That's why I fight alone. I throw spells around, willy nilly. When the game assigns followers for certain quests, I feel restricted. I need backup, I just use an atronarch.

...

So, has everyone played the previous games? I gotta admit, that is my first Elder Scrolls title. I gave in to the hype. [sweat]

But i've been reading the lore and backstories on the ES wiki, and I never realized how in depth the world is. It's kinda fascinating. When I finish with Skyrim, I may pick up Oblivion.

Crimson Fang 04-14-2014 08:50 AM

Yeah, they annoy me a lot too. It was during one of the missions where you need to siege a castle that I decided to give swordplay a go.

Yeah, I have also played Morrowind and Oblivion. Morrowind was the one which started my love for Elder Scrolls. Although it is insanely frustrating at times when your skill level is low. Got sick of my attacks missing, or my spells failing to cast. Oblivion is quite an enjoyable game. I found some of the quests in it to be so entertaining. :) Thinking more about the side and guild quests.

Captain Howdy 04-15-2014 05:03 AM

My natural inclination would be to pick up a GOTY edition, but reviews for the PS3 version says there's a rather irritating glitch that can hinder your progress. D:

Crimson Fang 04-15-2014 08:56 AM

Really? What is the glitch? As I have the anniversary edition which essentially includes the GOTY play disc. Haven't really played it on PS3. As I used to play Elder Scrolls on PC.

Captain Howdy 04-15-2014 11:07 PM

If I remember correctly, I believe it's during a quest called 'Vampire Cure', where you have to gather ingredients for someone. But the option to give them one of the items disappears if the Shivering Isles DLC has been downloaded. So you can't finish the quest and you're stuck as a vampire.

The glitch has been fixed for the PC and Xbox, but still exists for the PS3.

ElysiumFate 04-16-2014 05:20 AM

I have only played Skyrim. I am a bit of a graphics snob, I admit. I do intend to pick up Oblivion next time it's on a Steam sale, but I will probably never go farther back than that.

I typically favour a combination of conjuration and destruction as a result. The ease I referred to is how I can effectively reach a point where I am taking minimal part in the fighting. Just walk through the dungeon following the trail of bodies left by my summons. Every now and then hitting one with a fire spell. :P

As for the armour side of things, you are quite right. I quite like it though. So make no attempts to fortify myself. I find the idea of being super powerful in offense, but made of glass in defense to be quite interesting. While I can comfortably make it through the game, if I am caught off guard by an ambush then it doesn't go well for me. Can make the game more exciting.

Ahh, yes, I actually play that way sometimes as a fighter. I adore Marcurio (a freakishly overpowered mage from Riften). I'll let him go in before me and absolutely slaughter everything with his lightning spells. Every once in awhile I'll poke an enemy to kill it, but usually he does all the work for me.

It is an interesting dichotomy. I've always liked the concept of an all powerful mage with no armor, too, but I just stink at playing as one. My current character is working on becoming a powerful mage but she also is leveling heavy armor so that even if something does come after her it won't do any damage.

Crimson Fang 04-16-2014 07:57 AM

Yeah, although I am not going to lie, at times it can be so incredibly frustrating. Especially as I was putting all my points into Magicka for a long time. I am someone who typically tries to avoid swearing. To the point where a co-worker once got so excited when she thought she heard me swear. Well my flatmate heard plenty of it from all my deaths. The worst was the time I cleverly dodged a weak attack...right over the edge of a cliff to my death. (U.U) I also learned to hate Sabre Cats with a passion. They took me by surprise so many times. Especially the snow version.

Captain Howdy 04-17-2014 01:14 AM

@ElysiumFate ~ If you have the patience, you could watch a play through on Youtube. I was thinking of maybe doing that with the older games.

...

I was shocked, but amused, the first time I was launched into the air by a giant. [lol] Thankfully i've reached the point when I can stand up to them.

ElysiumFate 04-17-2014 03:02 AM

Oh goodness, Skyrim has made me swear up a storm. I cannot count how many times I've fallen off a cliff on a freaking horse and either died, or had the horse die. That makes me so angry. XP That or when the dragons somehow get you in their jaws. I still can't survive that with how high a level some of my characters are.

On a side note, is anyone going to give Elder Scrolls Online a try? I don't intend to.

@Captain: Oof, the Elder Scroll games are so long I don't know if I could hack a playthrough of one of them. I actually started watching an Oblivion playthrough but have decided I actually want to play it so I stopped. Honestly, I'd probably rather just read a summary of the major storyline and such in the games older than Oblivion.

