No power...what to do?

So I've been without power for over 24 hours now... I can get online every now and then when I charge my phone in my car, but only briefly. Got me thinking, what does everyone else do when they don't have power?? I usually read by candle-light or play my DSi until the battery dies (which it already did...awesome). I live by myself, so I can't play cards with my parents (which I used to do when we would lose power when I was young). Any suggestions? Or just share what your favorite thing to do when you lose power is. And cross your fingers for me that mine will come back on soon so I can have heat again...please :-)

Well, if you want a card game, there's always Solitaire! You could also write or draw. You could also tend to any housework that doesn't require power (dusting, sweeping, mopping, reorganizing your sock drawer). During the day you could call friends and family for a chat or go somewhere else (assuming you're not snowed in).

When I burn through books/video games/laptop time, I just sleep. It makes time go by faster if you can't go out anywhere.

Saisei 10-31-2011 12:22 PM

As soon as the power goes out, I usually shut off my laptop because I never know when I'm going to need that battery to power something else. :)

After that, I read. Yesterday, I read all of Fight Club and got a fair way into The Vampire Lestat (a re-read, but I didn't want anything more complicated, since it was late).

I usually read or daydream. I'm a big daydreamer so I can amuse myself for a huge amount of hours.

You could go for a walk? Draw, paint, write, read, relax, sleep, or something else. The options are endless! :D

can you go to the library when it gets darkish?
and bring home some books to read when it is light out.
doing chores you put off when you have internet to occupy your time is a really good idea.
like reorganizing your closet or pantry is a great idea.
start a scrapbook and organize all your photos.
make an emergency kit for situations just like this.
it's a really good time to do it because you know what your are needing to get by.
or go stay with friends or family that has power.
hummy's going to keep you in her prayers because she feels your pain!
stay warm and good luck sweetie!

I just read or play solitaire/pyramid with cards. When my hubby's home and the power's out we play Scrabble but he always wins :(

don't have a generator? that is a must for power failure risk areas. other than that, i usually play my PSP 3000 which has a car charger and my car has a great battery.

Watery Star 11-01-2011 09:12 AM

Hope you get it back soon.
I went to help out with a haunted trail this weekend and we lost power on top of having to cancel the trail because of the snow. I kept the kids entertained with my PSP and DS. Was going to play some games myself but I can handle boredom better then them heh. Got power in time for dinner though.

Anyway besides hand-held games, I. . .
Go outside and walk around or just relax.
Sleep, alot.
Draw outside.
Meditate.
Contemplate varies things.
Play with the pets.
Exercise.

It's been a while since I've lost power for a significant period of time at my place, it happens more when I'm elsewhere.

I don't have this capability anymore but when I lived in WI if the power would go out due to a storm a buddy and i would unplug our UPS systems (4 total) and bring them over to his house. After we were both at his house we would initiate mission "Rainy Day". We would plug in the UPS systems one by one into his MAME machine until each dies, giving us hours of arcade fun. We also plugged in a "boom box" for some tunes. If the power was still out when we were done gaming we just left and had fun in any way we could. Getting a bunch of others for snowball fights, making snowmen, playing at the park in the rain, etc.

When I was without power after the big earthquake six months ago, I spent the time doing chores (boring, but necessary) and then sat down and started reading Harry Potter again from book one. That definitely killed plenty of time. XD But thankfully my power came on not too long afterward anyways.

When I was younger, I'd play card games or sardines (think reverse hide-and-go-seek where one person hides and everyone seeks), but that does require other people. I guess I'd use the time to study or write if I wanted to be productive.

i hope your power is back on by now sweetie.
but if not, how about painting your fingernails and toenails?

Codette 11-01-2011 04:31 PM

I usually give myself a make over by candle light. Facials, painting nails, shaping eyebrows, etc.
Then I usually read, or if my laptop was working play on that... now I have my itouch ^.^
Play with my dogs, eat and then nap.... wow.... I'm so boring when theres no power....

Cemetery 11-01-2011 06:20 PM

I'm either sleeping or just going out for a walk, Our power outages are never long. Thankfully.

Ride Sally Ride 11-01-2011 06:28 PM

I'm sorry to hear about that... I hate losing power. :\

Usually, I either sleep, listen to music, or draw. I also like writing stories, poems, etc. and taking a walk around town.

Mystic 11-01-2011 10:28 PM

I had no power for weeks because I could not afford to pay electric bill last year. I was unemployed. I just moved everything into my parents house as far as my reptiles went and used my car or the public library to charge my computer and phone.

fairywaif 11-01-2011 10:36 PM

I tend to read with a flashlight/penlight. Or I talk with my sister and Mom. Um... I really can't remember what else I would do. Oh, or play on my Gameboy/DS.

zigbigadorlube 11-02-2011 01:28 AM

I usually play my DS until it dies or read by candlelight. I guess that's about it really... Someone mentioned solitaire which is a good idea. Maybe try a bit of sketching? Even if you aren't very artistic it can pass the time. If you wanted to stay warm you could always do things like situps and crunches. A little exercise can never hurt!

Cat Eye 11-02-2011 02:14 AM

Cry.

Then call people in our twin city and see if they have power. If they do, guess where I'm going? That's right. To my aunt's over there. Usually if power goes out in one town, the other still has it. And sometimes half my town won't have power, but the other will...and it's always my side that goes out.

So yeah, that's what I do lol

Projectwolfie 11-02-2011 01:52 PM

Read a book and listen to Jazz on a battery powered CD player in the candlelight.

Powerless never felt classier.

ToriKat 11-03-2011 01:35 AM

I will most likely read or draw if it's daytime. Once it gets dark, I always go to sleep, no matter what the time. I'm hopeless without electricity! ^^;;

Sally Sinema 11-03-2011 05:21 AM

I read by my battery powered book light or by candlelight.

KidK Mirai 11-03-2011 01:36 PM

When I don't have power I usually crochet by flashlightlight until I get a headache. Then I fire up the laptop for a little while to write a story or something. The last time I lost power I spent the time filling out an in-character survey on the laptop, and chatting on my cell until it was almost out of batteries.

d2hiriyuu 11-04-2011 09:23 AM

if during the day time, play with legos, if at night, go to bed

also cooking when their is no power is fun

Cora 11-04-2011 02:12 PM

Power goes out, Cora pulls out her kindle until the battery dies, then she raids her bookself.
