Know the feeling Sleepy. I've travelled around the country a lot with the parentals and on my own a fair bit but with all the shows on TV these days like Postacards or Coxy's Big Break you hear alot about smaller places sometimes also.
You may have heard of Horsham being mentioned being linked to the Grampians...or through all the flooding we copped early 2011.

Sleepy Anarchy 04-30-2013 06:49 AM

Nah, it's not that. I'm pretty sure i've been there before, but it definitely wasn't with my family.
And I've kind of never heard much about the Grampians.

Actually... Is there a speedway in Horsham?

Sure is! The Blue Ribbon Speedway. It was on last saturday.... Races are held once a month. Not sure of the date for the one in May but the Big one is comming up on the 8th and 9th of June as the Hubby is with the SES and goes out every race.

Sleepy Anarchy 04-30-2013 07:05 AM

HA~! That's why I know it! Dad used to race there occasionally. it's been a long time since I've been there. I liked the place.

Ah coolies. Doesn't race any more or have changed to a different type of racing that blue ribbon doesn't have any more?

Kind of both. He used to Race V8 dirt modifieds. His was rather recognizable, he had spongebob on the side of it. He rolled it over at avalon early last year, so he stopped running that and instead we've now got 4 go karts that we run on dirt tracks. I don't think they run them at Blue Ribbon though. It's a shame. Given how dad always described the track, it would be so much fun to race karts on.

Phoenixphyre 04-30-2013 07:30 AM

I'll ask the hubby if he remember the spongebob car when he comes home from training tonight. It sounds familar though so i probably would have seen it one year or another. Bummer it getting rolled though. Hope maybe you guys do get it back on the track and come back up this way, I'll cheer for ya from the sidelines!
No no kart action at blue ribbon though, not sure why though....it could be good for karts from what I've seen. I had more to do with the Hidden Valley track though. Not sure if they do karts up there any more or not.

Sleepy Anarchy 04-30-2013 07:37 AM

He probably won't, it's been at least 2 years since we were there. he loved the track. it was one of the few that meant he could race on even terms with everyone else, even with the smaller engine.
It was a damn shame when it rolled. It rolled on the first night of a 2 night event as well. We got it back into the pits and had about 20 people working on getting it apart to see if it could keep going. We were all up until about 2am and we thought it was good, but then we looked at it again in the morning and it had busted a main part of the chassis, so dad wasn't willing to drive it.

Aww, that's a shame. In the two times it was there, it looked like it would be an amazing track for karts. particularly for me. It looks like the kind of track i'd just have too much fun on and forget to stop.
Hmmm. Hidden Valley. Sounds less familiar to me, but i've still heard of it.

He might remember it... he's been working the speedway with the SES for about 11 yrs now. Can't hurt to ask.

Man that sucks about the chassis though, better to be safe than sorry though so totally get why he was unwilling to risk it...would have been nasty.

Hidden Valley is the track up in Darwin. They race the V8 supercars there sometimes now, I still think they have the dirt tracks though for stock cars and dirt mods, but it's been a few years since I was up there during an event.

Welcome to The Billabong Sleepy Anarchy: !

Good to see another mexican in here!

Two top enders, a cockroach (me), a (what do you call some one from SA?) south australian, and i think there was even some one here for a bit from WA and Tassie too! Did we have a Canberran here as well?

Anyways, quite the collection we now have!

Ive got a few mates here that do racing. A couple of them went down to Tassie for Targa recently. Day 2 of the racing they rolled their Evo twice and were out for the rest of the race sadly. Looked brutal as hell seeing pics of the wreckage too, bloody lucky to walk away!

Theres a couple of speedways here near me, but the one kind of racing i really do like is WRC. THATS some crazy CRAZY stuff! [wha]

Oh, and i remember why i remember Horsham now too! My GFs mother and her BF went down that way to the Grampians recently, and i think they were either staying there for a night, or doing something else there at some point. So yeah, thats why its familliar!

Bearzy 04-30-2013 11:07 AM

And then we have the kiwi who has been lurking for a while going "the- the slang- I - can't... whaaat?"

Ling 04-30-2013 11:51 AM

[poke]

*pokes Bearzy*

Bearzy 04-30-2013 11:54 AM

Whatchupokinmefor? [feesh]

Okay lets see if I can remember all these.
Vic = Mexicans
NSW = Cockroaches
QLD = Banana Benders
NT = Top Enders aka Texans (goes in with the Mexicans there I think)
Tas = ???
SA = Crow Eaters
WA = ???

