-Alright who shall start? Is your character going to be in the shop? or a buyer?-
|
-I'll start, as a buyer-
Tori-Anne walked down the alley, wondering where that noise she had heard had come from, it sounded like an animal of some sort. She saw nothing at first glance, but when she blinked she saw a shop with a dusty sign in the window that read "Magical creatures for sale." Magic had always fascinated her so she decided to go in. The inside of the shop was as dust as the sign that lead her to it, and the scent of caged animals hung in the air. A man stood behind a wooden counter, and as she looked him up and down, trying to asses him, he spoke... |
Inside the shop was dark with two dimly lit lamps. Klaus stood slumped over, resting his elbows on the wooden desk. The shop was almost empty minus the small cabinets of creature figurines and colorful pictures hanging on the gray walls. Each was framed with some type of creature. The doorway behind Klaus was hidden by thick velvet red drapes. A white cat sat in on the desk, watching their new client like she was prey.
Klaus smiled at the girl. "Welcome to Klaus's Creatures. What can I help you with?" The room was bitterly cold. A small golden figurine of a griffin sat near a old fashioned phone on the wooden desk. Klaus sat up, dusting off his fur on his coat. |
"You sell magical creatures?" Tori asked nervously, the man had spoken kindly, but he was still an imposing figure and she could imagine it was pretty scary when he lost his temper. She shivered in the cold room, wondering why it wasn't heated.
"I'm interested in getting a fire lizard, do you sell them?" The white cat raised one paw and batted the air for no particular reason, and Tori noticed that it had one blue eye and one green one. This just added to the creepy air of the shop and she shivered again, but it wasn't from the cold this time. |
"Oh course." He lazily pointed to the rows of figurines. "Take your pick." It was test he used on all his clients. IF they proved trustworthy he would bring them back into the hallway and show them what they desired. He had delt with so many people after his creatures for fame and that was never going to happen again. No, these creatures were meant to kept hidden for personal use only. He watched her closely, his eyes shine din the darkness. He waited for her next move.
|
Figurines? This makes no sense. Tori thought to herself.
"Don't try to cheat me. I know that those are just figurines." She scowled at the big man. She was meek usually, but when people tried to cheat her, or she had to stick up for herself she could be mean, and she used that meanness to get what she wanted. |
He chuckled and stood up. "Alright. I shall show you. But good and bad can come from buying one of my creatures. Do be warned they can be a bit uncontrollable." He said. Klaus turned, looking at the desk. He slammed his fist into the middle and something behind the curtains snapped. He pulled the curtains back, showing her the large metal door. He pulled off his necklace, shoving the red stone into a small slot. The door clicked open. He pulled on his necklace and pushed open the door, letting a blast of cold air into the room. "If you will...Follow me."
|
Cautiously, Tori tip-toed after the large man. The opening of the huge metal door had let frigid air into an already freezing room, and her skimpy mock-gothica outfit just wasn't going to keep her warm. She understood why the man wore such heavy furs. She sighed, this was ridiculous.
"What's your name?" She asked. "I can't call you The Large Man forever, now can-" She stopped short, the room they had just entered into was immense. Cages were everywhere, with creatures and beasts and some beings that were too beautiful to comprehend. The noise was raucous and the smell was repulsive, she wondered if he could smell it any more. |
"Klaus. Now what was it you wanted?" He asked, glancing behind him. The woman he had hired to clean had been killed just days ago by one of the more angry creatures. He promised himself not to hire anyone anymore. He just had not had time to clean up yet. Luckily he had removed the body and cleaned the blood, leaving no trace of the killing. "I carry all things. Each of them is rare and from different parts of the world. I caught them myself. Sorry for the mess. My help had to quit." He said.
|
"A Fire Lizard." Quit? I doubt it, some of these creatures look dangerous. She thought to herself. She looked over into one of the corners and gasped, standing there, in a cage, just big enough for it to lift it's head was a unicorn. She had never seen something seem so out of place, it was such a ray of light in the dark, cold storeroom. She knew she couldn't save it though... not yet anyway.
|
"Fire lizard...Ah yes! I have just required one of those. A great specimen at that." He tapped his fingers against his lips, trying to figure out where he had stored the creature. A large pure white wolf, glared up at Klaus, barring it's large fangs at him. The wolf wasn't a wolf but a rare white werewolf, drugged and captured.
Klaus glared down at the beast and slapped his knee. "I remember now! Back in the storage room. It's heated so it doesn't get ill from the cold." He said, yanking off his necklace and walking to the far back of the rows of cages. He unlocked the door with the stone and put his necklace back on. |
A heated room! Finally! Tori thought. She looked at the wolf that had been glaring at Klaus.
"A wolf? That doesn't seem so magical." Then it occured to her that probably it wasn't just a wolf. "Wait..." She said, suddenly nervous again. "That's a werewolf isn't it? Aren't they human most of the time? Do you let him out when he is in his human form?" She desperately hoped that he did, because the thought that he didn't scared her, some of her friends were magical creatures by night and wasn't this just a form of slavery? They walked into the store room in the back, and a wave of warmth hit her. This was more like it. She saw the fire lizard at once and was so happy that she was taking it home. The cage was big enough for it to move around, but not big enough that it could spread its wings. She felt instantly sorry for it. It's ok little guy, you'll be safe soon. She thought at the creature, hoping that it could sense her sympathy. |
"No, He's very rare and hasn't been in the best of health it's better and safer for him to stay in that form for this time until he is sold." He walked up behind her and grinned. "Great color, isn't it? So will you adopt it? It's..." He tapped his lip and nodded. "For you, how about only one hundred or we could do a loan or..." He grinned. She was cute enough and seemed to know a lot about the creatures...
