Crimson - That's quite a early bedtime! Maybe that'd help me get out of bed in the morning x3. I'm not exactly up to date on Democracy Now's personal views to be honest. I haven't used them as a news source x3.
That's so early! Of course I don't have to leave for class until eleven so it's not so important to get to sleep early. I think the only podcast of those I've heard of us Democracy Now. I'm currently working my way through the ten hours of Free to Choose. There's never enough books are there? I am currently reading Road to Serfdom by Hayek. Elysium - Oh my, I don't want the house burned down! I'm the cook which is sort of unfortunate xD. Indian food is so yummy! In Northern India up in the Himalayas there's a little ally restaurant that serves the best tandoori chicken in the world. There's some fantastic Chinese restaurants in India too. |
@nonsense: Actually, it's kinda nice to see the gender roles reversed for once. My dad was also the cook when I was growing up.
If I ever got seriously involved with someone who couldn't cook, you can bet that I'd have them cooking by the time I was done with them, or they'd be starving while I was sitting there eating a lovely homemade meal. I take it you've been to India? |
I must admit this, I haven't thought about it as a gender role reversal. I think it's more of a, "Please, I don't want you to burn this fucker down." I'm really fond of cooking so I'm also a little territorial when it comes to the kitchen. It's my solitary place and don't you touch my special spatchula!
My father did too, generally on the weekends. I'll admit my mother cooked more than my father but I don't think that was due to typical gender roles but the situation at hand. I think it's good to be well rounded. If you can't cook for yourself you'll either starve or resemble a beached whale in a few years xD. Hehehe. Let's hope this person does! Why am I laughing at starvation and cruelty in the relationship?... hmmm... x3 Yeah, four-five times now. |
She must have done some awful things cooking in the past for her to worry you so much. XD
My mother worked/works nights when I was growing up so she could be with me at home, so my dad cooked. But my mother also can't cook. I mean, she won't burn down the house down, but her food is generally awful. Suffice it to say, my dad taught me how to cook. Lol, it's definitely laughable. XD I do like to cook, and I'll offer to do it quite a bit, but I do expect to come home to a meal every once in awhile. Preferably a time or two a week. I also think not being able to cook is pathetic, so there's that. Does your family have business in India, or do you just like it there? |
Um... *racks mind* Nope, not really x3. The kitchen seeds lies all the time... to keep me close...
The question is why didn't your father ever try to teach your mother? x3 I agree, it would be nice to put the task of cooking onto someone else every now and again. Regardless of how much you enjoy it's nice to just sit back and eat up. Oh yeah, I agree. They believe they have a few business interests in India but we've gone for other reasons. My parents are both doctors and do medical missions in India with the charity/mission/thing their apart of, specifically in the Ladakh. They also help finance several orphanages as well. |
Awh. Darn. I thought there was going to be some atrocious story about her setting a stove on fire and having to call the fire department. XD
My mom is stubborn, she thinks her cooking is the only way. She's also a very picky eater and thinks that a food with a seasoning on it other than a grain of salt is disgusting, so my dad has tried, but gave up pretty quickly in exasperation. Pretty much--and when you consider that some meals take two hours to prepare it can be awful to cook every day without help. It's the time that bugs me, not just the cooking. Oh wow, that's very admirable of your parents. |
No, no, no, I'm trying to avoid the inevitable. A call to the fire department and that long awkward explanation.
Poor, poor, father. It's the dishes! All on the dishes. The longer you cook generally the more dishes you have... They're alright. If you have the resources it's good to have some sort of selfless-ish passion. |
For sure, the dishes are the evil bit. You spend an hour cooking, and then you think you're done only to find you have another hour cleaning. o.<
True, so long as you're doing it for the right reason. |
If I'm super wealthy someday I'll buy one of those industrial dishwashers. Throw it all in there, hit the switch, forget the rest.
Eeeeeh?... x3 I'd rather someone do something good for the wrong reasons than something wrong for the right reasons. |
saw something about real thai food being really spicy.
