Unicorns
OH-EMM-EFF-GEE it's a gay thread!
But seriously, who here knows about the european folklore? It annoys me to see pictures of unicorns depicted as horses with horns because people are too lazy to read the rest of the paragraph which depicts the unicorn with a deer-shaped body, lion-like tail, cloven hooves and long goat-like beard. If you've seen the movie 'The Last Unicorn' you'd know what I mean, they did good work with the folklore in that movie, at least when it came to the appearance of the unicorns. So tell me General Discussion regulars, how do you feel about unicorns? Note; please, no rainbow-farting fanatics. |
I like the horse-with-horn depiction. :]

Shuun!!! Shun the Non Believer!

I never got why it's a horse body either instead of how it's supposed to look. Either way they're creepy. They are plotting to destroy the world and currently they are hiding in a cave on some remote island just waiting for the right time to strike.

This is the first time I've heard of unicorns being that way, I always depicted unicorns being pretty much a horse with a horn. I'm going to go look this up now, sounds interesting and I have time to waste.

how do i find that video again its been years??? "Charlie.... Charlie.... Whatcha doin Charlie?!??" "CHARLIE!!!!" ---------- i agrree with the first post. they should never have altered unicorns the way they did. i actually have posters of real looking unicorns with the beard and all. except the tail is a bit more bushy than a lions but its the closest i could find. they alter everything now a days the same way they did the unicorns, vampires, you never even hear of carpathians, and faires are all weirded out but thats ok caus there can be many different kinds of breeds of fairy all this and what not... >< lol |
Actually it depends on where the unicorn is from what it looks like. There is a type of African unicorn about the size of a donkey and it has two horns, I believe.
|
I always liked Bruce Coville's series about the Chronicles of Unicorn and his descriptions. I loved his books as a small girl.
|
When I first discovered unicorns I pretty much thought it was a pretty white horsie with a long beautiful horn, as a typical 3 year old girl would. Since then I've seen many different incarnations of said creature.
Since it's a creature of supposed "fantasy" it's really up to the interpretation of the artist, although I do like the mostly deer-like version myself. :) |
hmmm never knew unicorns were really supposed to look like that, thanks bro!

I've always been in love with the kind of unicorn you described. x3 They're so cool looking. I remember making my own unicorn information sheet when I was little.

The Epic Unicorn
The original unicorn that you depicted sounds way better! <3 I'm currently searching for a picture, but I'm not having the best of luck. I did come close, though, except it still had a horse head. I also found a picture of a lego sculpture showing a generic, horse unicorn that flies through the air and farts rainbows.

I like the depiction of a horse with a horn on it's head better than the deer-lion-goat thing. It's kinda creepy actually...

Well, i think that the newer version of both the fae and unicorns are better. The older version of the unicorn would never evoke the same kind of love and admiration as the newer version, in my opinion, and the same is with the fae.
New books about the Celtic and Irish fae are coming out, and, quite honestly, they're scary. They kidnap children and fatten them and have them live within their court forever so that their kin can go and live on in a look-alike shell of that person. They sacrifice people for their own uses no matter how small. It's always a power struggle between them, and while some aren't vicious, they're still mischievous and troublesome. The older version of a unicorn, to me, is comparable to a chimera in polarity. You never see children going "I wana chimera doll!!" ( if you're actually looking at an accurate picture) and their bodies are... disproportionate. The body of a deer, if you've ever seen one, is slight, nothing like a horse or donkey, and their horns are supposed to be long and powerful, which says to me that this horn is far too long for their bodies. A lions tail matches not at all, and trying to pretty up this depiction by putting feathered hooves on it is inaccurate, because deer don't have feathered hooves, as far as i know. The last unicorn was... well, i don't really think it was accurate, because it was a dolled up version of a unicorn, to me. But, it was a very good, entertaining movie ^^ |
I've read, that European unicorns liked virgins for a special reason. You know with their horn and such.
I don't think I need to elaborate. I have also read, another version, that unicorns are carnivorous, and would hunt deer and so in groups. For that, they had a mouthful of sharp teeth, perhaps even scarier than those of other predators f.e. wolves. |
Interesting. I've never heard that description before. >.> Maybe they just went to the 'horse-with-horn' description because it was easier to describe/draw/film.
|
I always depict my unicorns that way. :B I think the "horse with a horn" thing is pretty lame, actually.

Anyway, the "original" depiction of a unicorn is amazing and carries much more of a beastly feel to it. Although it is understandable to see how the "horse with a horn" came around (looking at a "real" unicorn image and not knowing specifically what it's composed of can easily be translated to the likeness of a horse, especially if one gets lazy which wouldn't surprise me), it's sad that it spread as that. But hey, credit to those who learn about the real thing for what it is and not what the general public tells you it is... same with any other modernized mythological being. It seems everyone just likes to take things at face value now as opposed to keeping the origins of things with them. :/ |
I loved the movie the last unicorn. I have never liked it that they always seemed to leave out cloven hooves and lion-like tails and beards. It sort of takes away from the whole feel of the creature. Although the Last Unicorn didn't have a beard as I recall but she was a female so maybe that's why?
