The Scientist Name: Dr. Kenneth J. Song-Park Age: 32 Years Old Height: Six Feet Hair Color: Black Eye Color: Hazel About Him: Dr. Kenneth Song-Park is very lonely scientist, and was never much of a social butterfly. His father is from South Korea, while his mother is American. He paid more attention to robotics and technology than he did to what social life he did have. Even when friends invited him to parties, he preferred to work on his robots. One day, he did find a companion that was similar in nature to him. She was a university student, but when she graduated, she moved on to bigger and better things; which caused Dr. Song-Park to be lonely again. So now he decides to build a companion! Character Profile(s)
The Android Given Name: Cinnabar Model Name: Companion Android 57139 "Cinnabar" Apparent Age: Appears to be anywhere from eighteen to twenty-three years old Height: Somewhere from 5'6" to 6'0" Hair Color: Black Eye Color: Bright Red About Him: An android created by Dr. Song-Park. Very little is known about what exactly made him so humanoid--to date, he is one of the most advanced pieces of technology in the world. He doesn't fare well in cold or wet weather, and a hot, dry area would be the best environment for him. Ultra-intelligent academically, but much like a toddler socially. He knows little about the real world, but he does possess the remarkable ability to learn, like a human being. He has a basic programmed understanding of emotions and the like...but it's not yet clear if he is able to express emotions of his own. It was two o'clock, and Dr. Song-Park was reading over his blueprints for his newly built companion, making sure his companion was built to his specifications. It then came to Dr. Song-Park that he couldn't just call his companion by his model name, he even though it was kind of weird to call him, "Companion Android 57139". So Dr. Song-Park had to think of a same for his companion and think of it quickly, because in about three hours from now his companion will awaken.
After thinking about it for a few minutes, Dr. Song-Park said out loud, "I will call you, 'Cinnabar'." Dr. Song-Park quickly added the name to his Companion's memory bank; that way when his companion awakens, he will reply to the name "Cinnabar". He went over the blue prints again to make sure Cinnabar was built to "perfection". After he went over the blue prints, it was time to play the waiting game. The doctor didn't have a companion since his assistant graduated from University, and all his other interns ran away. As for his students at the university, they just tolerate him. Then five o'clock came around, and Dr. Song-Park wondered why Cinnabar hasn't awaken yet. Dr. Song-Park started to sigh and had a slight flash back of the first helper android he built. "Please wake up," Dr. Song-Park said as he was trying to hide his emotions from Cinnabar just in case Cinnabar did wake up, and manged to pick up on the emotions. Dr. Song-Park manage to hide his emotions this time, but then he started thinking about all the fun things he was going to do with Cinnabar. Then... |
Cinnabar was extremely humanoid. Everything about him seemed to look and feel human even when he was in sleeping mode. He was, after all, built to be a companion...and companions were supposed to be human-like in every way. As his creator spoke, the android stirred, eyelids opening slowly. He flexed his faux-muscles as he sat up, placing a hand on the back of his head (where his main brain was).
He looked...tired, surprisingly, like someone who had just woken from a long sleep. The expression on Cinnabar's face was eerily human, and it was a bit disconcerting. "...Mm..." He had a baritonal voice, somewhat deep. Though he appeared to be awake, he was not at full functioning ability yet. He would have to be tested to make sure nothing was wrong with him, and that he was ready to take on and fulfill his job of being his creator's companion. Cinnabar glanced towards Dr. Song-Park, slowly. He, however, didn't say anything. Being in a half-booted state, the only instinct he had was to listen to his creator for orders. |
Dr. Song-Park looked at Cinnabar and noticed he was starting to "wake up". Dr. Song-Park thought he was fully awaken, but then when he didn't hear the phrase, "Huh? Where am I?" He knew then something was wrong. He had to figure out why he wasn't fully booted, and if he had to accept this fact then he had to teach Cinnabar everything that he would a son.
After a few seconds of thinking, Dr. Song-Park realized he would have to fully boot Cinnabar up and run some tests to make sure Cinnabar wouldn't be considered one of his many "failures". Dr. Song-Park attempted a similar project before Cinnabar, that was his first helper android known as "Rusty". Cinnabar is kind of like "Rusty", but more human like in appearance and mannerisms. Dr. Song-Park was considered a joke in the robotics community for making "Rusty", and for believing robots, androids, and machines are just as equal as humans are. That they have "feelings" like humans do. This time, Cinnabar isn't for the scientific community. Cinnabar is only for Dr. Song-Park's companionship. Dr. Song-Park took Cinnabar to the lab and started to run the intelligences/physical test on him. Dr. Song-Park tried to smile at Cinnabar to make sure Cinnabar wouldn't be afraid or frightened. Dr. Song-Park is one of the few scientists that believe that machines have feelings and can pick up on human emotions. "We're almost done, Cinnabar," Dr. Song-Park said as he punched a few keys. ((I hope this post is good enough. If not, I'll make more exciting and better posts next time.)) |
As his creator ran the necessary tests, Cinnabar seemed to perk up more and more. He shook off the deep 'sleep' that he had been in, and he seemed to respond well to the tests once he appeared to be fully 'awake.' It had just taken some time for him to fully awaken.
