that she saw Ben using. For each sandwich, Lorabelle used two pieces of cheese, and they were different combinations each time. Some were a bit burnt, some were a little too light, but others were pretty decent. By the time Lorabelle was finished, she had the cheese gone and three plates piled with sandwiches. |
Ben yawned as he walked into his apartment, dropping his bag on the table before going to the kitchen where he detected a burning smell. "Lora?" He asked and laughed when he saw the grilled cheese piled up. "It seems I have a budding chef on my hands." He said as he walked over and wrapped the girl in a tight hug before letting go and taking a sandwich from the top of the pile. "I think you may have my sandwich beat." He smiled at her after taking a bite.
Lorabelle grinned as she clapped her hands together, "You like it? Honest? I'm so happy! I've been working on it the past hour and I think I've made every combination possible with the cheeses you had in the fridge. I don't know what they were, but there was this wholey one, this orange one, different shaped white ones," Lorabelle listed as she went through what the cheeses looked like.
"Are there more cheeses?" Lorabelle asked excitedly as she sat down at the table with one of the plates and began digging in. Noticing Adeline didn't come home with Ben, Lorabelle asked curious, "Is Adeline not coming?" |
"She has longer classes then I do today. She'll be back later and I'll help her move her stuff down to Gina and Jack's apartment." Ben explained, having a small urge to kiss Lora again and then repressed it. "There's lots of cheeses out there you can buy. Do you want to go shopping later? I'm going to need to stock up on cheese anyways now that its in all these sandwiches." Ben smiled.
Lorabelle laughed and she nodded excitedly, "Yes! And then I can look for what that man called a job. Although I'm not sure how good I would be and helping.... I still don't know your language very well, especially not the written form of it... But I hate not being able to help. That man said that currency and money is a big part of this world," Lorabelle added as she finished off another sandwich. One thing Lorabelle was happy about at the moment was the fact that she had more room in her stomach now that she was human, and her appetite was still the same was it was when she was a fairy -- big.
"You know, human food tastes much yummier than what we eat as fairies... What makes human food taste so yummy?" Lorabelle asked curious as she bit into another sandwich. |
"Salt." Ben laughed as he finished off his sandwich and stole another. "Are you sure you want to find a job right now? You still have a lot to learn about our world and working is pretty difficult." He explained.
"But how can you have salt?" Lorabelle asked with confusion, "You don't have an ocean near here and you don't use it's waters. As for a job," Lorabelle continued, "is that not the only way I can help you and make it so you don't have to make sacrifices in order for me to stay here?"
"We collect salt and sell it in packages." Ben explained. "It makes everything taste better. Even if you add a pinch, just a pinch, to dessert it will make it taste sweeter. Pretty handy stuff." He nodded. "And if you insist on getting a job then we should start with something simple like a store clerk."
"What's a store clerk?" Lorabelle asked curiously between bites of sandwiches, "And how do you separate the salt from the water? I don't understand.."
"We don't get it from the ocean really." Ben explained. "There's caves and such that have rocks of salt. And store clerks fold clothing or stock shelves for people to go in a store to buy. You might have to work the register to but I think you're a fast learner." Ben encouraged.
"Rocks made of salt? Strange... I would very much like to see one," Lorabelle said happily with a laugh, "But what is a store, and a register, and a shelf, and stock? You are making me so very confused, and this job was supposed to be something easy!"
"I'm sorry. I keep forgetting that you don't understand these things." Ben shook his head. "I wish I was a better teacher for you." He sighed. "A register is what people calculate money on so they know how much to spend. And shelves are what you put the items on for people to buy." He tried to explain.
"But how do you know how much currency they give you and how much to give back? How do you... calculate?" Lorabelle asked as she finished off her plate of sandwiches.
"The register calculates it for you." Ben explained. "The item cost a certain amount of money and when the customers pay you then you'll put these numbers in the register then it will tell you how much money to give back to the customer."
"But how do you know what is what and how to distribute it?" Lorabelle asked, getting more and more confused as Ben tried to explain. "Perhaps I should not get a job just yet," Lorabelle said with a defeated sigh, "I shall wait until I understand more of the basic principles of this world and am sure I will not make more trouble than I am worth."
"Its alright, Lora. You are not a burden on me, I enjoy having your company here." Ben assured her as he polished off his second sandwich and leaned up against the counter. "And you'll learn these things eventually, with a horrible teacher like me it may take a bit longer." He teased with a laugh.
"You're not horrible," Lorabelle said reassuringly as she started to clean up the kitchen from her grilled cheese experiment, "I'm just complete and utterly confused about a great many things and do not fully understand the meanings behind the words I can speak. Isn't it strange? Being able to say words like register and store, but having no idea what they mean?" Lorabelle asked with a laugh as she took a bite of another sandwich.
"And are you sure there isn't anything I can do? Nothing even around the house other than cleaning and cooking?" Lorabelle asked with a frown as she looked over at Ben, "That seems hardly fair in return for what you are doing for me..." |
"Lora, I've told you before that I like having you here. You provide for excellent company. And you're cooking is starting to improve." Ben encouraged as he moved about the kitchen to help her clean up. "Please don't worry about being a burden because I can assure you that you're not at all."
