Prog Rock

I've recently gotten into prog rock, and oh my god where has this stuff been for my entire life.

Anyone else here a big prog-head? I'd really like to know since I'm a huge newbie at this genre. I'm more or less guilty of only listening to the entry level stuff; eg, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, & Rush, so any recommendation would make me really happy. :"3

Coheed & Cambria is a pretty good prog rock/prog metal band, though it's less progressive on some tracks than others. Especially the last two albums, which are very pop-ish, and the first two albums, which have a distinctly emo/alt metal sound to them. Claudio's voice is very...unique, so your mileage may vary.

Prooooooooog, yes.

Might want to try a lot across time here, see what you like. My favorites are...

The Moody Blues
Kansas
Genesis
Aghora (Actually that's more Jazz/Metal, but the bands with heavy Jazz influences have always been labeled as a type of prog)
Cynic
Gordian Knot

Isis
Ghost Brigade
Giant Squid
Mastodon

These tend to be more prog metal but they're incredible none the less.

Mastodon is pretty awesome, especially the Leviathan album.

Ah yesss, Coheed. I listened to them quite a bit a few years ago, but not because of the prog influences, haha; back then I was more into that emo/alt metal stuff.

@ Project Wolfie: Oh cool, I actually have some Cynic and Genesis on my ipod, and a lot of the tracks were from my boyfriend's brother who listens to prog. I'm definitely gonna check out Aghora because I like a lot of jazz influenced prog tracks.

@ Vix: Oh no, I think you're gonna turn this into a Mastodon thread. But I have been listening to a hell lot of Leviathan lately when I go to and from work. SHIT GETS ME PUMPED

Blood & Thunder does things to me that a normal man can't <3

Gonna bump this, with some two bands I just found out about. Transatlantic and Spock's Beard. It's sorta like classic prog, today. Especially with Transatlantic, they sound like Yes or Kansas, but new. :D

Modern day- classic prog? Aww yeah gimme dat

Explodey 10-14-2011 06:20 PM

Daevid Allen's Gong.
also, Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt does a lot of prog side projects; I know he's played with Porcupine Tree.
Fireballet,
Harmonium,
Aragon,
Van der Graaf Generator,
Hatfield & the North,
Refugee,
and Todd Rundgren spring to mind.