"I understand," he murmured, in response to Dr. Song-Park's statement about it almost being finished. He was staring fixedly at the wall on the other side of the room, as still as possible while the scientist worked on him. He, after all, didn't want to disturb the other's work. He knew he might get damaged if he tried to move, and he certainly didn't want that. The results of the test, once the android had shaken off his daze, were exemplary. He seemed to be in prime working condition. Now all that was left to do was to...get friendly with each other. This would be a test of how humanoid Cinnabar really was. If he could freely converse and get to know his creator, it was a good sign for the future. |
Dr. Song-Park looked at Cinnabar and smiled at him and said, "How do you feel Cinnabar? Want to watch TV or play a game?"
Dr. Song-Park didn't know what Cinnabar's hobbies would be; he remembered what hobbies his helper android liked though, but that didn't mean Cinnabar would like the same hobbies. Dr. Song-Park had Simon out and some other random game out just in case. He also had a video game console ready if Cinnabar liked to play video games. He then remembered how much his former assistant liked to play Dance Dance Revolution. Dr. Song-Park waited for a reply and wondered what it might be. He was hoping that Cinnabar would suggest something different, or would want to have a conversation. Then again, Dr. Song-Park wanted Cinnabar to be unique and not follow all his commands. Dr. Song-Park was now deep in thought again, which happens from time to time. When Dr. Song-Park is deep in thought, he tends to forget everything that is around him for a second or two. Maybe Cinnabar might have to remind Dr. Song-Park that he is still here. |
Cinnabar took a few long moments to ponder his creator's questions. Once he grew more accustomed to being 'alive,' he would start responding and reacting much more quickly. But for right now, he was just starting to adjust to the world around him and would take a bit of time to settle down into his role.
"...Perhaps we should talk instead?" he suggested, his voice slightly hesitant. He didn't know if suggesting something else would be seen as disrespectful to his 'master,' of sorts. He did know that the person before him, Dr. Song-Park, was his creator, and he knew he was supposed to listen and take heed of his commands and wants. But he didn't know much else about him, other than that. A little back-and-forth conversation sounded appealing to the android. After all, he was just getting used to his voice and wanted to test how well he could speak with Dr. Song-Park. There was a hint of curiosity on his face...just slightly. He was showing emotion, as time passed... Real, human emotion. |
"Very well," Dr. Song-Park replied as he smiled happily. It has been a while since Dr. Song-Park was happy. Ever since his assistant left him, he has been very lonely. Dr. Song-Park decided to ask Cinnabar what he would like to talk about instead of just going into his life story.
"So what would you like to talk about?" Dr. Song-Park asked Cinnabar, "I can either talk about my life, or you can ask me about yourself. Either one is fine." Dr. Song-Park noticed that Cinnabar showed a bit of curiosity on his face. Dr. Song-Park took off his glasses and cleaned them for a second or two. He then decided to tell Cinnabar a tiny bit about himself. "I hadn't had a friend in a long time," Dr. Song-Park said as he sighed, "It's nice to have someone to talk to." Dr. Song-Park just smiled at Cinnabar and was glad to have someone that would kind of understand him. Would this fill the void in Dr. Song-Park's need for companionship? Only time can tell... |
"I would like to get to know you a little bit better. And...perhaps figure out more about myself in the process." Cinnabar folded his hands slightly in his lap. He was already self-aware, and well aware that he was newly 'born.' He didn't even know much about himself, and what he 'liked' and 'disliked.'
He seemed to be interested, immensely, when Dr. Song-Park suddenly drifted off into a bit of his life story, and he leaned forward a little bit in anticipation. The android almost seemed disappointed when the man cut off, and he backed up a little bit. "What topic is a good one to start with? I know little about back-and-forth conversation, and what topics are appropriate to start with," Cinnabar revealed, sitting very still and watching Dr. Song-Park closely with those...ever so slightly intimidating...bright crimson eyes. There was still a hint of curiosity in those features. Apparently, the attempt on the doctor's part to try and incorporate some semblance of human emotion had worked better than expected. ...If he could express human emotion...were there more possibilities? |
"Very well," Dr. Song-Park said as he started go into his life story briefly and then talked about Cinnabar's life story, "I always been interested in Science, especially robotics and artificial intelligence."
