Shadow Metro: A Sprinkles RPG [MINI-DEMONS ARE CRUNCHY!]
It was dusk in Dash City. As the sun went down behind tall apartment and office buildings, lights behind the windows and along the busy streets gradually flickered on. Car headlights turned on, too, and together they vied with the alleyway shadows for dominance over the evening. It was like that every night in the city. It was like that in the day as well, though Order had more purchase in the sun. It was Chaos, the disruption of the frantic patterns of the metropolis, that ruled under the moonlight.
By all accounts, Dash had balance. Or at least it had, until three nights ago or so, when a local leader of the city's Arcane world had been found murdered in his riverside mansion. He had been of the Order, and murder (or, at least, the messy sort he'd been a victim of) was of the Chaos. That was the rumor as Anya had heard it, from the owner of her favorite hole-in-the wall bar. Ezra always liked to talk as she sipped her ritual after-work beer, and she suspected he found her as fascinating as she found him. He was a tall black man, with deep brown skin, broad shoulders, and a spark in his eyes that even the Mundane city folk would recognize. Anya still didn't know what he was, really, and she limited her guesses to one or two per week. It had been an ongoing game, and she was running out of ideas. Eventually, she'd earn a free mug of stout, though. This evening she'd left the bar early, driven to distraction by the nagging feeling that the murder was only the beginning of a bigger conflict. Ezra, distracted himself, seemed to understand. They were both of the Order, after all, and if the Chaos escalated… She shuddered, long legs carrying her up the stairs to her small apartment. She should have been gawky, but she seemed to move almost at a glide. Always had, and it was impossible to conceal. Anya was Naga, after all, and even on legs her people retained a serpentine grace. The phone rang just as she had shed her human skin in favor of her long, comfortable tail. She rushed to grab it, hoping for good news, or at least a telemarketer. They were easy enough to hang up on. "Hello," she answered, clearly in spite of her short fangs and forked tongue. "May I ask who's calling?" |
RULES AND GUIDELINES: Welcome to Shadow Metro. This is a private RP for regulars of the Sprinkles, Not Jimmies hangout thread. If you're a regular, and like to write, then welcome aboard. If you're not a regular… well, what are you waiting for? This is an open-ended story. The players will determine where it goes. The setting is a city, and the players will construct it as they go, if that makes any sense. All character classes and races, whether they are from traditional fantasy, urban fantasy, sci-fi, or your own imagination, are welcome. All characters, however, must be able to hide their Arcane nature from the Mundane world. How is up to you. (Characters need not be Arcane, either!) Characters and character sheets: I am not asking for them, and images are optional. I would like to keep track of who is playing whom, though. So when you feel comfortable with where your character is going, PM me a paragraph or two describing them. Appearance, personality, race, ability, strengths, weaknesses… Whatever you feel is important. I'll post them and pictures on the front page as I get them. If you do want to submit a character sheet, that's fine, too. PM it to me or post it in the OOC thread, and I'll get it up there! Avatars representing your characters, either in or out of human disguise, are also acceptable. Also note that any Arcane characters may be either of the Chaos or of the Order. These are not necessarily enemy camps, depending on the plot, but… we'll see how that goes. Other guidelines: 1. Follow Menewsha ToS. (Good advice anytime.) 2. Romance is fine, but keep it PG-13. 3. No godmoding. A good character should have strengths and weaknesses. 4. No killing of characters without the express written consent of those controlling them. If you want out of the game, death doesn't have to be the answer. (Or if it is, death doesn't have to be the end, either. This is fantasy, after all!) 5. Please try to post regularly. We all have lives, and the dungeon master is as guilty as anyone of neglecting her games. Reminders via PM between players are encouraged. 6. The dungeon master is relatively inexperienced. Please limit it to two characters per person, one Chaos, one Order. NPCs don't count. NEW RULE---> 7. The person who first introduces a new Arcane race into the game retains creative control over that race. Please consult the first person if you want to introduce another character of that race. You can find who plays what in the quick key in the post below this one. 8. Have fun! This is a Sprinkles RP. Serious is not part of the expectations. |

