La Chapelle Review: Resident Evil Afterlife

Hello all. Just recently went to the midnight showing of the new movie Resident Evil Afterlife, and I am here to post, complain, praise, and beat down. <3

For all that have no idea the synopsis of Resident Evil Afterlife, our main protagonist Alice is on the rampage to find the man who is responsible for the destruction of mankind, Albert Wesker, and destroy him. Taking her clones with him she attemps to kill this man, but ends up losing all powers she once previously had, and is forced to join again with a group of survivors in order to find a means to live.

Okay. I will admit, the first of this series was BORING. I am a huge fan of the original RE, always have been, even have the damn tattoo and read the original script, and found this movie to be god awful. As the series progressed though Anderson seemed to found what he was doing, and went with it. Thank god. It's not perfect, not nearly what I would call a good RE film, but it's becoming a good series none the less.

Also for those assuming this film is the last, guess what, it's not. There shall be another.

Anderson loves to show off his wife, that's for sure, and Milla is a fantastic acress. She does show this off in this film, but a few points bothered me. Some plot holes and minor details, as well as some directing decisions of Anderson himself.

There is a TON of slow motion in this film. It beats you in the face with it. Don't get me wrong, slow motion has this wonderful tendency to make amazing fight scenes even more crystal clear, but this man is in LOVE with them. I felt like I was being tortured midway through the movie as I was made to watch the charaters spend two minutes running a straight line. Some is good, too much is terrible.

For those curious, this movie was MADE for 3D. I'm not sure how good it will be viewed merely 2D, but it's fantastic seen with the big screen. Some moments made me jump out of my seat, and even cringe when things came too close to my face, such as weapons and sharp objects.

For use of weaponry in this game... it was oddly laughable. Against zombies, and even more so other living human beings with actual GUNS, you'd think you'd fight with... ya know... a gun? Actually through most of this movie our protagonist choses not to. Instead she somehow learns how to amazingly fight with katana's and sherikens. How? I have no idea. Why? Becuase it looks cooler. That's it. There was no true actual rhyme or reason to it. The other characters are intelligent though, so don't worry.

As for Alice losing her poowers? For those of you who are upset (not me! Thank god) don't worry. My previous arguments with this series was that Alice was TOO powerful. She had little flaws, she had few emotional ties minus the first film, and now she has esp. Gotcha. In this one though we are to assume she lost all super human strength, agility, and powers, especially super healing. This does not seem to be the case. She still fights as if she had all abilities (I'll grant you that she might have become used to the style. That does not allow her to just 5 feet into the air and do a roundhouse to a beasts face!) and, even after a terrible incident, she survives unscatched. Why? I have no idea.

The battle are basic. The side characters are cliche'd. You know who is and is not going to die from the beginning. Don't worry. Also the intro's, such as Wesker and Chris, they never dive into too much detail. We are to assume they will in the 5th installment.

For those of you who enjoyed the others, and havn't seen this one, why havn't you? Anderson is slowly getting better at what he does. For those that have, post you're comments! Tell me what you liked and didn't. I have a ton of questions for this series, a lot of confusion, but I wanna hear everyone else's.

8.5/10 For me. :3

I saw it last night too. I thought it was fucking awesome but I can't believe the ending. WTF?

At the theater I was at, we were watching IMAX 3D for it. The power in the entire shopping area went down, twice. Not cool at all. Everyone got refunds. I wanna go back and watch it though. What happened the second time around, they decided to just make us watch 2D for the rest of the movie (last 20-30 minutes).

What I wanna know is what happened to the rest of the gang. I mean they got KMart back, what about everyone else?

I was gonna watch 1, 2, and 3 when I got home but then I got too sleepy haha. Might as well watch 'em today then.

Likes: The fact that they rescued the survivors. Chris & Claire reunite, yay! The moment he introduces himself as Chris to Alice, my jaw dropped. Claire has Alice-like superpowers...in the sense that she ninjas her way up the wall to fight the Silent Hill Pyramid Head-looking thing. Yeah...at first I thought that huge monster with the axe was Pyramid Head but I had to remind myself that this was Resident Evil, not Silent Hill. Can anyone tip me off if this is an in-game character? I've only ever played Code Veronica.

Dislikes: Mf-ing Albert Wesker survives this shiznit. But he's kind of a hottie, so I'll give him that. Selfish movie producer guy is a jerkoff (the one that steals the plane). Most minor characters die except for the one that got to the storm drain. But this is Resident Evil, of course you know they're gonna die. And I heavily disliked the ending. For reasons of spoilers, I am so not saying.

MAJOR dislike: The Alice clones. One, there's too damn many of them and looking at Milla with another synchronized Milla is quite annoying. Two, they all die off at the beginning of the movie. What's the point?

OMG That movie was AMAZ-ZA-ZING. Saw it with a group of my friends and that was the best part for me.