Ah yeah probably stayed at Halls Gap maybe which is a smallish town right at the base of the Grampians. I love it up that way, so peacefull and quiet.

@Sleepy Anarchy - Just asked hubby about your Dad's car, he remembers it and was wondering what happened to it. He said it was a damn shame.

Sleepy Anarchy 04-30-2013 12:17 PM

Woo! Photos from the weekend are up now! Time to go and decide which ones I want.

Ling 04-30-2013 01:14 PM

The only one of those terms I've heard of before was top enders for people that live in the NT.

Now I feel somewhat un-Aussie.

Catch Me If You Can 04-30-2013 09:24 PM

I agree with Ling, I've never heard of any of those terms. I feel real un-Australian now :3 I need to update my words to be more Aussie.

Drop Bear 05-01-2013 01:20 AM

Crow Eaters, never heard that one before.

And i think Tasmanians are called 'Two Heads' arent they?

Either way, i think we all need to brush up on our wordiology a little bit more so we're fluent in our own language lol! [lol]

Looks like ive got a parcel waiting to be picked up today too! Not sure what it is, though ive got a few things on the way so its a bit of a guessing game. GF is going to be here in about 3hrs to go to her grandparents place so im debating whether i want to get it now, or get it later on the way there...

Also, that reminds me of an awesome bit of luck i had recently too! See, i got this nice shirt from the USA. They shipped it over, i got it out of the box to try it on and one of the snap-on buttons broke! The bottom section broke into two and now the shirt was useless because the buttons are riveted together to hold them onto the shirt, so i couldnt even try to fix it myself!

So i thought id send a message to the company i bought it from and see if they could get me a couple of buttons to try and fix it myself! They told me it was an old cut and the manufacturer no longer produced it but they offered me a 25% refund on it, and would ask them about buttons. I figured this was the point that theyd blow me off and id just get a bit of a run around about the buttons til i gave up, so i let it go.

Then i figured i might as well try the manufacturer, what they heck, right? So i sent them an email, and they wanted to know some details about it and that was all fine and dandy. Then they said that i couldnt put the buttons on myself unless i had an industrial rivet machine! So they were going to send me an entirely new shirt instead! WOOHOO! I was cheering, because they didnt want the other shirt back either, which I'd thought they would!

Then, not long after that bit of good luck, the first company get back to me and tell me that my buttons are in the mail and i should have them soon!

So out of that, ive now got 2 shirts for the price of one, and replacement parts for the broken one, PLUS a 25% refund!

Im pretty damned happy about that, and customer service from the manufacturer was outstanding! [mrgreen]

Phoenixphyre 05-01-2013 04:42 AM

Woot great score there dropbear! If only all international shopping experiences would be as easy as that! I've had some nightmares so I tend to try and stick to things within Australia these days. So yeah how awesome is all that for coming together for you! :D

Tas = Two Heads works good for me

Don't stress Catch Me If You Can and Ling, it took me a few years to hear the names before and it wasn't until I actually moved to Victoria did I find out about South Aussie's being called Crow Eaters of Victorians being called Mexicans. Hee guess we all learn something new every day.

Sleepy Anarchy 05-01-2013 06:00 AM

Hey, I've never heard of any of them.

Except the two heads one. Because a Friend made a joke about that.

Phoenixphyre 05-01-2013 06:24 AM

I did hear of a lady back in the mid 90s who as a joke made a two headed teddy bear for a new grandchild....a friends of hers saw it and wanted one then a few more people wanted one also...she made quite a business of it of the two headed tasmanian teddy bear!
Come to think of it I am am guilty of making a two headed bunny toy for a friend who lived down there. :D

Ling 05-01-2013 08:24 AM

It should be the two-headed Tasmanian Devil!

Though I don't get why they're called two heads in the first place, then again many of those names don't make much sense.

Phoenixphyre 05-02-2013 04:06 AM

From what I can remember Ling I think the Two Headed thing came from an old joke about Tasmanians being inbred or something. It's an old thing anyway but the name still sticks around. :D But I agree somethings no matter how old or new they are just don't make sence! :D

Drop Bear 05-03-2013 01:55 AM

Yeah, the basis for that is that theyre separate from mainland aussie, so its the same people breeding down there and by now theyve got two heads! :P

Cockroaches is because NSW has HEAPS of roaches
Cane Toads because QLD has HEAPS of those buggers too. And Canadians because theyre above NSW, which they think of as the USA, especially since they can call the Victorians Mexicans for being below them!
No idea why SA is full of Crow Eaters though?
Top Enders should be fairly obvious though, theyre at the top of australia in the harshest area pretty much i think?
