scholar's crappy sketches
So... yeah. I've always wanted to be able to draw, and I think I can, sort of, but nothing compared with what the average artist here is capable of. I sketched my mule, using a plain mechanical pencil on the back of some scratch paper, scanned it into Photoshop, and adjusted the brightness.

The best thing you can do when trying to develope artistic skills is taking a sketchpad and a pencil out into the real world and drawing from real life. Through that you learn anatomy and body movement as well as expression. If there's a particular part of the body you really want to improve then I suggest you focus on sketching that. Style will come as you progress but that's honestly the best advise I can give.

Thanks for the advice. I sometimes sit in classes and sketch the head of someone in front of me, but I've never worked on legs. :)

Feet are a bitch!!!
This is actually very good! The feet suit the drawing as a whole, so that's always good. Often times I'll draw something and then ONE thing will be completely out of proportion and it just messes up the whole drawing... Hmmm... advice... well, I don't really know. For the most part, I learned on my own by sheer observation and practice. But there are some really amazing tutorials on sites like deviantART, ranging from all sorts. I noticed you only drew an outline--have you tried CG? |
Thanks! I'll see what I can find out there.
I drew an outline because that's about my skill level. As for CG... I don't have a tablet, and a mouse can barely write. I'm thinking of getting a tablet for my husband and then stealing it, actually. XD |
A tablet can be a true lifesaver. May take a little while to get used to, but once you do... you will love it. Some of my crappiest drawings can transform into something nice by use of a tablet. Of course, the programs you use will impact it also... but, all in good time.

I've worked a fair deal in Photoshop, making LJ icons and other small graphics, so I believe you -- my sketches, were I to do them over in PS, might actually come out looking halfway decent.
But, as Lucky Starz pointed out, I do need a better study of anatomy and proportion. It's like practicing your scales and etudes before embarking on an actual piece. |
For practice on anatomy and proportioning, my suggestion would be that you take a camera and snap a few shots of yourself in whatever pose you want to draw. Then, use that as a reference as you try to draw it out. If you don't want to go through all that, you could always use others peoples' stock photos as reference--just to get a similar idea of how everything is meant to be placed. Eventually, if you do this enough, your mind will adapt to knowing where everything is supposed to be positioned and you'll be capable of producing it from memory.

Great suggestion -- I'll try that this afternoon!
|
Let me know how it goes!
Speaking of drawing, I have the lines done for the hangout thread banner. I just need to color it in, which I should get done today. If you will still be on later and have the chance to write up the introduction, we can probably get the thread up by tonight! |
I'll be on most of the afternoon!
|
|
Oh, wow! It's simply gorgeous!
Shall I start the thread? |
Did you have a layout in mind? I was going to create little sub-banners too, but if you want to keep it simple then you're free to go ahead.
|
Probably. I'll start the thread, and then we can alternate posts to reserve.
