Oh cool. :) I never read that manga, but I'm familiar with it.

Goblin Maiden 03-09-2011 03:06 AM

I've never read it either, but I just finished watching the anime a little while ago. 8D I loved it.

Clair Voyant 03-09-2011 03:07 AM

I never watched the anime either... xD

Goblin Maiden 03-09-2011 03:17 AM

It is adorable. I highly recommend it. 8D

I'm sorry, I know this is going quite far back, but I haven't been able to be here recently due to travelling and apparently this came up just after I left off:

Seriously.

Dude, seriously? Where did you learn about drugs? Yes, people actually used to believe that about LSD but any recent research on the drug will tell you that there is no evidence for long lasting effects. And there are no recorded deaths directly associated to LSD. Yes, if you're already stupid, you might do something stupid that will end up harming yourself (very very rarely others). If you have a decent amount of common sense though, you will realise when you have truly stupid/dangerous ideas.
Finally, while dealers sometimes cut powder drugs (such as cocaine) with other things (usually harmless things though there is of course always a risk, which is why smart users buy from sellers they know - there are various ways of making sure you can trust your dealer) so they can sell less of it for more money, LSD is not taken in powder form.

I'm not saying it's completely risk free, but according to recent researches (for example the one done by former government drugs advisor David Nutt), it is one of the least harmful drugs out there.. and actually, since you all started talking about alcohol afterward, that one is almost at the top of the list in that research. On a similar level with crack and heroin.

Sorry about my little rant there but attacking someone for what they choose to do so vehemently as you guys did, spouting out myths as facts with no back-up to your statements really gets on my nerves. Please note I'm not encouraging drug use, I'm just saying don't say stuff like that when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Clair Voyant 03-09-2011 07:42 PM

@ ljosberinn::
Don't apologize for the rant, I actually found it very interesting and informative. :) That was stuff I hadn't ever heard before. ^^

ljosberinn 03-09-2011 10:12 PM

Phew. I was a bit afraid people would find it annoying and unnecessary. There are a lot of myths going around about drugs that people believe as fact that are just so far from being true. I really think there should be better information going around about drugs because well, let's face it, there will always be people tempted to take them anyway and if they are actually well informed about what it is they're doing, there would be a lot less problems around it - doing dangerous drug cocktails, buying from dealers they don't know and/or can't trust, doing it in potentially dangerous circumstances/with untrustworthy people.. the list goes on! But as long as drugs remain this big taboo, people are going to stay uninformed and misguided.

seaturtle16 03-09-2011 10:14 PM

So, awkward time to jump into the conversation, but I'm gonna give it a go anyway.

I'm friends with BlackCart29 in real life, and she suggested I check out this thread. I'm new to Mene and I'm trying to get more involved. :)

How's everyone's life? :)

Clair Voyant 03-09-2011 10:26 PM

Hello, Sea. :)

Well, that makes sense... I'm not really for the use of drugs, BUT what you wrote was very informative. Thank you for sharing.

fairywaif 03-09-2011 10:32 PM

Well, i know Craig Ferguson (of the Late Late show with Craig Ferguson) took LSD as a youth and he occasionally (I'm not sure how often) has LSD episodes. But I'm not sure how common that is.

But yes, cigarettes and alcohol are MUCH more dangerous than LSD or marijuana, yet they're legal. It's slightly ridiculous.

@seaturtle- I just finished reading a book called Fire in the Turtle House. It's about the papillomas that have been showing up on the sea turtles lately. It's very interesting, although a little sad. I really want to volunteer at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium this summer.

seaturtle16 03-09-2011 10:43 PM

Did the book mention why they're on the turtles? Are they doing any damage to the turtles? I mean, I know papillomas are generally benign, but there must be something going on with them for there to be a book about it...

I volunteered with animals at shelters when I was younger; it was a lot of fun, but as I got older and busier other things pushed it out of my schedule :-/

ljosberinn 03-09-2011 10:46 PM

Hey seaturtle, no worries. I'm alright, hoping this damn cold will go away, been bugging me for almost a week now (and making me unable to do much at all since Sunday..) but getting better bit by bit. How are you?

The LSD "flashbacks" apparently do exist, but not in the way people think they do. I know that you should never use wikipedia as a source, but frankly, I am too tired to look up more reliable sources at the moment. (Emphasis mine.. what's the plural of emphasis anyway? Emphasises?)

Quote:

In some rarer cases, flashbacks have lasted longer, but are generally short-lived and mild compared to the actual LSD "trip". Flashbacks can incorporate both positive and negative aspects of LSD trips, and are typically elicited by triggers such as alcohol or cannabis use, stress, caffeine, or sleepiness. Flashbacks have proven difficult to study and are no longer officially recognized as a psychiatric syndrome. However, colloquial usage of the term persists and usually refers to any drug-free experience reminiscent of psychedelic drug effects, with the typical connotation that the episodes are of short duration.

People used to think people who had taken LSD would have major flashbacks for the rest of their lives (actually, I think a lot of people still believe this) where they would have massive hallucinations and be completely out of touch with reality while it lasted. I think it was mostly connected to American soldiers who were given the drug (without their knowledge) while fighting in uh.. damn, I can't remember now. Congo? in the 50s and 60s. Which must have been a pretty damn terrifying experience, and I've heard stories of a lot of them getting very extreme flashbacks, which I would guess was more due to a horrific situation being made even more horrific due to severe, unexplainable hallucinations. (Again, too tired to look up decent back-up for this, so don't take my word for it!)

