She and her sister live as easy as you can in such a situation by travelling to and from the Range, which they fortified in her fathers last month, to the many scattered safe houses in the surrounding cities and picking up supplies in the abandoned shops. Melee weapons of choice is the machete...or the simple frying pan. Other: Is terrified of Witches and was a Straight A student, doesn't help her in this day and age though and it saddens her. |
The supermarket was completely deserted, giving it an almost eerie atmosphere. The shelves were empty, apart from a few cans scattered here and there. People most likely gathered what they could while they were alive. My eyes scanned the shelves for anything remotely edible. The three of us hadn't eaten very well in days, so I was determined to find something.
All of a sudden, music blasted through the speakers. I jumped and heard laughter behind me. I turned to see me fiancee, Jimmy standing there. He walked up beside me and smiled. "Sorry about that, Quinn sat on something and it came on." Quinn could be quite clumsy. You could tell I was his sister. I looked up at Jimmy, who towered over me, "I don't think there's anything here." That's when I saw it. A single can of beans. I ran straight towards it, despite Jimmy yelling for me to come back. Quinn must have heard, because soon I could hear him calling me back too. They ran right after me, guns at the ready, just as I picked the can up. I smiled, "We're eating tonight boys!" |
She was scanning the street infront of her for infected, her AK held close to her person, finger always hovering above the trigger, when the loud eerie screech came from across the street. She readied herself for a Hunter attack, it was definitely a Hunter screech she heard. But no further screech came and she heard another sound, one she had not heard in so long. Laughter. Male, there was a new breed of infected? No, it was definitely healthy and it had come from the Supermarket across the way, which was were she was headed anyway.
She quickly ran through the shadow of the buildings to get to the Entrance of the store, not a sound did she make, silence is the best defence until force is needed, force being a good shot or a Pipe Bomb. The doors were already smashed in so she needn't bother to open the door, she bent down and walked through, quickly raising her AK on the other side for precautionary reasons. She saw three shadows further into the store, she turned off her flashlight and switched on the Infrared Sights, a little red laser came from end of the gun and disappeared further into the store. She realised how hungry she was when she saw a few packets of Knorr Instasoup, she quickly stuffed them into her backpack and kept her gun up and pointed at the shadows. As she got closer she realised they were survivors. 2 Males, one female. Older than her by the looks of things. The lady was just about to nab the last can of beans and instinct took over. She whipped out her secondary pistol and pointed the two weapons at the back of the female's head and kept her AK locked on the other two. "Put the Beans down." |
I instantly froze when I heard the voice. I didn't know there were any other survivors, I thought we were the only ones.
I looked at the girl. She looked a lot younger than me, and I was the youngest out of the three of us. I raised an eyebrow, it shocked me that a girl that age could even control a gun. "No, we found them first." Quinn looked from me to the gun,"Are you insane?! Give her the beans!" I shook my head,"No! Unless you want to starve!" Jimmy looked at me, "Listen to your brother Kayla! Unless you want us to get our brains blown out, give her the beans!" "NO!" |
Artemis couldn't continue in her argument with the girl. A loud cry, like a cow "mooing". Artemis knew she had only a few seconds to react when she heard the sound of the last remaining window to the store being shattered by the massive arm of a Charger. The damn yelling from the, obviously, inexpercienced survivors must have attracted it's attention.
Artemis pulled the girl backwards with such a force she dropped the can of beans and fell into one of her partners, the other jumped backwards and pointed his gun at the oncoming Special Infected. Artemis let rip with her AK while waiting til last second to dive sideways. The Charger smashed full force into a stand of Computer games at the back of the store. This angered Artemis, "YOU TWAT! THAT WAS COD, I DON'T HAVE THAT ONE!" |
I fell into Quinn as the Charger ran into the stand of video games. I tried not to laugh at the girl's reaction.
