What nationality/ethnicity do you identify with?

When people ask you where you are from, what do you say? I say that I am Dutch, even though I am Canadian. So I am a Dutch Canadian.

Just wondering what everyone else's nationality and ethnicity is.

Honestly, I know very little about what I primarily am. I know my dad descended from germany and my mom is a bit irish.
but most of my family has lived here for a really, really long time. :X

jellysundae 08-27-2010 02:47 AM

I'm British, though I'll probably say English more often than not as Britain covers 4 different countries. But I'm basically a European mongrel as my Dad is half French, a quarter Italian and a quarter Swiss, and my Mum is half English and half Irish. I don't generally confuse people with my complicated heritage though

Maybe it's a good thing that my Dad was adopted and got a new surname, otherwise I'd have a double-barreled French surname which would be hard to fit onto forms and so on and people would be always pronouncing wrong xD

Hey its Marise 08-27-2010 03:44 AM

I'm an American Mutt.

I'm Syrian, Greek, Italian, Brittish, French and Scandanavian.

ChaosCass13 08-27-2010 03:46 AM

I am canadian, But my heritage includes Dutch, english, scottish, welsh, and very largely Norwegian.

Akstar 08-27-2010 03:52 AM

I would normally say American..though if asked more of what combination of American, I'm considered more German American due to my father's side/last name even though I live with my mother (now has a different last name than me)...On my mother's side we think it's a combination of English and Irish somehow...Oo;

monstahh` 08-27-2010 07:11 AM

I'm white.

That's really it. That's how I'd describe myself.

jocelynese 08-27-2010 07:34 AM

I'm American Chinese (: And I love dim sum and pizza.

Shiki Nekozawa 08-27-2010 08:19 AM

Nationality wise I'm American, but also Hawaiian as i live in Hawaii. My ethnicities would be Chinese, German, Native American, African American, Hawaiian those i know for sure but i've also been told Japanese, Korean & Irish.
I identify with my asian or Native American side more than any of my other ethnicities.

sailor star rainbow 08-27-2010 08:32 AM

I'm American 3 half's Dutch 1 half Irish and we pinch of French in me. my mom's mom is Dutch so is my mom's dad,my dad's dad is full dutch. my dad mom was full Irish and some were on my mom's side of the fmaily has french in them. it's kind of funny at times since I can only speak a few words in Dutch and French.

Codette 08-27-2010 12:20 PM

I'm Canadian, but I'm a European Mutt. I'm Scottish, Irish, Welsh, English, French.... now we're not exactly sure, where my family's from (either Norway, or Sweden, or Finland) so we just say we're Vikings....

So pretty much we're our own worst enemies. (Scots vs. Irish, Scots vs. English, Irish vs. English, French vs. Everyone, Viking doing whatever they please... and Welsh kinda just hanging back until an opportunity arises) *giggles*

coccyx 08-27-2010 12:25 PM

American. I'm 4th generation in America, so I know nothing if Mother Russia. I remember when I was a kid, there would always be cultural activities, and I never really got it. They'd ask for food other than American fare and the best I could do were latkes. And I don't even identify as Jewish anymore.

ToriKat 08-27-2010 02:22 PM

I'm an American. Since I'm Chinese-Korean, people are always asking me where I "came from." Saying Texas or the United States of America is never enough...because I suppose they think that belonging to an ethnic minority equates to being a recent immigrant. :/ And yes...they will push until I say what my ethnic background is. T__T

*will amuse myself - next time someone asks where I came from I'll say I'm from Pizza Hut* ;D

Kole_Locke 08-27-2010 02:24 PM

I am Englsh/Italian. I like my heritage, especially the Italian food lol

Night Watcher 08-27-2010 03:12 PM

I am unsure of my ethnicity.
However My nationality is English, as I was born and live in England. It is said that my grandfathers mother, during the 2nd world war, had relations with one of the foreign army men. As many allies of britain helped in the 2nd world war, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippine Commonwealth, Poland, Albania, the Union of South Africa, and Yugoslavia, China. I could be any of these ethnicities, but as my grandfather does not know who is father is, and his mother has died, it's difficult to pinpoint any known origin, all is known is that it was a foreign operative.
I have been told many times that because of my skin colour and how my face is set, my eyes and mouth, I look very much Mediterranean, I've also been told I look similar to Chinese. So I know it's very possible I have some sort of Hispanic blood in me :]
It's hard to know my ethnicity. But at the moment as I am not entirely sure, I label myself as White British.

lastemoon 08-27-2010 03:34 PM

I am a Filipina :) My mother is from the Philippines and I was born there.... My dad was an American soldier stationed there. On his side I know for sure I have Scandinavian roots.... but not sure what else.

Slide 08-27-2010 10:05 PM

I happen to be, Canadian thought my background is Jamaican ;D Yupp! Islander :3

Dottie Mae Evans 08-28-2010 02:31 AM

Hm... I am American, but racial/ethnic wise I consider myself Black. Even though I am white (consists of European backgrounds of German, Scots-Irish, English, and French), Black, and Hispanic (Colombian). I hadn't gotten the chance to know the Hispanic side of my family. So I only know the European side and the Black side.

As to what nationality I most identify with, I would go with American. As to race, I would go with Black.

For those that might say, "Shouldn't it be African-American". Well, that term is kind of out of date. The last time I checked or heard, there was a small movement on Facebook to change the term to "black". :S That is all I know. So don't correct me, please.

HappyStarr 08-28-2010 02:52 AM

I just say I'm me. I am my own race, and not even my family would argue with that.

Technically speaking, my nationality is American and my Ethnicity is primarily German, with bits of Scottish, Welsh, French, and British stuck in there. So I guess I'd identify myself mostly with German and Scottish.

But if people ask where I'm from, I usually just answer "the world." I have no intentions of staying planted in one place for super long periods of time (8+ years). I get bored, it drives me crazy and makes me feel trapped, and I'd rather explore the world. And not just go see the sights, but live in and experience cultures I'm not familiar with. :D

Some Random Randomness 08-28-2010 04:02 AM

I just say American. I don't go into my ancestry, because that's too much of a muddied puddle to actually be certain. My family likes to believe we have strong roots in Irish soil.

I guess culture wise I could claim Dutch, and I do hope to obtain Dutch nationality when I'm given the chance to have dual passports.

cashuea 08-28-2010 04:41 AM

I am mostly a Cherokee Native American ;) the rest of me is pure mutt!

Sakiko123 08-28-2010 08:33 AM

I usually just say everything I know. Half German, quarter Scottish, quarter British and quarter who knows what? Possibly a bit of Ukrainian in that missing quarter. Not sure. I was born in Canada, though.

aphrodite remix 08-28-2010 02:10 PM

I'm Canadian. My heritage is French/German but I wouldn't identify that way. I've been born and raised in Canada - although many of our traditions and family recipes are mostly German etc... I'm still Canadian.

Wynna 08-28-2010 03:08 PM

Wow, I didn't realize there was so many Canadians on Menewsha, thought the majority would be American.

Readera 08-28-2010 03:41 PM

To me where I am from is more where I grew up then what nationality or ethnicity are you. So I'll answer both questions!
Nationality-wise I am American, ethnicity-wise I'm a bit of a mutt. My mom is German, and french mostly and my dad is polish and a bit of Russian. She grew up in Georgia. He is also new York Jewish, however he's about as Jewish as an Olive Garden is Italian, which is to say not very.

I am an army brat and I grew up all over the Southern US. Born in Germany, lived in Kentucky till 5th grade, moved to Texas live there till 11th grade and now I'm in Alabama.
