What is your favorite holiday?

The Autumn chill will be soon moving in by where I live in Central Wisconsin. I love this time of year because it all seems to start with my birthday (today!) and then just rolls like a barrel downhill through most of the year's holidays.

I am particularly fond of Thanksgiving. Although I have a lot of anxiety when I think back on holidays with my now disbanded and always dysfunctional family, we had a lot of great traditions surrounding some of them.

For Thanksgiving, we'd break out the fancy Christmas plates and lace tablecloths and I'd always get to set the table. Some years near the end (before the divorce, I mean) my mom made this amazing cornucopia out of bread and had it stuffed with nuts and fruits as a centerpiece.

I was wondering what holidays the other Menewshans enjoy and why so? Do you have any traditions you'd be willing to share?

Aww. Your Thanksgiving sounds so lovely. > w<

New Years Eve/Day is my favorite holiday and has been for a while. I'm not really sure why as I've never done anything extravagant for it. I suppose I like the feeling of the stress of the former holidays passing and the sheer celebration of lasting through another year.

I dream of one day doing something worthwhile for this holiday though!

New Years Eve used to be an anual babysitting night for me. My parents would go out and I'd have two watch my two younger siblings. We'd get snacks and get to stay up late but it never really felt like a holiday for me.

When I got older, a pagan friend had me involved in some rituals with him on New Year's Eve where we write down something that we want to get out of our lives and then light the paper on fire at midnight. I think that was a pretty feel-good tradition. Perhaps I should try that again this year?

Halloween is without a doubt my favorite holiday! You get to be creative and create a fun costume (or buy one), there is free candy and I love the creepy side of life!

Mine would be both Christmas and New Year's Eve.
It's mostly family bonding.
I enjoy the food mom makes and the desserts.
We exchange presents sometimes too.
And sometimes I get to have sleepover parties with my friends at our house.
:'D

Pa-chinko 10-11-2011 12:39 PM

Thai New Year.
We throw water at random people and eat lots. XD

Pa-chinko:

What does the "throwing water at random people" symbolize for?
It sounds fun! :0

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 10-11-2011 02:36 PM

@Kasu: Aww yes, you should. c: I did something similar, except it was writing wishes for the new year and lighting that.

@Pa & BC: Cleansing? :s

B A B Y C O C K 10-11-2011 02:48 PM

Cleansing? Seriously? O.O"

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 10-11-2011 02:49 PM

It's a guess on my part. XDD

B A B Y C O C K 10-11-2011 02:51 PM

I had no idea. Haha.
I thought it was like for fun. xD

Kole_Locke 10-11-2011 03:48 PM

I have to say, I like Halloween the best because of its gothic picturesque time that it is set in-- and the paranormal and supernatural really interest me and plus it is a time to really be free and have a great time with lots of candy, friends, movies, and a time to practice witchcraft lol --- hehehe if you're a witch that is hehheheheh Boil boil toil and trouble heheheh making mushrooom witches brew I am hehheheehheehhehehehe!

Kasumi Ocada 10-11-2011 08:39 PM

Thai new year sounds fun!

It reminds me of a Japanese tradition I read about, where they throw beans out windows and doorways and say, "Bad spirits get out! Happiness come in!"

-The Half-Blood Princess- 10-11-2011 11:11 PM

Halloween is my favorite, since it has so much to do with the supernatural.

I also like getting to come up with and wear a costume for one night of the year, even though the actual trick-or-treating is kind of boring to me now, seeing as how I'm seventeen... I have friends that always make me go along, though, and it's worth it for the costumes. xD

I think it also has something to do with the season and the particular atmosphere that autumn evokes, if that makes any sense.

Halloween is the best. Monsters, candy, parties, drinking yourself silly, and scaring the shit out of children, what's not to love? My birthday is also five days before it and I always wind up going to at least once concert in the few weeks leading up to it.

ghostlyaura 10-12-2011 07:23 AM

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday since childhood and it will always be my favorite holiday. I just love everything about it and I always have. I like to dress up and to have parties for it too when I can. I LOVE to decorate my home for Halloween too. I also love the Halloween food and not just the candy but cider and baked good and to cook pumpkins too.

Yeah it's cleansing. xD Some of us get powdered too.
India has a very similar thing called Holi but they use many coloured powder. xD

Pa-chinko

Oooooh awesome!
That'd be totally rad if you look like a rainbow-colored unicorn
with all the different colors of powders. xD

I completely understand - there's kind of a magical feeling to Autumn with me, too.

When I was a kid, Halloween was my favorite holiday. After I had my first kid family became very important to me so Thanksgiving took over. It's all a part of the feeling of Autumn, though.

chronic_heartbreak14 10-12-2011 10:00 PM

is William Shatner's birthday a holiday? lol i celebrate that, and 6 days later i celebrate Leonard Nimoy's!

I really enjoy Christmas because its one of the days of the year I go to church and its not too awkward. And of course Halloween because I get candy >:)

Lenora 10-12-2011 10:20 PM

Halloween is my birthday, so I feel obligated to vote for it.

But if it came down to only the holiday, it would be Christmas.

Rosasharn 10-12-2011 10:24 PM

I'll have to say Christmas. Halloween is cool and everything, but I'm not too fond of our neighborhood's GIANT crowds of people all in the street all night.

Draciolus 10-12-2011 11:10 PM

I say Christmas because of all the good food, and cookies and such my family makes. And all the time I get to spend with my family...though again this year I'm going to be working throughout the holiday season like crazy, only getting Christmas day off...oh joy.:sarcasm:

King Usbeorn 10-14-2011 05:41 PM

I like Christmas the most. Just because people always seem more friendly when you mention it. Our family reunion happens during this time so I get to see all my old and young folks that I haven't seen in a while. Then we have snowball fights and I get to kill frosty the snowman I'll have made. (:<

[nerd] 10-14-2011 05:48 PM

I love halloween parties and dressing up. Too bad im too old to go trick or treating or id do that too.