"QUINN GET HER OUT OF HERE!" Jimmy yelled as he kept his gun locked on it. Quinn grabbed my arm and dragged me to the back of the supermarket, gun at the ready, and into the main office. He looked out of the window before opening it and climbing out. He held his arms out to help me climb out too, but I had other ideas. I stared down at the grenade I was holding. Quinn noticed what I was going to do. "Don't you dare!" He yelled, trying to climb back in. I ran back through and pulled the pin out of the grenade before sliding it along the floor to the feet of the Charger. "RUN!" I yelled. |
"What are you doing??" Artemis hissed as she shot at the charger one last time and bolted to the door of the office, dragging the second male with her, that blast was going to attract a few of the infected, it was going to be a blood bath if these amatuers were left out in the open. She had to get them to a Safe House, now!
Pulling the dark haired dude through the door of the office and out through the open window, she saw the Blondie attempting to climb into the alley below, disasterous considering the Grenade had just gone off and she could hear the howlings of the horde from down the alley opposite, it wouldn't take long for them to click that there was food in the vicinity. She hissed to the girl, "Pull him up now! Hide! Take position and shoot!" |
I did what I was told and grabbed Quinn's arm and dragged him up.
I got my gun out and hid before taking aim. I knew I wasn't the best shooter, but I could still hit stuff, plus, I was still a bit shaky from the previous attack. Jimmy looked at me, "You okay?" He asked quietly. I nodded and kissed him, "I'm fine..." I looked over at the horde and took a deep breath before taking a few shots. |
"Boomer Bile incoming!" Artemis yelled as she tossed a canister of Boomer puke towards the street she and the survivors had the best chance of getting a good shot in. The canister exploded and green bile mushroomed outwards and the horde went insane, running straight for the little puff of green. Artemis took aim at the green mark and let rip at the slowly accumulating crowd of zombies.
|
We all fired shots towards the horde, I kept count of the ones I killed. Me and Quinn would challenge each other, and he hated it when I got more than him.
"Seven, eight, nine, ten..." I said quietly to myself each time an infected went down. I glanced over in Quinn's direction to see him counting too. I smiled, we must have looked so weird. Jimmy was used to it, but the girl must have wondered what we were on about. |
As the last of the infected horde went down in a spray of bullets Artemis smiled, "Thirty-two." Kamikaze will be impressed. She looked at the three others as she straightened up and strapped her AK across her back and took out her lighter pistols. "Who are you and why are you intent on attracting every infected person on the planet?" Artemis questioned them at gun point, she may have just saved them but it didn't mean she trusted them.
|
Once the infected had been destroyed, I stood up and smiled.
"Twenty three!" I said as I high fived Quinn. He smirked,"Twenty seven." I scowled. He beat me. I froze when the girl started questioning us. This was the second time she'd held us at gunpoint. Jimmy stepped forward and forced a smile,"I'm Jimmy," He pointed to me and Quinn,"And this is my fiancee Kayla and her brother Quinn." He paused,"We don't usually attract that many. We're usually able to handle it." Quinn stepped forward,"Are you from District One?" He asked. We both stared at him, despite the fact that we were searching for that, we barely spoke of it. |
Artemis laughed, "Hell no. District One, it's a myth." Her dad had told her about it the day before he passed away, a quaranteed area with no infected-safe, immune civillians leading relatively normal lives. In truth, she always wanted to see if it existed, but she rationalised that it was mere myth, like camp fire stories.
"Where are you from then? You honestly cannot be running around alone, can you?" The blondie asked her, staring down the barrel of her pistol. She lowered her pistols, her socialising skills were a little less than brilliant since she had only her sister to talk to, she was the only person Artemis trusted. "I live with my sister, a lil fortified shooting range due West. I was scavenging until I stumbled across you lot. How long have you been out alone that you are able to attract the horde within a few minutes?" |
Quinn shrugged,"No one thought zombies were real, now look." He fell silent, you could sense he was disappointed.
