So...The Future...I think we were lied to.
Something that I have noticed about watching older movies, like Back to The Future. Any movie that sets the time for being in the late 90's or in the 21st century. They all lied though. We don't have hover boards of flying cars. Quite frankly I am greatful for that. We have people on the roads that can't drive normal cars, the last thing I need is someone flying over head and crashing into my bedroom.
What this thread is about though, is what you think the future might bring, and what you would like to see. You can also discuss things that you have seen in movies that you wish had come into existence, but has not. As of yet at least. And please, if you like this topic, then please make that apparent by clicking the like button on face book, thank you. |
I also found it funny that the retro-futuristic styles and inventions haven't actually ben used yet. But I guess that's just the time reflecting its own style in a sense. Innovation was a larger deal then, and wasn't quite as focused on minor changes to something we already have.
But I would like to see more chrome used. |D Why? It's chrome. I'm unsure about the fashion sense, though... just yikes. As for more modern movies that depict the near future, I can't really say I'd want any of them to come true. They're all too depressing. There're movies like A.I., which would be cool if it didn't involve oppression of the andriods. I could dig having intelligent humanoid machines, or some of the cars/transportation featured in it. And others like children of men... I just wouldn't want to bother with it. I can't think of any inventions that stood out and seemed like a must-have. |
Ahahahaha! SOOO true!! I was supposed to own a flying car by now! XDDD
hmm well have you heard of the sunglasses that are being developed for the marines that have really cool technolgy built into them. I mean its James Bond status. You put them on and it shows you information about your surroundings, like how the iphone uses GPS to pinpoint your location and shows you icons of the stores around you. Well the lenses of these sunglasses do this. Icons pop up telling you what stores are in the buildings surrounding you and stuff like that. If those become available to the general public I am so buying a pair! I read about them in an article on Yahoo and can't really remember the specifics and now I can't find the article. Well I how what I said makes sense anyway haha XD OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!! and i really really really want space travel to be more available and more ships to be built because I want to join star fleet!! ;DDD hahaha and I want to be able to teleport, someone needs to develop that... because i want to visit other countries but it's soooo expensive to travel :/ |
Oh maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, those sound like cool glasses. |D
I'd want a pair so madly, or at least wear them in case I just want to go somewhere by foot, if I'm looking for a particular street, etc. And I heard about this idea where people could actually build an elevator to the space station, making travel between the locations less costly in the long run. It's doable, and it would be so awesomeeeeee~ The only thing stopping it right now, I think, is just what it would cost to even build this tower/connector. |
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! NO WAY!! A giant elevator going into space! :D that's so awesome! I would totally go! dang it, money always stands in the way... ;(
Oooh what about a Protective Force Field! that would be cool, literally have a personal bubble... protect your home with a force field... never get into an accident again! :]]] |
Yeah, there was that, and I think a private company wanted to have small shuttles that went into space for a short period of time for commercial use.
I can't say I've seen that featured in a lot of films. fffffff- |
haha I actually can't think of a movie with forcefields either.. but it's still cool! ;]
|
Just about those glasses.
I wouldn't want them, at all. They'd just be another advertising excuse - and they sound like they come from some horror movie about a distopian society to engrossed with the material things in life to notice the crumbling society around them. X____X;; As for the future. I'd like to see an alternate, natural, and eco-friendly fuel source replace gas/oil. :] |
Haha, I liked that about the flying cars. I think that whatever happens.... it'll be awesome for the first little while, and then it'll get boring. But I hope we get headphones with the MP3 or whatever built into them, no cords to come out in the middle of awesome guitar solos!