Then Dr. Song-Park started talking more about his childhood and his teen years. After a while, he realized Cinnabar would be bored to death, so he let Cinnabar talk for a bit or more. "What about the weather?" Dr. Song-Park said as he remembered the taboos in regular conversation, which two of them were politics and religion. Dr. Song-Park really didn't talk about the last one, but he kind of had a passion for politics. It was only far if he taught Cinnabar the social norms, and tried his hardest for Cinnabar to pass for human. He knew if he could do that much, he would not only be proud but be glad for Cinnabar as well. Dr. Song-Park thought to himself, "What if Cinnabar decides to leave me like everyone else in my life?" |
"...The weather?" Cinnabar suddenly looked a bit confused. All this talk about Dr. Song-Park's past and his interests, and even a bit on how he himself was built...to the weather? The android glanced around the room they were in, taking in all the strange mechanical objects around him.
"...There is certainly no weather inside this room," he stated, obviously. "We're inside, not outside." He fell silent, thinking that was all there was to say about the current weather. There were no windows in his line of sight, so he couldn't comment on the weather outside. Cinnabar folded his hands in his lap absently, closing his eyes for a brief moment while he thought of what else might be good conversation fodder. |
Dr. Song-Park thought about it for a minute; realized Cinnabar was right and then said: "You're right, there isn't any weather in this room. Let alone a window to see it with. Good observation."
Dr. Song-Park decided to continue talking about himself and Cinnabar. Dr. Song-Park realized he couldn't be what he was not with his companion. He tried that with "real" people, and it only worked for so much before he went back to being himself. "So... want to tour your home?" Dr. Song-Park said as he got up from his seat, "I'll also show you, your room as well." Dr. Song-Park got up and stretched, as anyone could tell Dr. Song-Park was tall. He cleaned his glasses as he waited for Cinnabar to get up. |
Cinnabar stood up slowly, unsteady on his legs at first. When he finally steadied himself, he gave his creator a firm nod. "I would like a tour of my home," he decided, seeming interested.
Cinnabar himself was averagely tall. Shorter than Dr. Song-Park, but not as short as the average woman was, for example. He had a light of...curiosity...in his eyes. It was strange how the android seemed to so openly display traces of human emotion. maybe it just looked that way because he...was so human-like in appearance. Yes...that had to be it. Machines, after all...they couldn't feel, right? "I am ready," the android called to Dr. Song-Park, folding his hands neatly in front of him. "Where is my room?" |
"Well as you know we're already in the lab," Dr. Song-Park said as he grabbed his keys, "now we'll go out this door, and up the elevator is the rest of the house."
Dr. Song-Park walked out the door making sure not to leave Cinnabar behind. He put the key into the elevator, and the elevator opened up. Once they got through touring the house, Dr. Song-Park showed Cinnabar his room. Dr. Song-Park handed Cinnabar a set of keys. They keys were the same keys that Dr. Song-Park has, house key, elevator key, mail key, back door key, and the key to the lab. "Well behind this door is your room. It isn't much now; just the few basic things, but you can decorate it how you like and add stuff to your room as time goes by," Dr. Song-Park said as he smiled. "If you would like a key to your room, let me know and I will get you one." Inside Cinnabar's room was a bed, a desk with a laptop, a television, a closet full of clothes that Cinnabar might or might not like, and other basic things. Cinnabar had something that resembled a bathroom in his room, but it was something that was be useful for an Android. Dr. Song-Park right hand started to bother him a bit. There was some indication that Dr. Song-Park was going through some pain, but he hid it pretty well. Dr. Song-Park was thinking that his right hand needed readjusting again. It's hard to work on your own hand, and it better if someone else works on it. Unfortunately, the person that used to help him has moved on to bigger and better things. Then he had an idea, "What if I get Cinnabar to help me. No wait, this might frighten him." Dr. Song-Park was thinking of a lot of things right now. He didn't want to abandon Cinnabar while he goes to the lab to fix his hand. |
Cinnabar was quiet while Dr. Song-Park ushered him into the elevator, and he watched his creator work the machine with curiosity in his expression yet again. If he was displaying humanoid emotions already...well, there was a possibility that they could be developed even further into fully functional emotions.