I suddenly chose to speak,"We're from the West coast. We've been moving for a few weeks. More than two months anyways." I paused,"We were part of a group at first. But after a few days we got seperated. It's just us three now." Jimmy nodded,"The West coast was pretty bad. Our group was attacked by a few of those...things,"he said, nodding towards the supermarket,"And some got attacked by these things that cry...We don't know what happened to the others." My eyes widened,"There are more survivors?" |
"If there were more survivors, they're bound to be dead now. You must be well prepared and equiped to deal with these things out here, plus, it's like Hell out there." Artemis suggested. "The SafeHouses in the city housed at least fifteen survivors each, they had guns and food. Some heard of District One and ran off...and got killed, so yes, there are definitely, maybe, another ten survivors in America." Artemis smiled and turned her gaze back to the blonde, he did look disappointed, but he had to face facts. He'd never make it to District One alive.
|
I looked up at Jimmy,"Then where are we supposed to go?"
Quinn suddenly looked up,"Well, there's no point in going to District One anymore, I mean, let's face it. It's either die getting there or die here."He spat,"We'd be as well just giving up." Jimmy narrowed his eyes,"We can still try." He growled. I stood between them,"Guys, this isn't the time to argue. We can think about this overnight and see what we'll do in the morning." Quinn rolled his eyes, but nodded anyways,"Fine..." I held Jimmy's hand and looked up at him,"Don't get mad at him. He's just disappointed is all." |
"There's one Safe House in this city left complete, you know, without Zombie damage. But it's around seven o'clock, night's gonna be rolling in and you'd never make it to the other side of the city with your level of Zombie attractability." Artemis thought hard, she had taken the truck with her this time, not the bike. There was enough room but how would Kamikaze react to her bringing strangers to the Fort. It didn't matter, her father had taught her that she had to help when it was needed. It was morally the correct thing to do, these poor buggers were a little clueless about survival in Artemis's books. They'd probably argue against ehr allegations, but, oh well.
"Stay close, stay silent and follow me. We're going to go back through the store, gather as much supplies as we can and then head through the alleys directly across the street and to the carpark at the back of the motel on Diago Avenue." |
Jimmy sighed,"Okay, I won't get mad."
I stood on my toes and kissed him,"Thank you." Quinn looked at us, a look of disgust on his face,"Can you not do that please?" I stared at him,"Why not?" He sighed and crossed his arms,"Because he's him. And you're my little sister." I shook my head and followed the girl through to the supermarket, Jimmy following close behind. "What the hell does he mean by 'he's him'?!" He hissed. |
Artemis shook her head at the two boys, well, they were men technically but with the way they acted with each other would suggest otherwise. She stepped over the exploded Charger carcass and grabbed the last surviving computer games as well as any food she could find, she signalled for the Blondie to watch the doors incase of any Zombies.
|
I shrugged,"Just ignore him. Plus, you said you wouldn't get mad."
I searched the shelves quickly and picked up the single can of beans that caused all this in the first place. I placed it into my bag and proceeded to search the rest of the supermarket. I managed to find a few more things, like two cans of mixed vegetables, a tin of pineapple chunks, and some soup. My backpack grew heavier as I wandered back. Jimmy forced a smile,"I wondered where you went." I rolled my eyes,"Seriously, stop worrying about me. Quinn is less concerned than you." Jimmy sighed,"Someone has to." |
"Right guys, get ready, we're leaving." She hoisted her backpack off the floor and onto her shoulders. Pulling her pistols from their holsters she scoped the street infront of the store and then signalled for the others to follow her.
|
We all grabbed our things and followed her across the street. It was completely deserted, rubble and pieces of paper littered the ground, and it looked depressing. Every city they had gone through looked the same.
I looked at the girl,"How far do we have to go?" |
"Another block, or so, we have to hurry, the sun's gone down, we'll be at a major disadvantage soon if we don't hurry!" Artemis muttered and hastened down the street infront whil on red alert.
|
We all ran after her, I tried my best to dodge the rubble and obstacles in the street. The bag on my back was pretty heavy now, so I was kind of weighed down a little. Jimmy grabbed my arm and dragged me along, but because he was a lot taller than me, with much longer legs, I struggled to keep up with him.
