Gaia Online and Menewsha

Okay, so I just want to know you're opinions guys, about GO and Mene. Have you ever been part of GO? What can you say about it? Likes on GO? Dislikes?

Maybe this is just another thread comparing the two sites. (Sorry, I just want to make my own.)
I've been a Gaian until now but I'm more active here in Mene because the community here is much friendlier and more relevant than GO's.

It's much easier earning gold on GO especially when posting in forums even you only posted a few words or sentences--like rants or something that don't make sense-- not like in Mene (but it's okay with me, I don't complain, it is just what I've noticed here, don't get mad on me ). But if I'm gonna discuss or find something interesting, I'd look for that here in Mene. Users and even mods listen to you. Heheheh

I'm going to move this over to Community Sites Discussion. :)

----------

I will be speaking all of this from a user's point of view, and my thoughts from before I became a moderator on Mene. :)

Many users on Menewsha are former Gaia members. I also know that some still do log into Gaia actively. I still log in myself, sometimes, but mostly to check up on a few friends I know.

I myself used to be a Gaia member. I joined that place around '04-'05 and stuck around for a few years until they started overwhelming the cash shop with items and the quality of their monthlies received a drastic drop. Partly what I liked about Gaia was the freedom to post (I used to be a bumper for hire for a while, helping a friend's shop) but I eventually grew tired of it and stuck to a few guilds, one which was a rather large and organized art guild. But of course, even for that, I had my art stolen. >_>

Anyway, it was during an art scamming incident (during that time I was already half on Zantarni and weary of Gaia) that I gave up trying to gain anything good from Gaia.

When I first got active to Menewsha, there was a current ongoing drama which totally discouraged me from posting anywhere beyond the Art Shops and Quests forums. If not for the great people I've met during my first event here (sadly, they are all inactive now), I might not have ever braved myself to venture past my hide holes. I am very grateful for this community and the users here. Even during unfavourable times, Mene is still very much like a second home to me.

Compared to those times, earning gold here now is actually much, MUCH easier. I remember spending just a week of posting back then to earn about 300g.

I struggle to remember what I liked about Gaia now, which is kind of sad as it was that site that introduced me to avatar sites. I belong to a few guilds on there and those where the only places I even posted, apart from a couple of quest threads. I got badly burned when I posted a perfectly harmless reply to a girl's question in one fo the forums. Got flamed by some brat, I never made that mistake again.

I used to bump threads, that horrifies me now  But it's what you get used to at the time, isn't it? Someone made bumps for me xD Let me see if they're lurking in the depths of my photobucket...haha, here we go xD

I enjoyed fishing and playing slots, though I'd always lock myself in a room of my own. I also liked running around the uninhabited blocks in towns, catching bugs and collecting trash and flowers. But many aspects of Gaia were too noob/troll-filled for me to want to go near them, and as time went on, too broken for me to be able to use. Like the homes arena that was broken for about 18 months, and certain house items that are still broken, I believe. I got into setting up a creepy lab for one of my avatars, with shelves full of eyeballs and severed heads, blood on the walls and a glowing totem in the corner that she gave gifts too. But I put a nitemare sarcofagus in there and it broke everything, and it is still broken a couple of years later, because they canned the guy who worked on homes, or something.

I get that our gold earning is a shock to the system for people used to being able to post an emote and get 75 gold for it  But it's done this way to discourage spam and encourage conversation, and it works  It used to get me mad on Gaia that I'd run out of gold-earning before I'd done everything that I wanted to do on my main account. I'd be down to getting just 1 or 2 gold for posts and still not be caught up everywhere, so I'd have to switch to my main mule to finish replying in various guilds and still get some gold for it. I vastly prefer our system, as there's no cut off for gold earning like there is on Gaia.

I enjoyed zOMG til it got to the stage where I couldn't continue alone and was basically forced to join a crew to get past certain bosses. Usually at that point I'd just start again with a different account, and try out different rings. I particularly enjoy the ring that rains fire, I'd go back to an earlier level, let a bunch of critters surround me, then fry the lot of them

Gaia and Mene are totally different beasts, that's really all there is to it. We cater to different needs. Sometimes those needs are different aspects of the same person, like you've mentioned Maroon. Often enough it's more of a personal preference. I prefer Mene because I'm not into the overall mentality of Gaia's forums. I don't judge the people who love Gaia, I'm glad that it's there for them and they get enjoyment from it, but it's not for me any more. I honestly think it's too big for me. I really like that on here you can get to know a large amount of the userbase, and not feel like you're completely alone even when surrounded by thousands of people.