Ah, yeah I remember coming across that in the PC version. It was quite stressful. So they go ahead and fix it...once I have moved to another gaming platform. Win! Will have to be careful to avoid becoming a vampire then. As that would really, ahem, suck. :P

Yeah, it is easy enough to swear at games like Skyrim. The worst is when you realize no saves have happened for several hours. Or even powercuts. Although I have only ever had a powercut once while gaming. With a different game though.

Nah, I don't think I will be giving ESO a shot. I am just going to wait for the next proper Elder Scrolls game. While I want online multiplayer for Elder Scrolls, I would rather have the join and drop out of other people's single player games. That would totally excite me!

I am not so much a fan of watching people's playthroughs either. Although I did enjoy one a while ago. I found her narrating to be quite amusing. Can't remember the video though.

I play it and I enjoy it. I'm a fan of MMOs and wanted a 'multiplayer Skyrim' and though it doesn't have the same intense feeling of the other Elder Scroll games, I still enjoy it quite a bit.

ElysiumFate 04-17-2014 10:33 PM

@Crimson: I have become downright obsessive about quicksaving on Skyrim. At some point I died in the middle of a humongous dwarven dungeon and had to replay an hour of that dungeon. XP I learned my lesson.

YES, I would love a multiplayer version of Skyrim where you could just invite a few friends into your game. I do not enjoy MMOs, but having a few friends be able to join my game would be perfect.

I don't have an Xbox or Playstation so I do watch some playthroughs, but I could never hack a playthrough as long as an Elder Scrolls one would be. I watched a playthrough of Infamous Second Son a couple of weeks ago and that was fun even though I wish I could have played it myself.

@ISOS: ESO does look gorgeous. I am having trouble resisting it but I have such an extreme distaste for MMOS I don't think it'll draw me in. I hope it's a good enough game to not stain the Elder Scrolls franchise.

Crimson Fang 04-18-2014 05:37 AM

Has anyone else noticed that when you play as an Argonian they seem to be out of breath when you leave water? Playing as one for the first time in my current play through of Skyrim and it really stands out to me. Especially as I am breathing underwater. (o.o)

Yeah, on the PC versions I used to downright abuse the quick save button. Unfortunately the same function is not in the PS3 version. I can also be quite lazy when it comes to opening a menu to save my game. I do save on a somewhat regular basis though. Either when I think things are about to blow up, or when it has been roughly 30min to an hour since I last saved.

Haha, I only watched them do a 15-20min dungeon. Importantly one which I had just recently completed myself. I don't like spoilers. xD

At least I won't boast about how much fun I had playing Second Son. That would be mean and I am a nice person. :)

I am also finding some temptation. Although more for the extra stuff that come with a limited edition of it. :P

ElysiumFate 04-18-2014 06:19 AM

I've only played one each of the human races so I wouldn't know. XP

Yeah, I mostly save when I think things are going to blow up. I'll also save multiple times during a difficult battle so that if I die I don't have to do the whole thing over again. I also hoard health potions so that I can take them instead of dying.

Haha, thank you. For the most part I don't regret not having a console, but when I miss out on games like Second Son it hurts.

Mostly if I'm watching playthroughs it's because I seriously don't want to play the game. For example, I've watched a lot of a Dark Souls 2 playthrough because that game would give me a stress ulcer if I actually played it.

ISOS Duke 04-18-2014 11:14 AM

I should ask my friend who plays an Argonian about that >.>

@Fate: If you aren't an MMO person I wouldn't recommend it. They allow you to explore in the game, but there's no sense of surprise or 'ransack looting' of places. They do have boxes and such that you can loot everywhere, but you don't get to strip a place clean and you tend to only get little items out of it.

I would say that ESO does a good job in complimenting what it can in both aspects of an MMO and Elder Scrolls game while trying to keep the feel of both. It doesn't feel like another MMO I've played which is a relief.

Captain Howdy 04-18-2014 09:50 PM

Even for non-Argonian races, I thought it was strange that your character would be out of breath even when using a waterbreathing spell or enchanted item.

I'm on the PS3, and I try to save as often as I can. There have been a few times when my game has frozen on me and I had to reset that shiz. [gonk]

ElysiumFate 04-19-2014 12:45 AM

@ISOS: I'll take your advice on that. I don't like the fact that you can't solo things on MMOs. Being able to play with others is nice, but when it comes down to it I want to be able to kill bosses on my own and such.

@Howdy: I hope you didn't lose too much gamplay. XP

Captain Howdy 04-19-2014 09:47 AM

@ElysiumFate ~ You and me are the same way. I'm very much a solo player. I like to do things in games at my own pace and in my own time.

... Not too much. Did have to repeat a certain one time.

I never actually noticed that. Which is quite shocking as I do tend to usually use water breathing spells a lot.

