Nika relaxed on the couch, crunching though a couple strawberries and enjoying it.
Dawn curled up in the corner of the couch, and ended up drifting off without meaning to. It was late, later than she usually stayed up, and she was probably going to end up waking at sunrise like usual.
Nika turned off the TV and put everything away, covering her with a blanket before retreating to her room. She'd probably be up for a little while longer.
Dawn woke up a while later. Even though the apartment still seemed dark, she knew better. It was sunrise. Sitting up, she realized she had the blanket over her and made a mental note to thank Nika later. She got up and went over to the window, not sure whether or not she was glad it wasn't east-facing.
Nika was still fast asleep, turning over a few times in her sleep. She wouldn't be up for a little while yet.
Dawn watched the stars fade and the sky lighten for a little while. She wasn't able to go back to sleep, so she spent a while trying to translate a couple of her favorite songs into ancient Greek to amuse herself.
Nika got up a little while later and went to go get breakfast. She had a gun stuck in the back of her sleep shorts.
Dawn was picking out a tune on her lyre softly when Nika came out of her room.
"Morning," she greeted. |
"Morning. Sleep well?" Nika glanced over at her before she went back to her cereal.
"You want food?" |
"Slept fine," Dawn replied, setting aside her lyre. "Food sounds great."
"Hope you like cereal. Or I think I might have something else edible around here." Nika paused. "Maybe."
"Cereal's fine," Dawn replied. "How'd you sleep?"
"Alright," Nika replied hesitantly.
Dawn noticed her hesitation.
"Nika, my father is the god of truth," she said. "I can kind of tell you're lying." |
Nika rolled her eyes. "Sometimes the truth is worse than a lie."
"Alright, then as your friend, I want to know what's bothering you," Dawn replied.
"Nightmares," Nika admitted after a few moments. "Nothing worse than the usual."
"I can't really help with nightmares," Dawn said. "Not exactly my father's area of expertise... Mind if I ask what they were about?"
Nika sighed. "I know, it's not your area, it's more the Oneroi and a couple others. Need to go bug them again."
She was silent for a few moments, not looking at her friend. "You know I've seen some things most humans never do. I've also done some things that I regret. A lot of that haunts me, in nightmares. Most of the time it doesn't bother me, because I have an arrangement with certain gods, but sometimes even they can't protect me." |
Dawn went over and gave Nika a hug.
"I won't say it's okay, because it's kind of not," she said, "but I do know that the next time you want a day of just... normal, let me know. We'll go out and have a day of movies and shopping or something like that." |
Nika nodded, kind of relieved, and hugged her back tentatively.
"Thanks. I appreciate that." She blinked a few times. |
"No problem," Dawn replied. "Let me know when you're ready to go, we can head out to my mom's place to get the old guitar."
Nika nodded and went to go get what she'd need before coming back.
"Okay, I'm ready to go when you are." |
"Alright," Dawn replied. She slung her quiver across her shoulder and grabbed her bow and lyre. "Want to just go in my car, or do you want to follow me there in yours?"
Nika shrugged. "Depends. You going back to camp afterwards?"
