Well, obviously they need to be worn sometimes (you shouldn't be walking through snow, or in a forest with thorns, or in a city where you can step on dangerous debris without them) but in your home and your own backyard and parks and such, there's nothing wrong with it.

My family also owns a boat so I go shoe-less a lot on docks and around lakes.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 06:52 AM

Yeah lol I don't always go without shoes, but a lot of the time I do.
I've gotten cut before though. Today I did because the cat was outside and there was a tornado so I went to fetch him, and I still have no idea what cut me.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 07:08 AM

Lol. Don't ya love that? I have very pale skin, so whenever I hit something just a tad too hard, I end up with a black bruise. People always think I've done something horrible to myself when it's just that I've bumped my knee on a corner, or on the bottom of a desk and didn't notice.

sarofset 05-13-2011 07:13 AM

I have German skin. We are pale, but nearly indestructible. lol.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 07:18 AM

I don't bruise or scar easily, but I sunburn like crazy.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 07:28 AM

Pfffft. I am German. Half German, half Danish with a shitton of other stuff mixed in there, but mainly those two. I burn like hell. If, perchance, either of you ever come across a brown-haired woman squeeing over spf 300 sunscreen in a Wal Mart one day, you'll know you've met Ely. Kekeke. Seriously. Anything below spf 85 does absolutely nothing for me.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 07:37 AM

Kita is a Heinz 57. O_o Lol.

I'm part German though.
And Native American.
That I know.
I go back to Vikings. Yarr.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 07:41 AM

Lol. That's the first time I've heard that term!!! Lord knows I'm worthy of using it to describe myself.

I also have Native American...totally don't look like it, but I does'eth. Other than that it be German, Czech, Croatian, Polish, French, English, Danish.....aye. Probably a bit of it all got hanky pankied into thar somewhere.

sarofset 05-13-2011 07:43 AM

ah. Blame the burning on the Czech and Polish. They burn like nothing. lol. Of course I'm part Italian so I have a burn for like a day then I'm all bronzed and all. :P I love it.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 07:45 AM

Either give me some of that awesome Italiano blood or :talk2hand: . ;)

Eh. I don't really care. It just took a little while to figure out what I had to do to prevent myself from burning. Now that I realize I have to use spf 85 + and reapply it every hour, I never burn.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 07:50 AM

I use "Heinz 57" to describe my nationality all the time!
I dunno what all is in here.
I'm pretty sure there's a bit of everything. XD

I burn myself on purpose, so I can tan. That sounds really strange, but I like being tan in the summer, and I can not tan unless I burn first. I burn once, and then I can tan properly. A lucky trick of genetics? My dad is totally pale, like me, but my momma is tan all the time like her dad.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 07:54 AM

So...I just realized that Polish and polish are spelled the same way. >.< Gawd, English is a horrible language. Lol.

I have a friend who does that. She always refused to wear sunscreen. Then my family decided to take her out boating with us one day and I told her "your ass better wear sunscreen or cooked lobsters will be jealous of you." She didn't wear it and then proceeded to bitch about the three layer skin peeling burn she got from it. She has listened to me since about burning herself. Lol.

But then, she has always been the chick who has to get burnt once to learn her lesson. Haha. Pun. Heh...

`Kitami 05-13-2011 07:58 AM

LOL! I figured that out when I was trapped in the house for a few days last winter. I had a lot of free time. x_x

Haha. I won't wear sunscreen either. But like I said, I do the burn-then-tan thing. :eager:

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 08:01 AM

Yeah. That's what she does too. But still, she now wears sunscreen when we take her out on the boat.

Ely just doesn't want wrinkles.......and sunburns are painful...so she's hyper-obsessed with wearing sunscreen in the summer.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 08:16 AM

My parents never let me stay in the water for too long, because I wouldn't wear sunscreen and the water reflects the light.
That's one thing I like about the creek that I swim in- the light is filtered.