"You could work here and have him today for no cost." He said, crossing his arms over his broad chest. Yes, he could seeing her doing his shop a lot of help. |
Work here? She thought. It would be hard with all the trapped creatures playing on my conscience, but maybe I could do them some good if I worked with them.
"Alright, I'll take your deal." She nodded for emphasis and held out her hand for the big man to shake. "And you are right, He is a brilliant colour, absolutely gorgeous." The fire lizard chirped as if he knew what she was saying, and a forceful spirit whispered in her ear. "Maybe he does." Sina? "Who else, this is a cool place to work sis, you'll enjoy it... just don't cause chaos." I'll try my best Sina. Tori felt her sister's spirit fade again and hoped that Sina wasn't hinting that she would cause chaos. She couldn't afford to lose another job. |
Klaus nodded and shook her hand. "You can start firs thing tomorrow. You may take it's cage and here is a simple guide about how to take care of this beast. You may start at eleven in the morning. We open then." He said and showed her out of the room. "You will fed and give the creatures and ted to their needs, cleaning cages, talking to smooth them and such. You won't deal with buyers, that is my job and mine alone and uh..." He stopped outside of the werewolf's cage. " Don't bother this one."
The wolf watched with wary eyes, wanting to attack the man as he passed. But the drugs in his system were causing him to be rather tired and weak. He wasn't upset about being drugged or even for forced to remain in his wolf form. No he wanted to tear apart Klaus. He turned away, dragging himself to one of the far corners. |
Tori took the cage and handbook with a grateful smile. "Thank you, and I suppose I'll see you tomorrow at eleven." She turned on the ball of her feet and left the room. Then she frowned to herself. She needed to get home without the cage being seen. Duh! She hit her forehead with her palm, the cloaking spell she learned a couple of weeks ago. Neither she nor the lizard would be seen.
As soon as she got home she released the spell, it had been difficult to keep it up for so long, she lived an hours walk from the shop. "Ah well," she said to herself as she picked up the handbook. "What doesn't kill me will only make me stronger." She sat down with the handbook to read it. Let the lizard out for an hour a day. "Good." She walked over to the fire lizard and unbolted the cage. As soon as the door was open the lizard raced out, almost bowling Tori over. She caught it up in her arms. "Hello gorgeous boy. We're going to have some fun, aren't we?" |
Klaus locked up the shop and sighed, staring at the closed doors in front of him."Goodnight my monsters." He whispered and left to a small apartment building across the street. He got home, tried and drained. He unlocked his front door only to find a picture frame in the doorway. He picked it up and stared at it with sad eyes. Klaus was the oldest of two. In his mind his brother had betrayed him.
The next morning came quickly, leaving Klaus sitting at the front desk with the white cat. The front door was propped open to bring in fresh air, something he rarely did. The cat kept her eyes glued to Klaus. Her mouth opened in a silent growl. She jumped down and sat by the front door. |
Tori ran into work the next morning, only a little late but so nervous that she'd already screwed up her first job in six months.
"Sorry I'm late!" She ground to a halt in front of the white cat, which glared at her. "Oh what are you looking at kitty?" This morning the cat wasn't nearly as creepy as it had been yesterday. "Do I just go out back?" |
Klaus waved. "You're fine. it's rather slow during the mornings. Yeah, clipped to each cage is a list of what the creatures needs, in term of food and cleaning. The wolf has had his meal already, so don't bother him." He said, looking up at her from a laptop. The cat meowed and moved to the door leading to the creatures. "I already unlocked it so go ahead in. Please be careful with some...They may look cute but they normally have bad tempers."
|
"I'll be careful. And sorry again for being late." Tori walked through the heavy steel door to the room with the animals. Shivering as the cold hit her. The door shut behind her, making her jump, but she knew nothing would happen. She began her job, walking between cages, seeing what each creature needed and fulfilling said needs.
She was always astounded by the creatures she was to feed. There was the brilliant unicorn from yesterday, a kind of gerbil thing that looked absolutely gorgeous but she was fully aware that it would probably hurt her if she decided to pet it and a black cat with amber eyes that lay there looking at her so seriously she could swear it would tell her a riddle could it talk. |
The white cat had walked inside with her. As soon as the door shut she quickly morphed into her human form. A thick metal collar wrapped around her pale neck. Her hair was short and pure white and her eyes seemed haunted. "Klaus had forgotten to tell you I will be helping you along for the first couple of days. My name is Blair. I normally am in charge of watching for shoplifters." She was tall and thin with a creepiness to her. She wore a simple white gown and had her nails grown long like claws.
|
As the cat morphed, Tori jumped, that had given her a fright! She had known there was something strange about the cat with the odd eyes, which incidentally looked even scarier in an almost human face.
"Does that collar hurt?" She asked, it looked the type to chafe. Then she cursed her stupidity, the collar was probably the only thing that kept her in this shop, not many creatures would want to live in a place like this. |
Blair reached up to touch the cold metal. "Not really, it's just to keep me in the shop. Or I get a rather sharp zap." She looked down, her eyes sparkling. "Tell me something child...Why were you chosen to work here?" She asked. She couched down in front of the werewolf's cage. "Geez...It's sick seeing him this way." She looked up at her. "He only hires the best of the best or...could it be that you are something...like us?" She asked. She stood up and stood in front of the girl. "The last one who worked here ended up here dead...and the girl before her now has to live here with a metal collar."