But yeah, the whole cigarettes and alcohol being legal while LSD and marijuana aren't is really ridiculous. But then, "important people" are making a lot of money from those two, so... :/

Edit: Also, I need to sleep I think. Night!

seaturtle16 03-09-2011 11:02 PM

I'm doing pretty well. I have tomorrow off of work, and I'm looking forward to sleeping in, and making a fantastic breakfast for myself, and drinking a full pot of coffee (as I am wont to do on my days off :))

I'm currently fighting off a cold my chef had a week or two ago. It left him with a URI, out of work for 4 days, and on some pretty hefty antibiotics. I don't wanna go there, at all. I'm sorry to hear you're in the same boat...Maybe we'll get better in tandem?

Edit: Have a good night!

fairywaif 03-09-2011 11:14 PM

Well apparently one of the problems may be that a lot of the sea grass beds are getting torn up, forcing the turtles to eat algae, which can contain a dinoflagellate that induces tumors, and then they get sick with a virus that makes them grow. It's very saddenijng. And the worst part is it seems to be jumping species. :(

BlackCart29 03-10-2011 02:51 AM

Hello everyone!

I've been busy traveling, and have just hooked into WiFi. How is everyone?

Ljosberrin - very informative and well thought out as usual. I have a question to pose though. I haven't ever taken LSD myself, but was at the gym with a friend of mine when they had a flashback. He said it was because he was burning fat and some of the drug was stored there, blah blah blah, I'm just curious if your information leads you to believe that flashbacks are possible in some cases, or just not at all?

ljosberinn 03-10-2011 10:35 AM

Seaturtle, massive breakfast sounds good (though I don't drink coffee, unless generously mixed with alcohol.. >.> ). Sorry to hear you've been ill too, it really does suck. Thankfully I'm feeling a bit better today, well enough to function and get stuff done at least! Which means I can go to the darkroom tomorrow to get some proper work done, woop!

BlackCart, no, flashbacks are definitely possible, but in most cases (apparently there are exceptions, but they're supposed to be rare, and/or results of chronic use of the drug) they'll be very mild. I've had what I suppose could be called flashbacks, in that I saw something that reminded me of what I saw when I was tripping. But it was simply seeing a tree and feeling like the dimensions and colour were a bit off, but in a beautiful way, or when I was in a forest and felt like the trees I was looking at were a row of 2D pictures.. sort of like in the movie Labyrinth, when she finally finds the door into the maze - it looked like a solid wall but when she walked into the gap, she realized the walls in front and the back just looked the same. I'm not sure how to explain this better, especially as I just woke up.. *yawns*

Also, LSD is not actually stored in fat cells or spinal fluids.. it's processed by the liver, the flashbacks are apparently purely psychological. Again, I only have wikipedia to back me up, as I need to get up and shower and stuff, but it links to some external stuff if you're interested. It's actually a very interesting article, or list of urban legends about illegal drugs.

Edit: I also really like your avatar.. it reminded me in a strange way of Frank, from Donnie Darko. Guess it's the eyes and ears..

Goblin Maiden 03-10-2011 03:45 PM

Good mooooorning everybody! *Mai belly-flops into thread and lands on a pile of fluffy cushions* What is up?

Clair Voyant 03-10-2011 03:49 PM

Good Morning, Goblin. :D How are you?

seaturtle16 03-10-2011 03:50 PM

@FairyWaif - That is very sad. It's always hard to see the negative impact of things people do without being aware of the consequences. It also makes me think about exactly how connected every one and everything is.

@Ljosberrin - Breakfast is my absolute favorite meal of the day and taking the time to make and enjoy a good one is a day-off tradition for me. I have yet to find something to mix alcohol with that makes it any more palatable to me, but I do love coffee :D I'm glad to hear you're feeling better (I am too, aside from a slightly runny nose). You mentioned a dark room; (at the risk of sounding stupid) are you a photography student? Or is that your job?

@BlackCart - I'm so glad you're back! I missed you!

Goblin Maiden 03-10-2011 03:53 PM

I am doing well, Clair. 8D Just sipping my coffee here and replying to a roleplay. O 3o And you?

Clair Voyant 03-10-2011 04:01 PM

Just relaxing before I head to work. :)

ljosberinn 03-10-2011 04:08 PM

Seaturtle: I like the smell of coffee (especially in the morning) and coffee flavoured things - chocolate, ice cream, yoghurt, etc... but I've only recently realised I can drink coffee, though only with alcohol. I don't particularly enjoy it, but I'm not splurting it out either, so meh. When I need the caffeine boost, when going out and such, I'll force it down.
And yes, I'm a photography student, final year, which is pretty daunting.. constant anxiety about finishing this stuff and what the hell I'm going to do once I do finish. >.< What are you studying?

Goblin Maiden 03-10-2011 04:10 PM

Oh, cool. 8D I myself am relaxing a bit before I must head off to study for a test. 8P

seaturtle16 03-10-2011 04:13 PM

@Ljosberrin: Baking and Pastry Arts. I attend The Culinary Institute of America, and I'm currently finishing up the first semester of my sophomore year. This semester is an internship (which on top of giving you work experience and broadening your understanding of the industry is a huge boost to your resume), which I've been doing in western New York. It's been fun but I can't wait to get back to campus; all of the fun classes start when I get back (pulling sugar, cake decorating, chocolates and candy...SO INTERESTING!)

BlackCart29 03-10-2011 04:55 PM

Interesting info. I just got up to. Oh, spring break.

I like your avi too! Mines a result of being mene-broke right now because I love the market feature so much, all I have to wear are my multis LMFAO.

Hey seaturtle, good to see you over here~