ANNOUNCEMENTS 18 September, 2010: Gah, sorry for the delay, Dash Citizens! Between my cold and my online class and getting back into a regular routine after that trip to Jersey... Well, there's really no excuse, but I'm making one anyway. I've been preoccupied and groggy. But! There's an update for you now! :) 4 September, 2010: Everybody into the rhythm of the new semester now? Good. Well, I'm not, but I'm getting there. Anyway, sorry about the delay. I have had a long week, and now that I've had some sleep and found some motivation, I'm good to go again. Do not let this game take away from your work. But I don't want to see it die, either. Most of you have been pinged. Didn't seen the sense in pinging myself, though I could. Hm. Anyway. Shadow Metro is still up and running! 17 August, 2010: There are currently two timelines now. The main group has experienced a time jump to evening of the first day. Which means Kat can bring in JJ! :eager: Ted and Max are still stuck in the morning, but hopefully we can get them caught up. We'll all have to bug Kitteh about that... Anyway, I really did have fun writing the diner scene. And Maxine. Her race and alignment should be pretty obvious, but hey, we have a chaotic vampire, so why not? :) 9 August, 2010: We are almost (I think) to the next scene of this game! Once Gabriel and Zaria's conversation wraps up (and it's a very entertaining conversation), the main group will be pushed ahead the evening of Day 1 and the diner. And we'll be able to bring JJ back into play! :boogie: Ted and Max may remain on a slightly different timeline, but they'll catch up pretty soon, I think. (Max is determined to catch those imps, isn't he?) We'll see... Anyway, you guys are great. XD 30 July, 2010: Kat is, of course, back from her vacation. And I am back from mine, though I'm not quite recovered, yet. It will take a few good nights of real sleep before that'll happen. But the point is, we're out of semi-hiatus, since I think everyone who has been playing is back and active now. 17 July, 2010: This week, Kat (JJ and Gabriel) will be off on a working vacation. By the time she comes back, your loyal DM will be on the road (or rather, rail) to Philadelphia, and will be gone most of the week. What does this mean? About two weeks of semi-hiatus. This would be an ideal time to chill in the OOC thread, discuss future subplots, where the heck to go with the David the gnome murder mystery, how to introduce certain crustaceans into the game (*cough*Facade:*cough*), and which characters will enter into love triangles/quadrangles/etc. |
Heather's heart was pounding in anticipation as she watched the people below her go about their business, both of her parents were away working for the order so she'd been left home alone for the entire weekend; supposedly to defend the house if anyone came but Heather suspected the more probable reason was that they didn't want her bothering them while they were working. It was true that the death of the Arcane leader of Order had frightened Heather, not nearly as much as it had scared her parents, not enough to stop her from going on the evening flights she was so fond of, who would want to prey upon a harmless, pubescent fairy? As the last evening stragglers returned home Heather spread her enormous emperor blue wings, and leapt from the building. Reveling in the few moments of free-fall before her wings caught a thermal updraft, she cried out in glee. Those mundane's don't know what they're missing out on! she thought, releasing another wordless cry of pure joy as she did a loop d' loop. Hoisting her satchel higher up on her arm she flew over and landed on the roof of the church, the tallest and most sheltered area for ages in any direction. Heather opened her bag, pulling out a sandwich and water-proof cushion, scanning her surroundings for the perfect spot to sit and watch the sunset while she did so. She noticed a gargoyle, It was in the perfect line of sunlight. clutching her cushion and sadwich she wandered over and sat next to the statue, tracing the lines of It's face with her fingers. It was very life-like, and very fierce. Turning back towards the sunset Heather sighed, there really was nothing more magnificent than watching the sky go pink, orange, purple and blue with the hues of sunset, not even flying.
The sun was setting in a brilliant display or oranges and pink, making JJ's stone form a silhouette against the sky's brightness. It was only minutes until the gargoyle could shed her stone form and she was excited as always. It didn't take long before the eastern side of the sky was black rather than blue and when the sun was finally below the horizon, JJ opened her eyes. Her eyes always opened first, even before the sun was fully set. The rest of her was still stiff stone, appearing to have been made of granite. she felt a hand touch her just as the last of the sun's rays disappeared beyond the horizon. Her rough gargoyle stone cracked, then softened, turning into course grey flesh. She quickly stood, startled to see a blue-winged girl next to her. JJ growled, showing off a row of fangs. "What are you doing?!!" she snarled.
Heather gave out a small strangled noise and scrambled backwards, this was not an ordinary gargoyle. Heart pounding from the initial shock she stammered out a reply to her (it appeared to be female) question, "P-please don't hurt me, I w-was just coming up h-here to watch the s-sunset, s-sorry if I disturbed you...". The gargoyle was even more terrifying than when it was inanimate stone, it was really making Heather uncomfortable the way its eyes never seemed to blink as they bore into her own. Shakily lifting herself to her feet Heather bowed to the creature, if there was one thing her parents had taught her it was that starting a relationship in an unfriendly manner usually ends up getting you an enemy.
JJ narrowed her black eyes at the girl, unsure of what to make of her. maybe she should just eat the girl and the situation would be solved. She was hungry since she hadn't eaten the previous night, but she discarded the girl. Who knew what trouble she would be into if she killed a child. It likely belonged to someone, someone who would want revenge. And who knew, a silly looking creature with butterfly wings might give her indigestion.
