"And don't you forget it," Cal replied as he closed his eyes and let her run her fingers across his scalp.
Jeane scratched at his scalp lightly and grinned briefly before kissing his cheek.
"So what is this fountain thing anyways?" Cal asked, his eyes still closed. "You said it was the Fountain of Youth. What do you want it to do?"
"I don't know. Khalid said it takes a sacrifice. One person's remaining years are added to the recipient, prolonging the survivor's life." Jeane shrugged. "That's about all I know at the moment."
Cal blinked. That was something he'd never heard before.
"So, what, you do whatever this is to a puck or something and become immortal?" he asked. |
"That's sound reasoning based on what I know, yes," Jeane replied cautiously.
"I'm not surprised it's a secret, then," Cal said. "Hell, if everyone knew about that, there would be no non-humans left at all. There'd barely be any humans left."
Jeane nodded. "Yeah. I can understand that. It's too much temptation for most people." Which didn't make her decision any easier.
"That's most people," Cal pointed out. He pulled her closer. "What about you?"
"I... don't like the thought. I don't want to have to hurt someone so I can live longer. It just seems too selfish." Jeane shrugged.
"I've hurt a lot of things so I could live longer," Cal said bluntly. It was true, really. The list of things he'd hurt, and subsequently killed, to make sure he stayed alive was longer than he could ever name.
"I know. But you also grew up differently. That's more normal for you. I've only known about the rest of everything for a few years now." Jeane shrugged. It made sense to her. "Besides, most of those things were either after you or after someone else."
"So pick something that would otherwise eat you," Cal suggested. It wasn't a difficult concept, to him. "Hell, maybe Robin and Ish can find something for you."
"Yeah, maybe." Jeane shrugged after a moment. "Anyway, we've got some time. I don't even know where this Fountain is or what it actually is."
"Knowing you, it won't take long to find out," Cal replied. He pulled her close. "Just don't get lost in those damn books again."
Jeane smiled a little and stayed there. "I won't. My books aren't as reliable as I remembered, anyway. So you don't have to worry about that."
"Good," Cal replied with a bit of a grin.
Jeane laughed quietly. "What, miss me when I get sucked into my research?" she teased, briefly kissing under his jaw.
"Hell yes," Cal replied, leaning down to kiss her properly. "You ignore the whole goddamn world when you start researching something."
Jeane laughed quietly. "Okay, I'll admit I get rather distracted, but really."
"More than a little," Cal said. He kissed her again.
Jeane was more than happy to settle in there and keep kissing him. Really, it was nice, and distractions were good. Sometimes.
And Cal was more than happy to oblige her. He didn't mind being a distraction for her, not at all.
Jeane ended up deciding to at least see how hard it would be to get to the Fountain. Or get whatever it needed to work. So she talked to Robin.
And had located both chalices less than twenty-four hours later. "Hey Khalid, I found 'em." |
That surprised Khalid.
"That was fast," she said. "How many people did you make Robin bribe to get them?" |
