Dragon Quest IX

This is about Dragon Quest IX Sentinels of the Starry Sky!!

I give this game out of a rank from one to ten, a nine!! It is a really fun game despite that it is for the Nintendo DS. I think the game could have been so much better had they just put it on the Nintendo Wii. The character creation is pretty cool whereas you can make your character four different heights. Eye color, hairystyle(which is limited to eight styles per gender which could have been a few more.) I like being able to see what it is you are wearing. It kind of has the spirit of Dragon Quest VIII but with a kick, as the hero and Jessica were able to have different outfits where Yangus and Angelo were not. I like the fact there are lots of side quests and the fact you can creat numerous characters on the side in the wing for you to change up the game play some. It's an interesting concept starting out as a guardian angel for a village, but not sure how I feel about the story line so far, it is interesting, but I need to play the game a little further before I just totally state my opinion on that. The music is awesome as usual. The whole wi fi connection thing I don't have but I'm sure that could be some fun as well.

You should definitely play this game if you are a traditional role playing gamer. As it has all the elements and more. An awesome game overall.

Dragon Quest X is already in development for the Wii.

IX is my first Dagon Quest but I'm really enjoying it so far, I like games with a lot of character customisation so being able to use your own party without any pre-sets is a big plus. The music in the Quester's Rest is insanely cheerful and very catchy, I always drop in just to hear it.

Dragon Quest Nine is your first game out of the entire series?! You should definitely give Dragon Quest Four and Five a chance. Both of those aren't quite as advanced as part nine, but they are just as fun in the traditional sense and the stories in both of them are just astounding. In Dragon Quest four they adjust the story slightly depending on what gender you chose to be. It's a very good game. Customization is the key to a successful game. I just wished they had more hair styles. I would have liked to have seen longer hair for both the girl and boy characters. Where exactly is Quester's Rest? How far have you already gotten in the game? I am in Bloomingdale but have not progressed much further due to side quests which have been keeping me really busy. There is one quest where you can find secret dungeons and let me tell you buddy, they are difficult, so if you go to even the first dungeon of woe level one, you will be in for a fight of your life because the boss is flipping hard!! Make sure you level up well before fighting him or you could end up like me. My main Celestian character was at level twenty-seven and my three companions were at level twenty-three. We got our asses handed to us by the big thunderous horse monster. I really love this game so much!!

I can't wait for Dragon Quest X, I have really high expectations for it. I really liked Dragon Quest VIII--- I hope it's like that but only with many more characters to play as.

I'm at the boss in the shrine to the west of Coffinwell, only a few hours in I guess. My characters' levels are 14/15. The Quester's Rest is the inn in Stornwall that Erinn runs, where you create your additional characters. I also lament the lack of hairstyles, there isn't a decent medium-long hairstyle for boys and only one for girls.

I haven't tried any other DQ games because I don't really like the traditional/delibrately retro JRPG, I was playing the FF3 remake before this and I absolutely hated it. DQ IX seemed to have enough differences to make it worth a try and I'm really glad I did.

The shrine west of Coffinwell is a great place to level up characters as there are metal slimes that can grant you anywhere from seven hundred fifty to over twelve hundred experience. They are slippery little suckers as are all metal slims in this series, but they are worth going after. Best way is to have someone using sword or multiple characters and do a metal slash. I'm further on into the game. I have created eight different character which is the max for the game, and yes, the limited number of hair styles are disappointing. You might like Dragon Quest VIII as it is a beautifully crafted game, but of course, you don't get to change outfits except for the woman has a few different outfits and the main hero has one other outfit and there are only four playable characters. The game is long but has a very intriguing story. I really enjoyed it.

I played Final Fantasy Three remake and I have to admit, I was not really impressed. I found myself getting extremely frustrated with the game and the fact that when a temporary character joins your party that you can't actually use them, they just help randomly. I like traditional role playing games as long as the music, art, and story are done well. I haven't played Dragon Quest Two, Three, or Seven, I know two and three are traditional as they have not been remade, but seven was for the play station one which is extremely hard to find.

Played it am stuck at final boss D:. Need to level to 50+ to stand a chance. I love the series I have only played one other it was for the GBC. I liked that one a lot. I like how they kept lots of the music the same it made me happy that it wasnt trying to be all new. Im glad they kept lots of the older stuff in it.

Darke 08-05-2010 09:22 AM

I'm near the end too; the third lieutenant of the Empire. My characters are level ~33 and it doesn't really seem possible to beat him at the moment, he can kill one of my party per turn if he attacks the same person twice. I'm thinking of switching my priest to a paladin for the extra survival, the healing spell from the wand skill seems sufficient enough.

