"Alright," Nika conceded. "I'll give him a chance." She crossed her arms over her chest.
"Just punch him if he starts humming love songs, alright?" Dawn teased. "He should have more sense than that, though." She was tempted to try to look ahead to see if the two ended up together, but she restrained herself. She didn't have enough control over her visions to pull up something that specific, and really, she doubted Nika would be freaking out so badly if she didn't feel anything for Jason in return.
Nika muttered something but nodded, settling down a bit. "You should probably get back before your brothers freak out and think I've kidnapped you or something."
"Probably," Dawn replied. She shrugged slightly. "Come on, come back to the bonfire with me. I swear, I'm sitting out the rest of it. I'm forcing one of the younger boys to start leading the bonfire."
"Fine. But don't expect me to be pleasant." Nika followed Dawn back to the bonfire, still rather grumpy.
Dawn walked with Nika back to the bonfire. She sat down next to her brothers, but didn't jump back into the music immediately. Instead, she just listened, only jumping in when a particularly difficult section made Alexander stumble, or when it wouldn't sound right with only one set of strings. It might have been natural for them to have a guitar in their hands, but it still took practice. She paused when a vision swept across her mind.
She saw someone unfamiliar leading her brothers. He was wielding a bow, which made him obviously an Apollo boy, but she had no idea who he was. Then it changed, and she saw herself sitting in an unfamiliar cabin, with a group of unfamiliar boys. It all felt strange and oddly unnatural, but also strangely familiar at the same time. She blinked herself out of the vision, confused. Nobody else noticed her lack of attention to the bonfire music, as far as she could tell, but that was okay. It gave her time to think a bit. |
Nika sat there quietly, listening and brooding. She still wasn't in the greatest of moods, but oh well. She'd survive.
After pondering her vision for a few minutes, Dawn got up and slipped away from the bonfire. She got the feeling that she should tell Chiron about what she saw. Maybe he had some idea of what was going to happen.
Chiron was off by the lake, having received a message earlier. He was already pondering it.
"Chiron?" Dawn asked, trying not to interrupt his thoughts too badly. "Are you busy?"
"No," Chiron said, turning to look at her. "What's on your mind, Dawn?"
"I just Saw something," Dawn said. "While I was at the bonfire. I kind of wanted another opinion on it." She paused for a moment to try to figure out where to begin, and then explained what was in her vision.
Chiron was silent for a moment before he handed over the letter he'd just received to her. "Read this. I believe this will explain to you."
Dawn blinked and took the letter. She read it twice before looking up again.
"An exchange with the Roman camp?" she asked. "There are Romans? When did this happen?" |
"A long time ago. The same time this camp was formed." Chiron shrugged. "We do exchanges once in a while to swap ideas and such. It should be interesting."
"Wait, so some Roman kid is going to be put into my cabin?" Dawn asked. She paused as she realized that it was going to happen to all of the cabins. "Oh I can't see this going over well at all..."
"Everyone complains for the first few days until they realize they're not so different after all. Then it goes very well." Chiron smiled, rather amused.
"We'll see," Dawn muttered. "So then why did I see myself in a different cabin?" Almost as soon as she asked the question, though, it dawned on her. "No way... I'm being sent to them?"
"All the cabin leaders switch. It's easier than trying to switch campers. This is why we always insist on having at least two others as second-in-command." Chiron shrugged. "Makes the transition a little easier."
"I still don't think this is going to end well," Dawn muttered. "Alright, whatever. Any idea when the exchange will be, so I can warn my brothers?"
"In a couple days, three maybe," Chiron said. "Don't worry so much. The Romans aren't as bad as most people make them out to be."
"They conquered Greece," Dawn replied flatly. "I think we're supposed to hate them on principle."
Chiron shrugged. "Suit yourself," he said quietly. "You'll be living with them for two weeks, so you'd better get used to the idea."
Dawn sighed, resigning herself to it.
"We'll see how this goes," she said. She didn't mention how she didn't want to leave Seth behind. |
Chiron glanced at her, amused. "You know, I could arrange it so you could take someone along, if you wanted," he said casually. Since he is Chiron he sees all.
