What is...

This "Derp" word I keep seeing around in the internet..?

I don't have a clue at all. D: Call me slow or do you live under a rock but I have no clue what "derp" means. :(

"Derp" is an expression sometimes used online to signify stupidity, much like the earlier forms of “duh” and “dur.”

:) Hope that helped.

Ahh. Understandable.

Derp.

Yeah, derp indicates that something is stupid. XD My boyfriend and I call things herpaderp all the time. I don't know when that word came about, it seems fairly recent, but we picked up on it. I think it's funny. >_>

Evolution, actually.
Language really can't "devolve" (devolution is a fairly unexplored concept to begin with)--it just changes and adapts based on how people use it...that's the beauty of language. It's so fluid.
The more people that can use it to communicate effectively, the more successful the language.

It spawned from the depths of the internet. You needn't know more than that.

Soul 04-02-2011 03:53 PM

haha, I use that all the time. I used to say "Duh." when one of my friends would ask something dumb jokingly, but now I say "Derp :P"

Actually, the band Devo have this whole devolution concept- hence the band name (it's kinda touched on in this interview but not really. Oh Yes, It’s Devo: An Interview with Jerry Casale

The writer William Burroughs once said that language is a virus from outer space. That people talking was a form of illness, and communication is an attempt to infect others with our ideas. Communication is a communicable dis-ease.

If that is so then the Tower of Babel would have been a good idea.

A cool movie that explores these concepts is Pontypol, starring Bill Moseley of House of 1000 Corpses and Repo! The Genetic Opera fame.

watch somebody tell me this post is offtopic too.:-x

PumpkinSpark 04-03-2011 10:29 AM

Elluh 04-03-2011 04:05 PM

In the 34th episode of South Park entitled “The Succubus,” (original airdate April 21st, 1999) the character Chef has quit his job as the school cafeteria worker, and has been replaced by a new character named Mr. Derp. The character performs slapstick cliche’s, strikes himself on the head with a hammer, and exclaims “Derp!”
Seems to have come from that for anyone acting or looking kind of stupid.