"Ugh, stop your stammering and apologizing or else I really might hurt you!" JJ snarled and turned away from the girl, stretching out her wings. God she was so stiff! |
Biting back tears Heather picked up her satchel and jumped off of the steeple, wings already spread she picked up a thermal updraft almost immediately, not daring to look back she flew away, back towards the distant box that was her parent's apartment. When she finally reached the building she realised she didn't have her key, it must have fallen out of her satchel... In her rush to get out of the gargoyle's way she must have left her key at the church. Swallowing her fear, Heather took a deep breath and headed back towards the distant building, every fibre of her being screaming at her to go back. She could just make out the dark splodge that was the gargoyle out against the evening sky, she was still stretching her wings. Trying to slow her breating, Heather quietly landed on the roof, trying to make as little sound as possible. After quickly scanning the area where she'd been sitting he could just make out the glimmer of metal, her key. Unfortunately it was right next to the gargoyles stone grey foot.
JJ smiled, not quite the friendly sight it should have been with her gargoyle face, as the girl flew away in fear. She thanked the stars that she was alone again, the way she liked it. She stretched her arms over her head and shook out her feet before snapping out her wings with an audible snap. Finally she looked over the edge of the building at the city below. She lifted her head, smelling the air for something to eat. She smelled something, something very close to her. she whirled around suddenly and spotted the girl trying to creep towards her. "YOU!" JJ yelped. "I thought I already scared you off!!"
Heather, now that she was mentally prepared, didn't hesitate to reply, only a slight waver in her voice. "I dropped the key to my apartment on the roof here, It's right by your foot." She inched forwards, "I'd much appreciate it if you'd let me have it back." The edge of fear was still there but now now Heather's voice was somehow commanding, giving her an air of authority. She inched forward again, now the gargoyle (and her key) was only 5 feet away. Biting her bottom lip she stared the gargoyle in the eye, trying not to betray the sea of emotions trying to tell her to run, fight, surrender...
JJ looked down at her feet in surprise. Sure enough, there was a key. she picked it up and twirled it around in her hand for a moment, thinking. At least the girl wasn't acting like a scaredy baby now which was really something considered what JJ looked like. she was like a monster straight out of some kids nightmare. She decided to reward the girl for acting brave and tossed her the key. "Sure, now go run along and play with dolls or something and leave me alone!" In one wing-beat, she was already 6 feet in the air and back to trying t find food.
Nimbly catching the key Heather smiled and sighed in relief, she wasn't dead. Yet. As the Figure of the gargoyle grew distant she shouted at the top of her lungs "My name is Heather and I'm 14, I don't play with dolls!". She was still smiling when she jumped off of the steeple, the sky suddenly seemed lighter and the stars brighter than ever before, she was alive! I guess it only takes a near death situation to really make you appreciate living. she thought, and promptly swooped down upon her apartment block. Once the door was unlocked Heather walked in and grabbed her sandwich, planning to eat it before she went to bed but the days events had thoroughly conked her out so she ended up abandoning the untouched food and falling asleep instead, not even bothering to change out of her day clothes or take of her beloved converse shoes.
JJ laughed as the girl yelled back at her. She wasn't sure why Heather bothered to tell JJ her name. it wasn't like the gargoyle cared, but the girl amused her. Still chuckling lightly, she flew away from the building and swooped over roofs and around alleys, following the scent of the small creatures that lived in the filthier areas of the city. She closed her wings and quickly dropped, using her talon like feet to grab a mangy looking medium sized dog that was scrounging through some trash. She flew up to the top of a relatively tall building after breaking its neck and started to eat.
In her dream Heather was walking though a long room, on either side of here were gigantic, towering statues. They had no eyes or noses but they had huge gaping mouths filled with row upon row of sharp teeth, the statues were coated in a dark reddish crust, dried blood. Even though she knew it wasn't safe the Heather in the dream continued walking, walking for an impossibly long time. When she reached the end of the hall and turned around the statues were gone. She picked up a sword which happened to be lying in front of her and started walking back down the hall. She could hear the scrape of stone upon wood and she started to run, she needed to get out of his room. The end of the hall never got any closer but the noises did, Scraaaape, Scraaaape, Scraaaape...

It wasn't such a horrible neighborhood, Kesha thought to herself as she watched the children play under the streetlights. She was just a retail clerk, forced to move to a rent-controlled apartment after a particularly messy divorce. Custody of her daughter had been awarded to her, but not much else. Her ex had been abusive, but his manipulation abilities had helped him in court.