That's part of why I like it so much :D |
@Ser: Lol, that's why I DON'T like it. XD
@nonsense: Still would have to clean the counter and shiz, though! XP There is no right reason to do something wrong. As for doing right things for the wrong reasons, yeah, sometimes it gets things done, but sometimes people just think they're doing something and they're not. |
@Elysium-
Yep, I would not have meant anything derogative by it in the slightest. @admonished - That way I get about seven to eight hours of sleep as I like to wake up at five am. It is nice to have just under two hours before I need to get ready for work in the mornings. While I only work four days a week, I try to keep to routine on my days off. Today being an exception since I was unfortunately feeling a bit unwell earlier so ended up sleeping from about four till eleven pm. It doesn't surprise that you have not heard of Focus on Politics. Even within New Zealand it is not so widely known. I don't think I have ever met anyone else here who has listened to it. One could hardly press a compelling case for NZ being a major player in international affairs, so this further decreases the odds of someone outside of New Zealand having heard of it. The Young Turks would only serve to irritate you. From your posts here, I can't see you finding very much, if any, value to their show. Democracy Now has potential to go either way. Although in the final instance I would guess they would be more to your disliking. In regards to books, I find it to be quite the opposite. There are too many books and not enough time. To say there are many books which I want to read would be an understatement. They are essentially all social science books with a bias towards cultural/social anthropology. From your book it seems you also have a social science bent. @serena- That is something which I can strongly agree with you on. By this I mean about the attractive quality of Thai food. |
Elysium - Yes, but we'll streamline the process. The entire kitchen will have a drain the middle and sealed cabinets. I'll have two hoses, one with a soapy water mixture and one with a water mixture. I'll spray everything down, leave the room, and turn on some turbines to clean the entire place.
So, what is right? The basics are simple enough: don't hit people, be nice, don't take what isn't yours, etc. Even those basics principles are overlooked in the name of some higher principle all the time. How many things have we done under the right principle of the thing that turned out rather poorly? So what's right and what's wrong and what works and what doesn't? I guess my question is how do you find what is right and wrong when it's a muddled mess between principle and reality. Dun, dun, dun. Crimson - *Shivers* You early folk. We night folk don't know how you get up that early x3. I hope you're feeling better! I really do enjoy listening and watching various broadcasts of opposing political views. I'll admit there are some hosts or and speakers I simply won't listen to. Of course that has more to do with their personalities than their views. There's people I agree with politically that I won't listen to either. I think it's important to debate your views with people who may not share yours. How else will you figure out what's right and what's wrong? x3 If someone comes along and proves me wrong I'll join their side. I'm interested more in the facts than my ego. He's sort of a asshole anyways. That's motivation! I mean if there were too few would you be so motivated to read? I think one of the greatest pleasures in life is you will never run out of books. What a cruel fate if we could ever run out of books. Actually I'm more on a economics rampage at the moment x3. Hayek's giving me a little social science to tie everything together. The reasoning behind it all. |
@Crim: Oh, we all know what you meant by that. [lol] In which case, he better be a good cook if he wants any rewards...like being set free..yeah, let's go with that.
@nonsense: You've a knack for taking simple things and making them complicated. Goes for the kitchen and the philosophy of right and wrong. [lol] Perhaps that's why I've always though philosophy was a crock of bull. |
@admonished-
Using my standard format I shall address your points in a totally different order to which you presented them. In regards to economics, it would seem we have differing views here. I consider it to be a part of the social sciences. As for the books it can be both a blessing and a curse. Mostly depending on what my mood is like at the time. Even getting through the books I own will take a fair amount of time. I am looking at something along the lines of ten years. This is assuming I read at a rate of one book per week. I am feeling much better now, thank you. Although now I am in the situation where I need to stay awake long enough so as to not throw my routine off too much. Will probably sleep an hour or two earlier tonight. When it comes to my book collection, I share your approach. There are several people whom I quite dislike, yet I collect their books. At my former flat if I had three books arrive and I liked the perspective of all three of them, my flatmate would be taken aback. Although I used to rant to him all the time about my disagreements with books I was reading. @Elysium- Your proposed reward is much more generous than I was expecting. I was thinking he might be able to settle for your gratitude? |
Elysium - Nothing's so simple and if it were, it would be absolutely no fun to ponder! The world's complex not some circular flow and there's no simple answers. I think that's just wonderful from a knowledge point of view. What we think is good doesn't always turn out to be good at all. Everything deserves a special degree of examination and that again, is the fun part. A good principle doesn't necessarily lead to a good result. My favorite example of this folly is the War on Drugs mainly because the results (or the truth) are totally counter-intuitive. I loved when Friedman said, "I don't have any doubt about your sincerity, but I believe sincerity is a overrated virtue." We wage wars on passion and principle and the consequences are never pretty. Of course we always get our methodology messed up somewhere along the way. I know I have x3. My views have drastically changed due to being totally wrong about most things xD.