I just now rescued the Queen from her over loving pet golden lizard. I have been preoccupied doing quests and leveling up all eight characters. My Celestrian is at level thirty-eight warrior- twenty six minstrel, and llevel fourteen martial artist. You can spend a lot of time in an area trying to do side quests and find extra items that theives can steal I have it in my party to where everyone can do the half-inch skill which allows you tp pilfer an item but the chance of getting it is low so it is necessary to get everyone to be able to do it. Oh yea my main character is also level twelve thief as well. I can't believe how fast a lot of people rush to the end so quickly. I am also trying to beat the first dungeon of Woe level one and let me tell you something; that horse creature at the end of it is so friggin hard that if everyone is not at least level thirty-five plus, you have no hope of defeating him. I keep getting my ass kicked everytime I do it. Luckily I have been smart enough to deposit all of my gold in the bank. It's not like I have been spending it really. All the way up to this point I have barely bought anything and just relied on finding items in the dungeons, towns, and monster drops as well as going out and stealing from the monsters too.

@Darke ~ How did you get that far into the game without leveling up higher? Now I must say that is a real challenge!! I really want to defeat the first secret dungeon that you can find next to Stornwell before I progress any further.

rikuee 08-09-2010 03:18 AM

All the quests and more at end game. So I do lots of the quests for level 40 vocation quests level 100 in a skill tree quests. thats what I spent the last few days doing. Hope I have a better chance at the final boss. All my characters are about 43 averaged

I don't really know, I guess I found the regular monsters to be easy and never stopped to grind anywhere. I took a break to complete the level 100 quests for wands and shields, I also cleared out the grotto next to Stornway, Equinox is pretty easy once everyone is up to level 30. I'm up to the very final boss now but I'm probably going to get destroyed without adding a few more levels.

Turning my priest into a paladin really payed off, they have a very good passive skill tree. Kabuff and Magic Resistance make fighting bosses that don't use disruptive wave quite easy, and forbearance is incredibly strong when paired with magic shield.

I have so much to look forward too once I get to the end of the game, I finally just defeated Equinox-- the evil horse monster in the level one dungeon of Woe. It was pretty easy except those giant evil toads in there are pretty dangerous if you don't keep your hit points up. They can really fuck up your heroes. So far I have managed to find five celestial shiny fruits fyggs. I really like my game and love how you can change outfits almost constantly. I hope Dragon Quest X makes this possible and instead of chibi art, they use life size like they did in Dragon Quest VIII and they have a variety of heroes, not just four. I really think they should have like four slots for main character heroes and allow a fifth slot for NPC or temporary characters that could possibly help the party out, and they should be able to be leveled up.

@Darke ~ I like to grind, that has always been I guess why it takes me so long to finish a good role playing game. In my opinion a good role playing game without side quests in it should last at least sixty hours or better. I like Part nine a lot, I just wished you could play it on a bigger screen other than the bigger screened DSI. I can't wait for part Ten to come out. I love this series so much. This game will have high play value especially since I know how to level up relatively fast... knowing where all the metal slimes can be found lol!!

I just bought this game! I'm pretty excited to get playing it! Wish me luck! :yumeh1: This will be my first Dragon Quest game.

You are in for a treat. As for the DS the graphics are pretty good. I was quite disappointed at first when I found out it was going to be put out on the Nintendo DS, when a game of this kind of calliber should obviously be put on a main console. The graphics don't really compare to the predescessor Dragon Quest VIII, but the fun factor and all the new features and character creation definitely forgives that sin, I do wish there were more hair dos If you need any help feel free to ask, I am taking my time playing this game so make sure you don't rush through it, as you get more enjoyment by taking your time, playing through everything and enjoying the secondary parts of the game such as the side quests. I haven't played it online yet but I would like to try as soon as the opportunity presents itself. It's a great game, and I hope you really enjoy it!!

Soda 08-11-2010 08:55 PM

Yeah I frankly hate most DS games as far as their graphics go, it just looks bad. Especially when they try for 3D... But I've learned to suck it up and ignore it cause DS's are fun haha!

I tend to do every side quest I can possibly do in RPGs, so it's safe to say I won't be blazing through the game quickly.

I spend wayyyyyy tooo much time leveling and grinding different characters. I love my Dragon Quest games. I also have Dragon Quest IV and V which are good games too as they are two D games. I cannot wait for Dragon Quest VI Realms of Reverie to finally come out and it will be out on the Nintendo DS as well. The only games they have not remade yet are Dragon Quest One, Two, and Three. Since the first part of the series is a one player game, I would almost fancy it being an action Role playing game, but I doubt that would happen because purist would probably riot and have a huge outcry over to them would be an outrage and downright blasphemous in their eyes. I do think it's interesting how Ivor is like the only NPC that joins you and if you notice you cannot level him up at all which kind of sucks in a way, but all the non playable characters that joing your party in the other Dragon Quest Games such as part IV and V, you cannot level them up either. Oh well, just a small issue I guess, like I said I hope part ten is the best of them all. Japan is just totally spoiled rotten when it comes to this series and they only allow it to be brought out on the weekened because you have people who will lay out of school and work to play this really really fun video game lol!!!

Darke 08-13-2010 02:12 PM

I finally beat the main story last night, with about ~62 hours of playtime. Turns out having a character with multiheal is fairly essential to beating him unless you over-level a lot. The plot seems to draw quite heavy inspiration from Christian mythology, and I'm not really sure how [bad guy] was able to get so powerful just because he was imprisoned for so long.