SaetonChapelle 09-12-2010 01:51 AM

I agree with you whole heartedly Marguerite. Although I did enjoy Weskers character, I feel like they tried to push him way to much to be like his in-game character, which I'm sorry, is never going to happen. He felt way too forced, but I'm glad he is alive. I want a transformation of him for the next movie like they did in RE5.

As for the "pyramid head guy" (which as soon as he showed up my entire party said the same thing, don't feel bad) His name from the game is "Executioner". Or at least that's what he always been referred to as. I wish they informed us more about him, what he was, and why exactly he was like that. I know why from the games, but for those who never played, it's kind just left there. Oo

Marguerite Blakeney 09-12-2010 04:05 AM

Oh okay cool, I feel better that I'm not the only one ^-^ Thanks. I'm also wondering how the "survivors" stayed alive as experiments, long as they did even though some of them got blown up to pieces, and then there's the emaciated dead guys on the autopsy tables in the next room over. There really was no food or emergency supplies.

What I wanna know is why the hell Wesker is killing off the entire world, leaving him as the sole survivor. My cousin says it's just that - he wants to be the guy who survived everything. But what kind of legacy would that leave for him? He'd get lonely eventually, right?

And I don't mean to go political on this thing, but conspiracy theorist site, KnowTheLies.com - The Truth is Hidden in Plain View... has articles talking about the government wanting to kill off everybody in order to "heal" the world. Connecting those "facts" to this movie, it's all I could think of. I'm not a conspiracy theorist in any way, but we've got the omnipotent Umbrella Corporation controlling everything, which sounds a lot like the government controlling us nowadays with how things are going (based on Know The Lies' articles). You can disregard this if you must. I'm just putting it out there. Although with Wesker's thing, I seriously want to know what the hell he's gonna do after everyone dies.

Risque 09-13-2010 05:35 AM

@ Blakeney: I can only assume that they were fed with those tubey things that poke into your body and feed you nutrients.
Also, Wesker is really weird, I mean really. I don't understand why he wants to kill of the world either, and what's up with him just sitting around in that tanker all day? I can only imagine how long he sat in that chair while he was waiting for Alice and co. to catch up to him. :/

It's amazing how many flaws I found in this movie, but since I've sat through the 4 movies so far, I may as well watch the fifth when it comes out, hopefully I'll see an end to the movie series within the next 3 films.

Soundtrack is AWESOME though.

Marguerite Blakeney 09-13-2010 06:13 AM

Hah, if he was seriously sitting there the whole time after the first plane crash, I'd think his booty would have been sore for quite some time. Even I can't stand sitting in an airplane seat/car for hours on end.

What do you think of Alice being human again? I'm not quite sure how that works because she's still got mad skills after Wesker terminated the T-Virus. Either that or she's just a really good assassin.

SaetonChapelle 09-13-2010 04:42 PM

As stated, I am curious about her losing her powers. To begin with I am displeased by the fact that she had them in the first place. I felt disconnected with her character as a whole. She felt pretty robotic through the film, very little emotion, and along with the super powers, I couldn't feel anything toward her. She went from being fairly normal (as normal as she could get) to being able to make peoples eyes bleed from their heads by merely looking at a camera. I could feel no sentimate towards the character, or feel pity for anything she was going through. She could kick a Nemises in the teeth, and suddenly I was rooting for the Nemises.

Sadly, even with her being a normal "human" she seems to still have the characters of one with the virus. For example when she jumped off the bulding using the cable. Let's assume as stated above she hit full velocity (i am determining this from the height of the building). She was not using a bungee cable, she was using a basic wiring cable. She should have been easily slices in half, and even if not, her organs would have been severely damaged. She also landed quite well upon the other rooftop. (or ground? I didn't focus THAT hard)

Also when the Executioner slammed her with his hammer. Let's assume that hammer in itself is well over 500lbs, which I have no doubt. And he himself looked to be quite tall and very well built. The swing of that hammer connecting with her body, launching it to the side, and slamming into the concrete hard enough to break it would have been enough to smash all the bones in her body and destroy her organs EASILY. She should not have been able to recover, yet she did.

In truth, I have no idea how they plan on having us believe she is a normal person, or even care. Her highest level of pain seemed to be when she was knifed in the arm. And even that she just wrapped up and went on her way.

I watched it but not in 3D, I thought the name Afterlife would have more significance to the title. I thought the refernce to Resident Evil Code Veronica was kind of cool at the end with Chris and Claire and how Alice was as always the tough here. I have grown to like Alice even though she has nothing to do with the video game, I'm wondering if maybe she may make a cameo appearance in Resident Evil Six. Overall the movie was a bit above average but still not quite as good as I thought it may be. I guess the hype was a bit too much, but nevertheless; I enjoyed it and think it was definitely another chapter in the Resident Evil Movie Saga.

Marguerite Blakeney 09-14-2010 02:17 AM

Yeah dude seriously, when're they gonna make Alice her own game?

Out of all the RE movies, which one do you guys favor the most?

SaetonChapelle 09-14-2010 04:40 AM

I prefer this one the most, out of the rest of them. I've said my piece about them already.