I'm not to keen on getting all wrinkly either, but its going to happen some day anyway. -shrug- I can't escape forever.
The possibility of skin cancer bothers me, but again, a lot of things might cause cancer.
If I worried about everything that could happen, I'd live a horrid life. :P

ljosberinn 05-13-2011 03:36 PM

*butts in* Really though, skin cancer is a very real threat, especially with the Ozone layer deteriorating and all that.. I'm not too good at remembering to put on sunscreen, though I have learned to at least do it at the start of summer. Once my skin has gotten a bit tanned I usually don't bother too much. Viking skin burns fairly easily. :x

sarofset 05-13-2011 05:41 PM

...Alright well the ozone layer is a cloud and has been proven over the last few years to be getting more abundant.

Skin cancer comes from anything that will cause swelling. Therefore using sunscreen is great, but I'd say go out till you're slightly pink a few times to build up your resistance, and then try to use less of it. Gets you a bit more vitamin D. Most people have a deficiency.

ljosberinn 05-13-2011 07:09 PM

...it has also been proven to be diminishing? Regardless of what you choose to believe about it, it could still pose a serious threat, so it's up to you whether you want to take that risk. And I would say, get slightly tanned to build up resistance, then use less of it. You will still get enough Vitamin D. And most people have a deficiency of Vitamin D? Where is that from?

sarofset 05-13-2011 08:12 PM

It's from the fact that Vitamin D comes from exposure to sunlight. It's a hormone produced in your own body. No one really goes outside enough to get the amount they need. That's why they put it in milk and such, and yes, they put it there, it's not there naturally.

and the "risk" is minimal. every time you get a paper cut the risk is the same as the most severe sunburn you'll ever get without needing treatment from a hospital.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 08:25 PM

Somehow I highly doubt that sunscreen removes your ability to soak up Vitamin D--I would need to see some proof from medical professionals to believe that. And yes, most people have a HUGE deficiency of Vitamin D. Info. It is a great cause of SAD, otherwise known as seasonal affective disorder. I have it, an ex of mine had it, and several people I know have it in the winter. If you want info on that, look it up on your own.

Sunscreen is very important, and I believe arguing against using it in the summer is just somebody wanting to come up with a reason to be lazy. The harmful UVB, and UVA rays that make it through our atmosphere (whether or not it is deteriorating) will cause you skin cancer in your old age if you don't move to protect yourself against it. It might just be a tan now, but it will not be "just a tan" when you're in your 60's and older.

sarofset 05-13-2011 08:39 PM

No. it will not cause anything. It increases the chance in the same way anything else which causes swelling does.

When something causes swelling your white blood cells begin to focus on healing the damage instead of checking new cells. A cell that's mutated slips through, and begins to multiply without actually having a function. That's cancer.

If one bad burn would cause cancer then none of us with northern European heritage would exist anymore. Our kind would have all died out long ago. In snowy areas it's considerably easier to get a sunburn because of the reflected light.

If you want to prevent skin cancer, get any new mole which looks at all off checked, and take Vitamin C and D to boost your immune system.

and as for sunscreen blocking it.

And I'm not lazy. I just don't slather the stuff on a foot thick like a lot of people do. I get sick less, and have better bones and teeth. I use a kind that's about... spf 40? I think. It's a spray on that doesn't leave me all sticky. lol.

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 09:00 PM

Like I said, I use spf 85+ sunscreen and I haven't gotten sick in over two years, and that is not from lack of being around uber sick people either, lol.

Me? I'd rather not get those moles that should be removed because they are/could be cancerous. Besides that. Skin cancer doesn't always come in the form of moles. Example.

Sunlight doesn't cause skin cancer????

The UV rays from the sun cause the mutations you had mentioned. Why would one go about having to be freaked out about removing things when they could all but completely prevent the need to do so in the first place?

`Kitami 05-13-2011 09:01 PM

I'm not lazy, I just don't want to cover myself in funny smelling cream. O_o
I have never liked that stuff. My mom used to fuss over me with it, and I'd jump in the water to avoid it. >_>

ElysiumFate 05-13-2011 09:02 PM

That I give you. It does wreak, lol. I used to avoid it like the plague, too. The thing that bugs me is when people go about saying that it doesn't do anything.

I've had family members die from skin cancer that was obviously caused by exposure to the sun without sunscreen. It's a horrific death.

`Kitami 05-13-2011 09:06 PM

I just don't care if someone wears it.
Probably when I have kids though, I'll be like "PUT IT ON, YOU MUNCHKINS! :illgetu:"
But I just can't stand it, personally.
