I had only one class today, and now I'm trying to write a paper for speech. fun.

Hyena 02-10-2011 11:03 PM

I suppose I was kind of lucky that I was an art major. Having a comic book series to work on between classes was how I made my body of classwork more cohesive, rather than adding to my workload. My prof was like "I like that you have a theme going. Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but its a good thing." And I had to stop myself from saying "Desert Lore? Environmentalism? Universal Healthcare? Skinny white guys dating big black dudes? Cannibalism?" Because he didn't know that I was working on comic books. He HATED comic books. xDD

TaiyoTsuki 02-10-2011 11:06 PM

I don't think I'd have liked having him as a prof then.....

Hyena 02-10-2011 11:19 PM

Its a common stigma in Fine Arts. Comic books are traditionally simplified drawings of what people think could otherwise be realistic, and dealving into fantasy is one of those things that teachers prefer you to keep out of your body of work because they would rather you make a statement about the world you live in rather than one that you made up. Plus, I think there's a misconception that drawing for publication is selling out, which I think is a little silly since I work at Walmart anyway.

Creative Writing profs didn't care for it because it was more visual than literal and it was hard to judge a story when the mode of communication was through pictures.

Ah well. You don't do it for anyone but yourself anyhow, so there's no big issue. xD

sarofset 02-10-2011 11:36 PM

I write for me, and I do it quite well. finished a chapter today, and got about a page and a half of another one. :) I'm smokin man.

TaiyoTsuki 02-10-2011 11:59 PM

*is munching on an apple*

I should make dinner....

Hyena 02-11-2011 12:04 AM

Unless it is your JOB to write for someone else, there is no reason for you to be writing for anyone other than yourself. There's leeway for things like school assignments, but most teachers in the Creative Writing department are happy to let you put your own spin on things.

I'm, sadly, still on the same page that I've been working for the past week... busy busy...

TaiyoTsuki 02-11-2011 12:20 AM

I know the feeling...:stare:

Hyena 02-11-2011 12:26 AM

Mind you, I'm working on The Bend, the Prequel to The Bend, getting things print-worthy, AND working a part-time job. Oh. AND making plans.

Half of my life is devoted to comic books. xDD

TaiyoTsuki 02-11-2011 12:30 AM

At least it's an income?

Hyena 02-11-2011 12:31 AM

What? Walmart? Or comic books? Because comic books are costing me more than it is bringing in at this point. xD

TaiyoTsuki 02-11-2011 12:33 AM

Um...both?

Hyena 02-11-2011 12:36 AM

xDDD

Walmart is income, but that's about it. I'm sure they know that I have no intention of staying at the level that I'm at right now and are actually surprised that I have not yet quit.

All totalled, I think I've only made about $100 off of The Bend, and it usually costs me about $40 a month. >_____>

Labor of love.. xD

Hyena 02-11-2011 08:19 PM

I'm awake before 4.

Something about this is wrong.

TaiyoTsuki 02-12-2011 02:30 AM

Yes it is.

Cardinal Biggles 02-12-2011 02:37 AM

ROTTEN. DENMARK.

TaiyoTsuki 02-12-2011 04:23 AM

How is Denmark Rotten?

Cardinal Biggles 02-12-2011 04:47 AM

...It was a Hamlet reference.
I was just chiming in with the "something is wrong" sentiment.

Hyena 02-12-2011 08:10 PM

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."

God, I had the STUPIDEST conversation last night. Me and Nick were talking about comic books and this dude who works in Electronics pipes in when I state my opinion on Superman:

"I think Superman is kind of a dick."
"Saying Superman is a dick is like saying all the people in the military are dicks because they save people."

PLEASE TELL ME that I'm not the only one who thinks that this statement is full of fallacy.

Cardinal Biggles 02-12-2011 08:28 PM

YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE.

Let's face it, there's really no active saving going on in that operation. I just... No.
-is polite because Taiyo was in the military-

Hyena 02-12-2011 08:56 PM

I'm just wondering how he got from "I hate Superman" to "I hate the military." The precursor to what he said was "Superman isn't a dick, he SAVES people." But see... Daredevil saves people... and he's not really a nice person. Nor is The Flash.... or any of the firefighters in the greater Muncie area. I know some doctors who save people. They're asshats, too.

Yay Objectivism: its not the thought behind the deed; its the deed itself that defines the person's alignment.

I have nothing against the military. A LOT of my friends are in one branch or another, and my best friend just got into the Navy. But it seems like what the military does to people is it takes attributes of people and turns them all the way up to 11. For some people, that attribute is a sense of leadership or an understanding of the world, but for some people its a sense of entitlement, or a temper. I think that's what happened to this guy.

Cardinal Biggles 02-12-2011 09:04 PM

I get what you are saying. Not only that, but you say it better than I ever could.
My own pacifism likes to rear it's head though. The amount of money we spend on the military (and yet we can't afford body armour for the troops?) is extraordinary, especially when that money could be put to such positive good. And it saddens me that we have to teach a section of the population how to kill.
I don't mean to offend you Taiyo, I really don't. Actually, I think the navy is probably the best of the bunch. Maybe the coast guard too. You nautical folks.

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:23 PM

To be quite frank I think our troops should be home by now. The middle east will be a powder keg till time ends, and it will erupt the second we leave, no matter how long that takes.

A standing army is however quite necessary for a stable country. Whether it belongs to the state, or it's private security. That's just how things work.

I'm very much a pacifist, in that I think most problems can and should be solved by negotiation, however when war is necessary, it should be total war, not a "police action." People should just step out of the way, and allow wars to be won. War is a terrible thing, and it should be, and because of that it should be an absolute last resort.

Once again, my views on an issue being somewhat inconsistent.

Anyways... comic books. lol.

I prefer comics, with heroes like in most marvel comics. They'll kick a bad guy's ass, but most of them never, ever kill.

Stan Lee say that heroes never kill people, unless they have absolutely no other choice.

Cardinal Biggles 02-12-2011 09:28 PM

I believe diplomacy is always the best route to take. It should be exhausted before it's given up on.
I support the sentiment behind Amy Goodman's quote
Quote:

War is not the answer to conflict in the 21st century

sarofset 02-12-2011 09:33 PM

I believe so as well, but some people are simply not reasonable. Those in the middle east who blow themselves up to kill people who disagree with them are not going to respond to diplomacy. They're just not. Mind you war won't help either, and I think such things will be a problem on the global stage for a long time, if not forever.

And again. Comic books. This thread is about comic books. lol.