He was much more talkative as they toured the house and marveled at the refrigerator in the kitchen, asking what its purpose was and why it was so cold. He could feel hotness and coolness already--he was awakening to some of the more fine-tuned senses that had been programmed into him. When the pair finally reached the room meant for Cinnabar, he peeked inside in an almost childlike manner before stepping inside, his eyes trying to take in everything at once. "I would like a key to this room, if it isn't too much trouble. Just in case." The android made his way around the room slowly, painstakingly, and made sure to take in every little detail. As he did so, it was much easier to see that he wasn't human, because everything he did was perfectly analytical, as he was trying to get used to his surroundings. His hands, though, worked delicately whenever he picked something up or touched it to examine it. As he was examining the things inside his new room, he noticed that Dr. Song-Park appeared to be in a state of pain. Carefully setting down the laptop, which he had been turning around delicately in his hands just moments before, he turned towards his creator. "Is something bothering you?" he asked, rather blatantly. |
Dr. Song-Park looked at Cinnabar and knew he couldn't hide his secret from his own creation/companion. So he decided to use this time to tell him. He hopes that Cinnabar doesn't "overload".
"Yes, my right hand is giving me trouble," Dr. Song-Park said as he winched in pain, "you see Cinnabar, I am not like other humans... what sets me a part from them is the fact of my right hand." Dr. Song-Park couldn't take the pain anymore and he knew he had to undo the latches of his right hand from his arm. Dr. Song-Park rolled up the shirt sleeve on his right arm. Then he unwrapped the skin covering to undo the latches on his right hand. That is when he took off his right hand. He flipped the hand over, noticed the wires and the sparks coming from the wires. "Oh... some wires got fired," Dr. Song-Park said to himself as he looked at his right hand, "no wonder I was in pain." Dr. Song-Park realized that Cinnabar might be puzzled/confused about this, so he said to Cinnabar, "I am just like you in a way. Even though I am still human, this hand makes me less human to some people... If you like I can tell you the story." |
Cinnabar seemed puzzled beyond belief when Dr. Song-Park started removing his hand...a removable appendage? Such a thing seemed fantastical to him, like it couldn't be real. The sparking of the wires seemed to startle Cinnabar, who took a step backwards and studied the now-detached hand uncertainly.
"...Oh." The android blinked a few times, quite possibly just trying to get a good grasp on what was going on. "I see. Do you need that appendage tuned? With the correct programs in my database, I'm sure I could do so for you. I would not mind hearing the whole story," he added, glancing down. He seemed...nervous, maybe? "After all...if we are going to be living together, we might as well share everything with each other. Trust...it's important, is it not?" Trust...such a human-like thing to talk about... |
"That will work," Dr. Song-Park said as he lightly smiled and still was in pain, "We can go back to the lab to fix this. I have the tools there."
Dr. Song-Park had a flash back on what happened to him during his youth. Then he snapped out of it. He heard what Cinnabar said and was surprised he then smiled and agreed. "You're right, Cinnabar," Dr. Song-Park replied, "trust is important. I'll tell you the story." So Dr. Song-Park went on to tell Cinnabar the story... One random spring day changed Dr. Song-Park's (Kenneth's) life forever at the age of nine. He was outside riding his scooter, then a group of bullies decided to do something horrible and that was to change Kenneth's glasses. Kenneth left his glasses on the park bench for a minute to rub his eyes, while doing that the bullies changed his glasses to a fake pair. Kenneth didn't notice that his glasses weren't the real deal and put them on. The bullies laughed as he bumped into things, tripped over twigs and logs. Kenneth noticed his glasses weren't "working" and realized his glasses weren't real. That is when he sighed and tried to ride his scooter home. His bullies followed him just for laughs. Kenneth could barely see a road sign. One of the bullies suggested this was no longer any fun, but the rest of the gang ignored that one bully. The last thing Kenneth remembered was waking up in a hospital room to his mother crying and his father trying to be strong. One of the bullies by the name of Jim was in the room in tears as well. Kenneth had his real glasses on and looked at his right hand. His right hand was gone. The doctor told Kenneth in a way a kid could understand that the doctors tried everything to save his right hand. "Since then I had this cybernetic right hand or something similar to it," Dr. Song-Park said as he still felt the pain from that day, "Since that incident, I grew afraid of people. Even Jim; well one of the bullies that were there that was the 'nice' one tried to be my friend, but I couldn't trust him. Even if he was more of a bystander instead of a bully, he still could of walked away. Although I do talk to him once in a while to be kind. Other than that, I don't trust him." |
