"Perhaps." Léan did not seem very enthusiastic about having any kind of shelter on land, but he didn't comment on it. Instead, he took the gift, and didn't complain about it. "If you want to get home any time soon, we should start your lessons as soon as possible, and turn you into a seasoned swimmer."
"Can I at less finished the house before I go back to the swimming so I have a nice area to sleep in when we get down with it." He turned the fish to cook the other side of it. Adam smiled to Léan and watched his fish. "I do want to get home quickly but I don't think one day going to matter much right. I think this house will help me more over the course of the swimming lessons." He smiled happily he wanted to be on land more then in the sea any day now.
"Fine. Do as you wish." Léan's tone had once again become painfully formal. The friendliness from the previous night seemed to have vanished...was it really that easy to lose trust with him? He was silent, and settled for watching Adam cook the fish. He wondered how humans could do such a thing to a perfectly good, juicy fish...he, for one, preferred the blood and guts over having a dried-out piece of meat...
"Please don't be that way Léan. I will do lessons with you. But I want a nice house or hut to go in when we are done." Adam sighed realizing he made the merperson un happy in some way. "I will start them as soon as the huts done I promise." Adam was worried if he didn't keep up with the lesson the merperson would leave him alone and he would be trap here for ever. Adam looked at the fish it looked done he took it from the fire and started to blow on it.
Léan's tail flicked back and forth, thoughtfully, as he sat there. He didn't answer Adam...not for a bit, anyway. When he finally did speak, what he said was totally unrelated to their little spat of sorts over lessons and building the house.
"They probably think you are dead, you know." His words were solemn, but cold and short... |
Adam didn't like what his new friend had to say. "Well.... I would be if it wasn't of you. but you could have brought me back to island so they could have found me! No one would have knew you were there if it was night...."Adam was remind of how much he wanted to go home. He was grateful to be alive but he missed his family. He didn't want to live on this island he wanted to go home! He looked down at his fish and started to cry thinking of home.
"I do not like getting close to human-populated places...they make me uneasy..." Léan explained firmly, making a face. He hated it when people cried. It was much less obvious underwater when someone was crying...but still, he couldn't stand it. "You do not need to cry. Crying will not solve anything..." he muttered, stubbornly. "If you want to get home so badly, the only thing that can help you will be learning how to swim properly."
Adam was really up set he just wanted to go home nothing more and he was being told it was his own fault for not being able to swim. He was taking it hard because he wanted to get home soon but he was not able to learn how to swim quick enough. Adam wiped his tears away and just stay quite looking at his fish. He didn't say another word just ate in quite. Adam was in deep thought and it was painfully clear what Léan had said effect the boy in sum way.
Léan didn't disturb him as he ate. He was a loner--everything about his attitude suggested that. He was cold, standoffish...not used to being around others. So, he sighed, lowering his eyes.
"...I am sorry, for my brashness. I am not used to being around others...so forgive me if I seem a little cold," he apologized, softly. "You learn at your own pace...but please, make an effort to do so..." |
Adam eyes slowly looked back to the merperson as he spoke, his voice this time calm Adam down. It made him feel like he could get home and see his family same day. "It... okay.. I...ummm I understand... I mean.... You probably some me gone just as much as I want to get home any ways right?" He sighed and nibbled more on his fish it was not season but it was still good. It was now much better hot then it ever was cold. "I will try to learn... I mean you had me in the water almost all of yesterday....." He said shakily remembering being scared in it.
Léan laid himself down, resting his head on his arms and peering up at Adam curiously. "The water is not scary. I mean, if you were in my shoes, you would not think it is terrifying in any way..." he hummed, absently. He fell silent after a while, and then absently began to sing under his breath.
Unfortunately, he'd forgotten that he was dealing with a human and not another merperson. Therefore, he hadn't though to explain about the Song Of The Siren. The singing of merpeople had odd effects on humans...it was hypnotizing. |
He finished his fished and set the stick on the ground away from the fire, then Adam lower his head. "When I was small I about died in my friend pool... after that I hated water..." He said softly he before the soft song started to effect him and his eyes watched Léan. He lightly moved his body to the sound of the singing. He had not gotten up yet be it looked like soon he would get up and move to Léan.
Léan's singing stopped for just a brief moment. He nodded in response to Adam's statement, murmuring something that sounded like, "I am sorry to hear that," before the song began again.
His voice was a soft, airy tenor...musical, and lilting. He had not noticed Adam's odd reaction to his singing. This was one of the reasons merpeople and humans never mixed. The songs of merpeople were mesmerizing, but could also be defined as a mild form of mind control, especially to those sensitive to its effects. |
Adam shaked his head a little when the singing stopped. "yea...." Then it started again and Adam slowly stood up and started to make his way to Léan. He slipped ihis feet in to the water in a daze as he moved closer to the sing. His body moved to the soft sing and he was unaware of his actions.
Léan did not notice. He was staring off into space, as he sang. He was singing...without saying anything. The language of the merpeople had two distinct forms...the language of speaking, and the language of singing, which could only be understood by them.
He stayed where he was, in the nearby shallows. He was in knee-deep water, just lounging in the water. |
Adam was now up to his knee in water moving closer to Léan. He reached where the singing was coming from and started to lower his body in to the water infront of Léan. He just wanted to be closer to the singing he could not help him self it was so very pretty.
Léan was still singing when he turned, and was startled to find Adam almost directly in his face. He wasn't startled enough to stop singing, however...he was just very curious about what was going on. He'd heard about the effects his Song could have on humans...
But he'd never experimented. |
Adam tried to lay right next to Léan so he was as close as he could get to the singing. Adam had never heard this sweet sound before today and he could not get enough of it. Adam's arms push his body up in the water so he was floating next to Léan.
Léan's tail flicked back and forth. Interest flooded his expression, and he shuffled around so that Adam would have enough space. This was fascinating to him. His singing continued--it was a strange sound...but so utterly pleasing to the human ear...
Adam was in a daze by the song and when Léan move to give him space Adam once again move closer. It seemed Adam was almost minicing Léan body movments. The best a human could any ways. His feet moved together like Léan's tail did and he moved his body was the water but he tried to stay close to the sound.
Léan watched him, head awkwardly tilted to the side. He didn't stop singing...instead, he intensified his singing. This singing was often a reason merpeople were chased out of settlements and cities...they would fall in love with humans, and attempt to use their voices to gain their affection.
Adam did not feel he was close enough to the singing he had to get closer too it. He need to be near the singing it was making his heart race he didn't understand it at all all he know is were ever the singing was was wear he want and needed to be. Adam moved his hands from the sea bed and wrapped his arms around Léan body.
The moment he was touched in such a way, Léan's singing was cut short, and he fell silent. His shoulders went up to his chin, and he seemed rather tense. He wasn't sure what the hug meant, though it was warm and felt sort of nice...was he just being friendly or was something else going on?
When the singing stop Adam blinked. "ummm what how I get.." Then he realize he was hugging Léan and let go. "Ummm sorry." But when he let go he didn't realized he was in the water in un til his head went under and he paniced. His arms and leg thrashed around until he was able to get his head above water. He tried to calm him self when he did he realized he could stand up in the water that just what he did next. "Léan how I get in the water?"
"...You walked out into it?" Léan answered, grinning slightly. "I'm sorry. I forgot to mention...tell me. Have you heard stories about my kind in the past? Specifically, stories about the singing of sirens?"
