Harry just shrugged kind of helplessly. Mouse trotted over to go greet Thomas, while Osanna exchanged looks with Naomi. He smelled weird, and she sneezed quietly.
|
Naomi could tell he was different, too, she just didn't know how. And on top of that, there was no justice in the universe if a man was that pretty. It just wasn't fair.
"I didn't know you were having company, Harry," Thomas commented as he scratched behind one of Mouse's ears. There was a subtle question underneath the comment: 'should I come back later?' |
"I wasn't expecting company," Harry said mildly. "Thomas, this is Naomi and Osanna."
Osanna nodded to Thomas, looking him over. He was just too pretty! So not fair... |
Thomas nodded at the two young women.
"Ladies," he greeted. Naomi agreed wholeheartedly. It just wasn't fair. She paused for a moment. Something... seemed almost familiar about him, and she didn't know what. Then she blinked, and nudged Osanna. Am I going crazy, she signed, or are their eyes shaped the same? Thomas briefly raised an eyebrow at the sign language, and just as briefly wondered which of the two actually needed it. |
Osanna blinked, looking between the two of them. Then her eyebrows shot up.
Sort of, yeah, she agreed. Except for the look. Predator. She nodded to Thomas. Not a predator. She looked at Harry. Harry just shrugged at Thomas again. Thomas would find somewhere to sit if he wanted to sit. |
"Good, it's not just me then," Naomi replied aloud. There was really no need to sign that one. She understood what Osanna was pointing out, though. She got the same impression. She still had no idea what kind of predator the newcomer was, but she agreed with Osanna's assessment.
Well, that answered the question about which of the girls needed the sign language. "Well, then, I hope your guests don't mind the intrusion," Thomas said. He looked at the girls and grinned a bit. "It's not often that Harry gets such pretty company, though I do what I can." |
Harry rolled his eyes at Thomas, shaking his head a little. But he didn't say anything, just gave Thomas a look.
Osanna watched Thomas, more curious than wary of him. But she didn't speak, or try to express her thoughts. She just relaxed back against the couch. |
"Well, you're doing just fine," Naomi replied as she watched him. She wasn't all that wary, either, but she still kept an eye on things. "We kind of got dropped here unexpectedly."
Thomas cheerfully ignored the look from his brother and focused on the girls. There was something strange about them, the speaker moreso than the silent one, but he wasn't sure what it was. All he knew was that they weren't completely human. "Then it's a good thing you ended up with Harry rather than someone else," he said. "Though I have to ask, ladies... Looking out for my friend, you understand... What, exactly, are you both?" |
Osanna grinned. Doesn't beat around the bush, does he? she signed to Naomi, amused. Besides, we could ask the same of him.
Harry watched the flurry of hand motions from Osanna, unable to catch the meaning of any of it. |
"That we could," Naomi said to her friend. She sat up on the edge of the couch and looked back at Thomas. "Fair's fair, then. You tell us, we'll tell you."
Thomas raised an eyebrow. Well, that was the first time he'd been called on it by someone who shouldn't have realized a thing. He glanced at Harry. |
Harry just shook his head. "Don't look at me. They're from a different realm. Not Fae, somewhere else."
Osanna just looked far too innocent. |
"Interesting," Thomas murmured. He looked back at the girls. "Well, like you said, fair is fair. You first."
"That's a rip-off," Naomi muttered under her breath. "Alright, then." She tilted her head, indicating her friend. "Osanna is a quarter fox. I'm half element-based." "I'm a vampire," Thomas replied, offering exactly as much elaboration as Naomi had. Naomi blinked. "You know, a couple days ago I would have thought that was crazy," she said. "Now it just kinda fits." |
Osanna blinked, her expression clearly relaying her "really"? She leaned forward to better examine him, looking at him critically.
Harry just rolled his eyes. "Yes, really. Of a sort." |
Naomi couldn't resist; she tapped Osanna's shoulder to get her attention.
You're looking close enough... is he sparkling? She knew her friend would get the joke, even though she used sign language, just to be on the safe side. No sense in offending the people who were so graciously putting up with them. Thomas raised an eyebrow when he saw Naomi's fingers flashing through a few signs. "What was that?" he asked. "Nothing," Naomi replied quickly. |
Osanna clapped her hands over her mouth, hiding her huge grin and her silent laughter. Though she still looked very amused.
"That doesn't look like nothing," Harry pressed. He had the feeling they were having fun at Thomas's expense, and he wanted in on it, dammit. |
"I'm... not sure it would translate," Naomi said, trying not to laugh as well as she watched her friend. "Joke from back home."
"Try," Thomas replied. He got the feeling they were making fun of him, too, and he wanted to know exactly what the joke was. Naomi bit her lip for a moment, trying to fight back a few snickers. "Does the name Stephanie Meyer mean anything at all to you?" she asked. Thomas rolled his eyes. "Oh come on," he said. "Honestly? That's almost insulting." And it would have been, if he hadn't heard a similar joke once or twice before. |
Osanna just grinned shamelessly. Hey, if they were unwillingly world-hopping, she was going to have fun about it, dammit.
Harry snickered, trying hard to not laugh too much at his brother. Too much. |
Thomas sent his brother a look that clearly said to Shut Up.
Naomi grinned, too, but she at least made a little effort to fight it off. She'd made her one brilliant joke for the trip, and it was time to let it go. She was almost surprised neither of the guys had asked what she meant when she told them what she and Osanna were, though. |
Now that Harry thought about it for a little bit, instead of laughing at his brother, he looked over at the other two. "So, what did you mean?" he asked. "Quarter fox and elemental?"
Osanna sat back, since she couldn't explain. She just went back to studying Thomas. |
Thomas listened for the answer to Harry's question. This was kind of interesting, now that the bad jokes were out of the way.
"Every time I think it might be self-explanatory..." Naomi said. "It's pretty much what it sounds like. Osa is mostly human, though she has one grandparent who happens to be a full-blooded fox-spirit." She wasn't sure if Osanna's grandfather was a Four or a Five, but it didn't matter at the moment. "I'm a little less human than that. My mother is a regular human, and my father is an ice-based elemental demon." |
Harry blinked. "Okay," he managed after a minute. He was still kind of confused, since demons generally equated to bad things in his experience. But he just shrugged it off. "I understand what it means for you, but what about for Osanna?"
Osanna looked at him before she frowned, glancing around the apartment. He didn't have any living plants, but he did have dried plants somewhere. She started looking around for them, looking over at Naomi for help. |
"Osa plays with plants," Naomi replied. She had glanced around as well, but didn't see any sort of living greenery. "I don't think you have anything around here, though..."
|
Osanna managed to find the trap door and look at it meaningfully.
Harry blinked at that, but he pulled it up obligingly. He was curious to see, after all. "How did you know that was there?" he asked, curious. I could feel the plants down there, Osanna signed back, knowing Naomi would translate. Dried plants. I knew there was some way to get down there. |
"Osa could feel dried plants down there," Naomi translated obediently. "She knew there had to be a way down if there were things down there to begin with."
Thomas was actually kind of impressed. He knew Harry didn't exactly advertise the fact that there was a subbasement, and Osanna had found it almost immediately. |
Osanna slipped downstairs and came back up with a dried leaf. She held it in her palm, concentrating hard on it. Slowly, it filled out again, and a small stem grew from the leaf.
Harry watched, his eyes comically wide. He could see so many potential uses for that... |