Yeah, I have had mine freeze as well. Causes my heart to skip a beat whenever I fast travel and have not saved for a while. As it tends to slightly lag initially which makes me panic thinking it is going to freeze.

Oh, wow, the only human race I have played as is Breton. I usually prefer to play as a High Elf. Although my first play through of Morrowind was as a Dark Elf.

I also save a lot when I am trying to pickpocket or pick locks. Since I can be terrible at both. My pickpocket skill is getting pretty high though. Was super cheap with it at the Bard's college. I would pay for as much speech craft training as I could afford and then simply pick pocket the money back and repeat the cycle. :D

ElysiumFate 04-21-2014 03:40 AM

@Howdy: Hoorah! I'm glad I'm not the only one who prefers solo games. There's a certain sense of power that you feel as a solo player that you can't get in MMOs or other multiplayers.

@Crimson: I almost chose one of the elven races for my last character but chickened out. I lied, though, I have not played a Redguard (they're considered human, yes?). My favorite race so far was the Nord. Since they're Skyrim's "native" race you really feel at home when you play one. Everyone calls you "sister/brother" and is happy to see you, whereas the other races get a lot of prejudice. I got real sick of being called Imperial scum every five seconds in my first playthrough.

I tend not to level those skills, honestly. I definitely don't use skill points on them. I like to get my enchanting really high and make amulets that basically max those skills when I wear them. But yeah, when I do pickpocket I save because I have a tendency to get caught with that...then chased out of town and beheaded. [lol]

Crimson Fang 04-21-2014 07:05 AM

@Elysium: Yeah, people didn't tend to respond all that positively to me running around as a High Elf. Getting much less negativity playing as an Argonian in my second play through. I imagine Khajiits would not be very well loved either. As they are not even allowed to enter cities.

Find those skills so useful. Although have become way too dependent on my sneak. Doing that one of the first Companion quests where you need Farkas to accompany you. At least I think it is him. Either way his sneak is clearly too low. So he keeps getting detected by the enemies and screwing over my stealth kills. I had gotten so accustomed to sneaking up with my two daggers then sneak attacking for 15 times damage. Almost everything gets one hit killed this way.

ElysiumFate 04-22-2014 01:20 AM

@Crimson: I'm sure the Khajits are bad, too. The orcs must be as well. I have enjoyed playing as an Imperial, though. While she did get a lot of crud from the Nords I went Stormcloak with her so I made them eat their words. I made my Nord go Imperial on the other hand. [ninja] Speaking of, the Imperial civil war route was more fun to me.

Yeah, trying to sneak with a follower is almost impossible. I have leveled sneak and pickpocketing somewhat in my current playthrough so that I could increase my overall level faster and doing either of those with a follower is not possible. *tries to kill someone without them noticing* *Marcurio sneezes* GAHDANG IT. XD

Crimson Fang 04-22-2014 02:47 PM

@Elysium: Yes! It is so frustrating! Speaking of frustrating I just rage quit the game a little while ago. I went into the Blue Palace to buy the house for sale there. But when I leave the castle I am met with a horrible scene. The city is being attacked by a dragon and a small group of vampires at the same time! Members of the Bard College are in the middle of the fight too! Haha so stressful! Tried resting before leaving to see if it would help, but no luck. Will just have to see how long it has been since I last saved when I play the game again.

Ooo, I am glad to hear that the Imperial route was more fun for you. This play through I am going Imperial. Since I am an Argonian, my character has loyalty to the empire for outlawing slavery hundreds of years ago. Which is proving useful. As I have used a few Stormcloak camps which I came across to level up my Werewolf skills. :P

That sounds like an intense scene to leave during @[email protected] I don't have the content for vampires yet so I don't get the big vampire raids.

I went Imperial as well (made sense with being a high elf and all). I actually found the Imperial guy that helped you escape to be nicer (and I liked his voice). From what I've heard, Stormcloaks are mega racist. I may try a play through to side with them again, as that's who I sided with on my Bosmer before scrapping that play through.

Crimson Fang 04-22-2014 05:13 PM

Yeah it was a bit. I left the Palace and saw the Dragon in the distance. Was thinking how unlucky I was as I rushed to kill it before it could kill anyone important from the city. Sorry guards, you aren't important. But when I got closer I noticed there were several other red dots on my radar. Was quite confused until I arrived and saw a battle being fought between the city and a small group of vampires. I killed the Vampire Master quite quickly, but the combined assault of the remaining vampires and the dragon proved too much and NPCs were dying around me. I tried reloading it several times. Resting before leaving. Although I might end up just accepting the attack. In retrospect it could add nicely to my character's story.

Yeah, they are pretty racist. It is something which is making me happier to be Imperial aligned this time. Even if I am yet to join the Legion yet.