I admit, I have only dabbled in Gaia and don't have an account there. I found the GD to be frightening, with posts of porn and pedophilia. I did like a few of their games, but found that site to be overwhelming. I also really was not a fan of their avatars. To me they looked very pixely. (Is pixely a word?) The aquarium made no sense to me. Why would you want a pixel fish on an avatar site?

I like it here. I like that Menewsha encourages people to be more literate rather than less (so you earn more gold). I find the quality of posts are better than what I saw there. I also think the avatars are way better looking on Menewsha along with the items we get for them.

I used to be on Gaia a lot when it first came out. I haven't logged in in like a year, if not even more. There's just too much spam and too many immature posts for my liking. I mean, you can't even have a conversation with someone over there half the time. If they forums weren't so bad then I would still be logging on and posting.

I used to be a die hard Gaian. I'd put all my allowance towards Gaia Cash to get a monthly collectable or two a month. I would go on there every single day for at least 3 hours (which in the past year or so has grown to about 8 or so hours [kinda happens when you have literally nothing to do and you're on disability] which was fine with me). I would go on the GD for the randomness. I applied to be a mod, but they wouldn't accept my application even though I followed the rules, reported the reportable, and was dedicated to Gaia. They threw out my application for a stupid reason which wasn't true (they said I flamed people when I didn't).

Gaia has become so cash hungry, and their new Alchemy system is a joke. It hyper inflates the Marketplace (a flower that would sell for 1 gold is now selling for 500-1k, tires were about 10 gold, now they're over 800), and causes old unavailable items that were expensive to begin with (10 thousands of gold to 100 thousands of gold) now are facing extinction. One of the mods involved in the project said that 'Only hardcore users will use it'. This pissed off a huge faction of the people who were trying to use it. Alchemy is only for those who spend hours/days on zOMG. I've spent over $2400 on the website, spent hours a day on it, white-knighting it, and promoting it. They want you to buy (with real cash) ingredients for the recipe, and/or items that require lots of gold that come from previous RIGs.

zOMG is still glitched as ever, yet they keep rolling out new and "improved" features. I'm at 82/20 anchor bugs and I have quite a few silent NPC's which mess up the Alchemy part of zOMG. They also made it impossible to do on your own (I'm severely anti-social when it comes to MMO's n MMORPG's)

You said that right. I've noticed that most of their site announcements is all about the cash shop update, Gaia Cash, etc. :( Always discussing about Gaia Cash.

Hahahahaha. "Pixely":D :XD
Mene's avatars are prettier than Gaia's.

I have to agree with you with the quality of the posts Menewsha has.

Urgh! Anchor bugs! Those fuckers! I've been gang-raped by those a few times :illgetu: I too hate being forced to join up with other people to get past certain areas/complete certain tasks. Which is why I stopped playing zOMG to be honest.

I'm amused that Daria thinks Gaia's items are too "pixelly" as they're not pixelled but tool-shaded, which is smoother as it uses say 100 shades of a colour instead of 4-6. But I get what you mean, a lot of their work just isn't very good. It lacks depth, so it has that rough look about it. At least it doesn't make you squint like Ernya's stuff does :XD

I like the idea of the aquarium, but not the execution :( The bootygrab side of things murdered their economy (again) but the cost of the fish is just totally rediculous. I really liked the little turtle, but they were 80k :gonk:

I really do understand that a site needs its users to spend money, with our financial situation how could I not? But the massive frustration of really not being able to aquire anything that I liked because it all cost way too much was more than I could tolerate :(

Hahaha, I love that bump sign, jellysundae, it's so retro! :XD

I love Gaia and I probably always will. I almost had a panic attack because I was so excited about their latest item update that was "The Walking Dead" themed. I spend way too much money over there, it's really embarrassing. Menewsha avatars are so much prettier and the community is much, MUCH nicer. Both sites satisfy different things for me. Gaia has that big city charm that I love with a higher population and way more items. Menewsha is my vacation home where the air is cleaner and everything is more laid back. I feel like I haven't gotten as much out of Menewsha as I should have because I've never been super active during an event. That's going to change with the Halloween event! It's my goal!
