The "multi" label
 

If an item has the word multi under it's icon, I usually can't preview it on my avatar. What does that mean?

The multi label means that particular item is a multi-equip item with several different equip modes. At this time, multi-equip items aren't available on the preview function. Its not just your avatar, everyone suffers from it- nothing to worry about. XD

Yeah, the preview doesn't work for the multis because it's not built that way, it was just designed to see single items.
If you think of a regular item, say just sat on a table, while a multi item is a bunch of different things in a box also sat on the table, all the preview can see is the box you see, so that's why they don't show up :)