Too long did not read version: Our hearts more often than not will deceive us where sound methodology and logic will not. This sort of thinking makes my relationship very difficult sometimes... Philosophies so much fun though! Ethics on the other hand is super important and loads of fun. Ethics wins! *Ding, ding* ---------- Post added 10-09-2012 at 01:28 PM ---------- Crimson - I think economics could really be considered a bit of everything. What is it? Let's call it a thing and now let's solve it! The the question I always ponder is what are a person's views and how do they support them. Both are incredibly important. Someone can be right for the completely wrong reasons and if they're using such flawed methodology isn't it likely they will be wrong elsewhere and possibly contradictory? So sound methodology is really what I value most. It makes everything far easier. I know it isn't really a answer, but aren't books a blessing and curse anyways? I mean they're time consuming, heavy, all that concentration... x3 Don't worry, I have a lifetime of books lined up already. I know I'll never read them all. That always stinks when you sleep so late and as soon as you're feeling better you have to worry about throwing your entire routine off. I mean, come on sickness. You're throwing punches until the end you bastard. Exactly! There are numerous people I admire and I don't completely agree with them. There's no angels out there who are perfect. |
@admonished-
It is not too surprising that we disagree over it's status as a social science. There are numerous different ways of perceiving the social sciences and the field of economics. Indeed I saw an anthropology meme the other day which effectively posed the question as to what culture is. The answer in the meme was in the form of another question enquiring whether the initial person asking had a day to spare. The same is true of social and society. Yeah, it is also incredibly annoying when you struggle to stay awake all day then right before bed time you get excited and suddenly you can't sleep again. >.< |
It is, it isn't, it might be; that's my view x3. Does it deal with human behavior? Of course! Human behavior is the basis for many of the economic principles dealing with everything from the business cycle to government's role in the economic circle of life.
People spend their entire careers swirling around that question. What a illusive answer. Everything affects everything else. It's terrible! Or was... I'm currently taking a medication for my chronic headaches and it makes me all sleepy. Is that cheating? xD |
At first I misread your question as referring to whether or not getting chronic headaches was cheating. I was quite perplexed as to how you could be held accountable for that. My amazing comprehension skills aside, I wouldn't call your approach cheating. xD I am however quite sorry to hear that you suffer from chronic headaches.
|
Thanks :3. Eh, it really isn't too bad. Things could always be worse! I'm forced to a be a little more diligent about getting to sleep as the sleepiness lasts for about eight'ish hours. I do believe in silver linings!
|
I am more fond of red linings myself, as I think it looks fancy. Although heated arguments about it's tackiness ultimately culminate in the other person storming off while declaring "suit yourself".
|
x3 Hehehe. I prefer... well quiet civil discussions that involve coffee or a mug of tea.
|
I was worried my lack of detail might have ruined it. Although now that you are offering coffee, yes please! :O
Edit: The chapter I am reading just raised an interesting point in regards to using comparisons between apes and humans in order to find the mythical human nature. It is so simple, yet it had never occurred to me. u.u Although in saying that, it has presented many points on primatology that are novel to me. xD Quote:
|
Unfortunately while I can offer you coffee you may have to acquire it yourself. I apologize for the inconvenience x3. Being a ocean apart does damper the ability to send coffee in a timely manner.
I don't even know if you can even mail unsealed perishable items internationally. |
I can't wait till next weekend when Mike comes to visit me. His cds will be in :D
One of them is a cd of a band we like (Korpiklaani) and I got him the cd that has the song Vodka on it (Karkelo). I also got him a cd by For my Pain. Both are finnish bands we like. ^^ I know the cd I got him of For my Pain (Fallen) has 2 versions, the one in 2003 and one in 2009. The most recent one has a few more songs on it than the 2003 one and one of the bonus songs is one of the many he liked. I tried to look for the recent one, but it would have cost me between $40-50 because of it being an import. I found it, after searching for awhile, I found it for $19.99, with $3 shipping. ^^ I am so excited, I can't wait till the cds come to me. ^^ Gotta wrap them up and make them look nice :D I spent a bit for his birthday gifts, but we usually spend a little over $30ish. ^^" Birthday and Christmas are when we spoil each other with a little bit more expensive gifts ^^" But, I know he'll be excited to get the cds and I'll tell him a story about the For my Pain one :D |