Having space travel more accessible would be absolutely fantastic. I have always wanted to travel off the planet. Unfortunately I don't think it will come in our life time.
I would, however, love to see holodecks, like in star trek. Being able to play out a story yourself would be amazing. Imagine Roleplaying games on a Holodeck? That would just be wonderful don't you think? It's probably a while away, but I could see the virtual reality technology getting to that point if it is every allowed to strive. @carzeebear: Your signature is AWESOME. @Alfred F. Jones:I do not like the idea of a giant elevator going to outerspace. It seems like it is unsafe to the extreme. Of course...I really do not like elevators. @KeiraRose: Well, if there is any sort of sunglass technology being developed for the military, the Marines will not be the first to get it. My husband can attest to that. Heck, they need new amphibious boats and the government is not willing to build them for the Marines because of cost. No, if the Marines ever get that technology then it wont be until the other branches of the military have something far more advanced. |
fffffffffffff-
But it is safe. The way they have the space station attached, it's like someone slinging a bucket of water around in a circle without the water actually being spilled. |D I'm pretty sure if they thought it was unsafe to the extreme, they wouldn't have even proposed a final idea. |
How would that work, though?
The earth moves, would the space station be in the same orbit as the earth? [Because, don't you generally leave the earths orbit to get to 'outer space' I don't think it's very plausible. x-x |
I don't think the space station leaves the earth's orbit, anyway.
The purpose of the elevator would merely just be there so humans could go to a place that's relatively close anyway without needing to use a shuttle for simple missions. Here's a wiki page on it. Yes, it's only wiki, but I didn't feel like looking for anything else on the subject. |D Space elevator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |
The idea of a space elevator has been thrown around for more then 100 years. It's not a new concept and it's a logistical nightmare. There just is not anyway to make it work the way the planning hopes that it will. For one thing, we already know that once you get past a certain point then really tall towers are not sturdy enough. They don't stay still, they move with the wind. Some of the buildings we have can work with that even so, but not something that would have to reach into space.
Still, it would be interesting, but I don't see anything like that happening. It's just not feasible. Let's see. What else would I love to see from futuristic movies that I grew up with though? I would love Number 5. ^_^ That's different though. I just think that wide spread and more easily accessible space travel would be awesome. I would love to own my own ship and just travel through the stars. That would be amazing. |

As for technology I'd like to see, I'm a huge geek and would love virtual reality gaming, particularly for MMORPGs. Like in .hack//. ;; |
Well, I'm pretty sure the materials used for building towers is quite different from what scientists have in mind for this tower.
There's even a video about it on NOVA. NOVA | Space Elevator Carbon nanotubes were also mentioned on the wiki page, but whatever. For the most part, it seems like they aren't even interested in building a tower for this project. |
As for what the future might bring, I get the sense that we're due for a bloody revolution. But this time, I don't think it's the government we're fighting; it's going to be corporations and big business.
Remember in Final Fantasy VII? The people vs. Shinra? Well, it's going to be like that, but it'll be hundreds of Shinras. Apologies for the depressing future. But to lighten it up a bit, what I would like to see in the future is world peace. Flying automobiles. Intergalactic travel. And the return of the Dodo bird. |
This is kind of silly, but why not make Pokemon real? :D
I think Japan would totally go for it. THEY HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY! XD I guess they'd be really expensive at first, unless they want to be like the TV show/game and have a Professor Oak figure just hand out starters. It could be a new sport, complete with stadiums and tournaments and everything! Someone could definitely make a fortune with it though, that's for sure. :P |
... You mean robotic ones, or actually breeding animals? <___<
I'd hope electronic ones... seems kind of cruel otherwise. |
I did think about robots after I posted that. XD
I was thinking more along the lines of a test-tube creation type thing, though. Then see what happens from there. |
I see a Revolution of sorts, but different then what you see here in America at least. My husband and I see bad things on the horizon though...really bad things.
As far as the space elevator, I just don't see it happening. Science could prove me wrong, but I just do not see it happening. Humans have issues if they climb mountains to quickly, how would they deal with that in an elevator? The same way they do in a space ship? Do they have a way? Maybe. I could be surprise, but I don't think it would be a good idea, and I would not use it. I don't like elevators that just go up a few flights of stairs, there is no way I would like an elevator that went to a space station. |
I'm still waiting on my Willy Wonka Chocolate TV. I want one so I can forever have chocolate coming out of my television. I'd actually USE it, then!
I really would love, though, to see the PASIV from Inception in creation. I would always use it to control my dreams if I could. I'd likely become an addict. |
You know, there is a technic that allows you to control your dreams without the use of technology. It's hard to get to the point though. Look up Lucid Dreaming sometime, it's interesting.

I think we should live in cool underground houses, ride solar boards, have clean water, and see people wear some super cool "retro futurism" clothes. And I want virtual reality games! And better traffic control. I'd love to see the Shweeb put into use, actually.
But somehow, I think I'm going to end up looking at future generations going "Man...you all failed me. I am VERY disappointed in each and every one of you!" |
