Skye perched on the edge of the hard seat of the subway train, her HEADPHONES on, playing a familiar TRACK. Above her, a small neon light flickered on and off. She focused on it for a moment, absorbed in the chemical reaction, before turning her head and gazing out of the window. The sun hung low in the sky, casting it’s final golden light across the city. A small group of birds flew across the soon-to-be sunset. The sky was a wash of reds, yellows and oranges – even the clouds were reduced to a slow pace, the fat, wispy shapes crawling across the colours like slugs. The light reflected off the glass skyscrapers that stood tall, hovering above the city. The train flew across the tracks, which stood a full two-hundred feet above the ground, suspended by steel stilts. Skye twirled a piece of her multi-tonal hair around her finger, her other hand playing with her SKIRT. She had matched it with her RAINBOW TIGHTS and trusty T-SHIRT. Her CONVERSE encased her feet, the laces undone a little, showing their age. On the seat beside her was her LEATHER JACKET, customized with various buttons and badges.
The train slowed, and then stopped, and the automatic doors opened.
"Aqua Junction." said the automated voice from the small speakers that lined the carriages. "Thank you for riding with Thunder Lines. We hope to see you again soon."
Sighing, Skye picked up her jacket and made her way out of the old, yellow train. She scanned the area with her golden eyes, trying to decide where she should go first. She had some researching to do, a project her friend Caitlyn was working on. She was an artist, loved working with natural forms.
"You’re going OUT ?" she had asked earlier that day, excitement dancing behind her hazel eyes. "Ooooh, do me a favour ? Go to the aquarium and fetch me some half-decent pictures ! I’m thinking of making a huge clay jellyfish. ‘Ode to the Great Stinger’. Offt, I like it !"
And thus, being the good room-mate she was, Skye made her way to the biggest aqua-park in the city ;; Sea Wold. Inside her MESSANGER BAG, she had at least fifty dollars to get in – the park was pricey, but she had to admit, they always had some cool marine life to look at. Her frequent trips to the aquarium meant that she had no need for a map, and Skye began walking. It took roughly ten minutes to get to the marine centre from the train, and if you walked super fast, you could make it there in five. Switching the track on her IPOD to a more familiar song, Skye jogged down the street, bathing in the last sunlight of the day. Her pale skin absorbed the warmth, though no colour came to it. She had never been able to get a decent tan, not even a burn. She reckoned it came from her Mother, who spent most of her life inside, avoiding the elements.
A few minutes later, after travelling to the outskirts of the city, where it opened up to the ocean, she finally arrived at Sea World, only to be greeted by a man in a shark costume. She quickly scurried to the front desk, ignoring the whining children and the stressed parents, and got herself a ticket. Pushing herself through the revolving doors, she entered the main room of the park. The ceiling stretched up to the heavens, rainbow fairy lights – which upon closer inspection, you would find to be jellyfish – trapped inside, dancing. Small rock pools dotted about the large room, with groups of people crowding them. Taking only a small moment to gaze in wonder at the beauty of the place, Skye made her way to the small coffee shop towards the side of the room and got herself a coffee and a sandwich, as requested by her grumbling stomach, Taking a bite and a sip, she made her way to a door labelled “Arrival Dock, Staff Only”. Her uncle worked at the park, giving her free reign to explore the building as much as she liked, as well as a pretty cool discount in the gift shop.
Walking through the door, and closing it behind her, she found herself in another large room, filled with old fish tanks and cardboard boxes. One of the four walls of the room was sliced off, completely open, and the smell of the salt air hit Skye’s nose. She breathed in the scent, a feeling of unexplainable joy seeping into her as she looked out over the ocean. The waves lapped up against the dock, rocking the three boats which stood on the water. The entire scene was washed in the golden tones of the sky, even the water was illuminated. Skye’s skin glowed a pale, dewy colour in comparison, reds, golds and oranges appearing in her hear where the light hit it. She took another bite of her sandwich and made her way through the dock to another door labelled “New Arrivals, Staff Only”. Walking through the door, the salty-sea smell faded out – still there, but lingering on the background of her senses. Skye stepped into the shadows, behind a pile of cardboard boxes, and scanned the area, checking for any signs of life. Poking her head around the corner of the structure, she convinced herself that there was nobody there. Walking out, she shook her head.