Anyway, on to the super hard post-game content! I have two characters leveled in axes and one in spears so I can use the 'crit or miss' moves to take out liquid metal slimes for super fast leveling. There's still two classes I haven't unlocked, and I need to try and install my USB wifi connector so I can go online with the DQVC.

i love dragon quest IX ^_^

I was finally able to get online for the DQVC store and it was actually not anything too special other than you would be able to get access to some items that otherwise you would not have access to in a regular item shop. Well I still have a long ways to go. Im not sure where to go after helping the Queen and saving her from her pet lizard. I really enjoy the game. So far I have unlocked armentalist, gladiator and ranger. I think there is atleast one more class, I haven't looked at a strategy guide yet.

@dragonjake ~ yes, this game is a great success, but I have a feeling when Dragon Quest X comes out it will be a serious epic success. I can hardly wait lol and they need to hurry up and get Draong Quest VI outr. They have waited long enough for that.

Darke 08-13-2010 10:50 PM

You actually have three more classes to unlock! Although you have to beat the game for the last one. The items in the DQVC increase in power/rarity with your level and progress through the game, so you should get some better stuff near the end and in the post-game. After the desert palace you should check out the continent to the north-east for how to progress next.

I'm really looking forward to X, although in some ways I think I will be disappointed since it probably won't have the same level of character customisation that IX has.

Wow three more classes to unlock?! I'm really frigging excited now!! I got my Celestrian to level forty as a warrior, now I'm trying to level him up to level forty as a minstrel. I wished the minstrel class had musical instruments to play to do certain things. Well I will definitely keep checking the DQVC and checking to see if she has any rare items. I think, the creators of Dragon Quest will continue to add features without losing it's traditional elements. I think a lot of Japanese players like that aspect of the game. Me however, I kind of like the main character to have a voice and then be able to have secondary characterization juxtaposed with main characters. I will go north-east because I have went to other continents and my party has had a really tough time even at the high levels everyone was at.

I hope Dragon Quest Ten has everything this game has and more, you should give Dragon Quest VIII a chance as the story is so well written and it sucks you in. I kind of wished they would have just given the main character a voice. This is one of the games in the series the main character should have been a character all on his own. I'm sure ten will not disappoint us.... I hope or the creators have had it!!! LOL! HHEHEHHHEHHHHEHEH

Kole_Locke 08-18-2010 03:57 PM

This sucks, but I lost my Dragon Quest IX game, so I won't be playing it for a long time, cause I can't afford to buy another copy :( I'm so fucking pissed off about it too!! I put my Nintendo DS down a minute in my car and the game is bloody gone!! God this really fucking sucks!!

Darke 08-18-2010 04:32 PM

Surely it must be in your car somewhere? The carts are quite small so it could have gotten itself lodged between seats, under seats etc. I'm not sure how it managed to eject itself from your DS either. I've been storing my stuff in the old GBA carry case, turns out the DS fits in there just fine and the carts do too.

I've cleared about 11 grottoes now, I'm finally starting to get down to the higher ranked ones (I had gem jamborees in my last grotto). Hopefully I'll get one with Metal King Slimes soon and then I can finally level up more efficiently. I also discovered some useful alchemy recipes: you can cleanse cursed items by mixing them in the alchemy pot with some saint's ashes (either one or three), and rusty items can be restored to powerful equipment by mixing them with nine glass frit and one orichalcum.

I hope you can find your missing cart, you still had so much left to do.

I have combed that car searching for it and my room is in such a disarray that it would take a while to find it so I've just decided to quit looking for it and hopefully it will turn up, otherwise I think I will buy another one around Christmas time. I hope it doesn't come to that-- I'm so pissed talking about it I can already feel my blood boiling over. Hearing you speak of all the fun stuff I'm missing out on makes me feel so horrible... I feel bad. Well on to other shit :( Hopefully it will turn up soon...

In the mean time I have ressurected one of my old games called Disgaea. It is a pretty cool game btw lol. It is the second part and just so you know there is also a Dragon Quest cartoon you can look up on youtube which is kind of cool actually. You should check it out. I WANT MY DRAGON QUEST NINE!!! HHHHAAAHHAHHAHAH!!!

Darke 08-19-2010 12:56 AM

I'm familiar with the Disgaea series, though I've never played one myself. I do enjoy strategy RPGs but the primary thing I hear about Disgaea is how grindy it is; how much constant leveling of the characters and item worlds and such. That's always put me off trying it because I don't enjoy leveling for the sake of leveling. Dragon Quest IX is the most 'grindy' game I own and it's just about my limit for how much I'm prepared to do.

I've had GBA carts I've misplaced turn up even a couple of years later, I hope yours doesn't take so long to find it's way back to you.

Yea Disgaea is a grindy game and if that isn't your style, then I would suggest you turn from that one particularly. I love grindy games to a certain extent, you don't have to grind way tooo much to finish the game really but there is so much other stuff you can do on it that does require quite a bit of grinding. I like all the secrets I guess. lol I'm just a leveling up kind of freak LOL!!!! I really hope it does turn up soon, I have been feeling like shit for the past day so it's not too helpful for my self-esteem.