As for the new game, it's being released for the 3DS. Resident Evil Revelations, staring Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and presumably HUNK as a main character but we are still unsure as to that. My insider knowledge has yet to allow me this small piece of info, of which I am not pleased about, although quite excited.

Alice in a game would definitely make you an instant bad ass for sure. It would almost make Chris, Claire, Ada, Leon, Jill, or even Barry obsolete. I didn't mention Rebecka because she is more of a support character, and as far as Sherry is concerned-- other than the Weskar report we really don't know much about what has happened to her. I'm hoping the Resident Evil Six is able to tie up a lot of old lose ends.

SaetonChapelle 09-14-2010 01:41 PM

I would CRYYYYY if Alice every became a game character. I would lose all hope for the gaming series. oo I don't want super bad-ass-ness, I want REAL characters! Yarg~

I'm not saying I would want that, but rather I was saying if they put Alice in the games, it wouldn't really be any survival horror necessary because little monsters such as zombies, zombie dogs, lickers, or other minor creatures, Alice would be able to not only beat the dead shit out of them, but also use her new psionic abilities to blast them into oblivion.

SaetonChapelle 09-14-2010 05:21 PM

It would be rather redundant. Don't get me wrong, for a Mary Sue character, she's not terrible. But she's just that, a Mary Sue.
This is not to say the original script wasn't.... odd either. For those who have no idea, I do have an original copy and will attempt to either put it up, or find another. In the mean time it was strange, Chris being a farmer and all.... Oo But it was VERY close to the games, right down to the mansion. I will attempt to retrieve it as soon as possible if anyone is interested.

Edited: Script was located:

Marguerite Blakeney 09-14-2010 06:59 PM

Well I guess you have a point. Nonetheless her superpowers would be freakin' awesome.

But yeah, when I saw Sienna Guillory's name in the credits I was like...wait, when the hell did she show up in this movie? And then...for those of us who did watch it...you know. People behind me were squealing and saying OMG OMG OMG!

SesshysMiko 09-17-2010 05:32 AM

I don't do great movie reviews and I don't critique well cause I usually don't find much wrong with movies. I'm not that picky and I see it like well I sure as hell couldn't have done any better. Anyways, this movie was awesome. I saw the preview on Youtube and I hadn't even watched the first ones yet. So...I had to watch the first ones! xD They were scary Dx But awesome. So when I finally got to watch this one, it was awesome. I had to watch it in 2D though, but it was still good. The ending pissed me off....cliffhangers -_- I can't wait for the next one <3333

Marguerite Blakeney 09-17-2010 06:07 AM

I just finished watching the first three again xD This is fun!

SaetonChapelle 09-17-2010 01:17 PM

I've never found the first three as scary. This one had a lot of pop-out horror though which bugged the crap outta me, but that's because I hate pop-out in general. Oo I think it's more the blaring noise of the theater then the actual action which freaked me out.

Marguerite Blakeney 09-17-2010 04:01 PM

It's probably more pop-out since it was filmed in 3D, heh.

SaetonChapelle 09-18-2010 04:58 PM

I'd say that if the actual supposed "pop-out" part where in 3-D. A lot of it was just the characters turning around startled while one of those plagus jerks came out of the shadows.
Jerks~

Marguerite Blakeney 09-18-2010 07:46 PM

I *might* go back and watch it tonight, depending on whether or not my dad gets here, and maybe I'll have a better review for it.

Marguerite Blakeney 09-19-2010 07:52 AM

Okay, so we did go back and watch it.

Chris...looks like friggen Marshall Mathers (Eminem).

Wesker at the end, is wearing a suit made of sequins. I know the material. I used to work at JoAnns and they sell that specific fabric. Wesker is secretly gay? Hm...well if anything, that might explain why I think he's a pretty boy : )

I love the costumes though. Especially Claire's (then again I'm a bit biased toward her because Claire is my nickname/half of my real name).

In scenes where you see Alice flying her plane around, it feels like you're watching a toy, especially through Alaska and through Hollywood. With the 3D effect, that stuff is more evident compared to watching scenes like that via 2D. Kinda sad. The movements were also somewhat robotic, in a sense, also due to the 3D filming. Specifically when Wesker's walking towards the plane in the beginning in Tokyo and dialing the buttons that'll blow up the Tokyo Hive facility.

SaetonChapelle 09-19-2010 02:07 PM

I had an issue with some of the fight scenes especially, and when she jumped off the building on the rope. It was very obvious, which it shouldn't be, that she was attached to a lift. /le sigh

And yeah, I will admit the first half is watching Alice on a plane. xDDDD As for Wesker, I know he was wearing that outfit in the game (huge game player), but I kept giggling at the "seat belt" at his waist. I was wondering if he was scared that he was going to fall off the chair.

Marguerite Blakeney 09-19-2010 08:04 PM

Dude, she let go of the rope when she first jumped off and then in the next shot she's holding onto it again. Continuity, much?

Oh and the beginning when the camera's spinning into Tokyo during "Four Years Later" gave me a headache with the 3d effects.