This was fine, though. The park was well-illuminated, though spotted with struggling maple trees and see-saws, and the children loved to play here. Right now, an hour or so before their bedtimes, a group of them -- fourth and fifth graders, mostly -- organized an evening game of kickball. Or maybe dodgeball. If it was the latter, the parents who looked on would break it up. It seemed to be kickball tonight, though. The children, or at least the fifth graders, already looked forward to junior high, and the magical illusion of adulthood. They were determined to act like adults, or try. Not that it worked, but it did mean that the ready first aid kits didn't see as much use as they had in earlier years. Tonight felt wrong to Kesha, though, in spite of Notre Dame's little brother in the distance, which normally made her feel safe. There was nothing wrong on the surface, but if something or someone was nearby shouldn't have been… Well, she was just an ordinary woman, but she trusted her mother's instinct. "Betsy," she called. "Time to come in!" "But Mooo-oom!" the girl in scruffy jeans and a thrift-store t-shirt replied, "We just started!" "Don't you have a test tomorrow?" "No!" "Homework, then. Come in and study. It's late." Betsy turned to look at her mother, ready to protest even louder, when something caught her eye. A shadow at the top of her apartment building. Just a smudge, really, from the distance, but her eyes were keen enough. "Mom, what's that?" she pointed directly at the shadow. Kesha squinted, and stared, trying to make out what her daughter was looking at. "I don't know, Betsy, I really don't." |
Taityn Emryson, dreamwalker, was out for his nightly stroll, though his type of nightly stroll was much different than the average mundanes, heck even the average Arcane's nightly strool. No Tait did not go for a walk down a boring street, instead he roamed through peoples dreams, enjoying seeing what crazy thing people could dream up. Though as a general rule Tait did avoid entering nightmares, he always found it particulary hard to avoid interefering in those. Especially when they were the nightmares of a child, but Tait had taken an oath when he turned to the Order, he had promised that he would not interefere willy nilly in the dreams of others, unlike dreamwalkers of the Chaos. So when he found himself in the middle of a nightmare, drawn there by some inexplicable reason, Tait was shocked. He looked around, knowing from the feel of the dream it was a nightmare, but not certain what it was about. Tait wandered through the empy hall looking for the creator of the dream, now that he was here determined to investigate. What he found was a young teenager, surround by threatening statues that were covered in blood, he almost stepped forward to rescue the girl when he noticed she held a sword. He grinned, it seemed this girl was no weakling, he stopped to watch, curious to see how this dream would unfold.
JJ sensed eyes on her and looked down at the park that was below the building. it was too well lit for her likes and now that she was well fed, she realized what a horrid place to perch this building was. She stilled instinctively, crouching down like a normal gargoyle and hoped that they didn't bother to investigate. she could kill them, but she could see others at the park and watching the children. she wasn't about to put herself in a situation that involved angry townfolk chasing her with pitchforks.
Heather, not noticing Tait, gave out a menacing hiss and said in a voice unlike her own "Leave, you soulless wraiths, for I wield the sword of Order and you are Chaos. Leave before you are slain." Not knowing where the words had come from, they had just left her mouth of their own accord Heather stumbled back. The statues stopped advancing and started to crumble, they gave out metallic screeches as they disintegrated, setting Heather's teeth on edge. Looking around for the exit she noticed someone in the shadows. She paused and tightened the grip on her sword.
Tait eyes widened, he was impressed. This girl definitely did not look like she would be able to present such a front when faced with such terrifying beasts. He stepped out of the shadows, applauding her. "I'm surprised, most young girls I encounteer in nightmares don't stand and fight. You are definitely an exception to the rule."
Heather gasped and almost dropped her sword when the man walked out of the shadows, Heather wasn't normally the type to get swoony but boy, he was handsome. She dug her finger nails into her palms and replied; "Um... I guess... Um... Who are you...?" Smooth move, Heather mentally kicked herself. This guy looked like he was in his early twenty, maybe even in his teens but he was way too old. Snap out of it, you lovesick baby! Heather said to herself, He's probably only part of your imagination!
Tait chuckled slightly at her and held out his hand cordially, "I'm Taityn, but you can call me Tait," he paused studying her but figured she would probably think this all just a dream when it was said and done and said, "I'm not a part of your imagination if you are wondering, I'm what is called a dream walker, we are capable of wandering through dreams at will."
Heather watched his lips move, the movements they made were so fluid, beautiful, perfect... When he stuck out his hand Heather was startled back to reality, she tentatively grabbed it, his skin with so smooth... "I'm Heather, I'm a fairy. N-nice to meet you, Tait." She said, what a strange name, 'Tait'... It made her think of potatoes...
Tait's eyes widened, so she was of the Arcane, that meant she would remember him in the morning. He looked at her suddenly feeling awkward, it wasn't really proper to be in a young girls dream, "I'm sorry for intruding on your dream. He looked at her and looked away from her, "I should probably go, I typically avoid nightmares, and I'm still not entirely certain of how I ended up here."
