Cal snorted a bit but settled in and pulled her close.
"Go on to sleep," he said. |
Jeane mumbled something but settled down quickly, drifting off to sleep.
She got up before Cal did the next morning, starting to cook breakfast. |
Oh yes, Cal was definitely sleeping in after the night before at the bar. Or trying to sleep in, at any rate. The smell of cooking bacon lured him out into the kitchen.
Jeane had bacon sizzling in one pan, eggs cooking in another pan, and she had pancake batter all ready for when she had finished the bacon. She looked over when she heard him and smiled.
"Hey. Sleep well?" |
"Pretty well," Cal replied, stretching a bit and sitting down on the counter.
Jeane nodded and took the bacon out of the pan, pouring a few pancakes in instead and letting those cook. "At least I gave you an extra hour to sleep."
"And then lured me out with bacon," Cal retorted, grinning a bit. "Cheap trick."
"I did no such thing," Jeane said innocently, hiding her grin. "I just started cooking. I didn't tell you to get up."
"You did, don't deny it," Cal replied, grinning. "Nobody can resist bacon, you know that."
"Really? I never knew that." Jeane kept grinning, flipping the pancakes and keeping her back to him for the moment.
Cal just rolled his eyes and went over to give her a kiss. And if he stole a piece of bacon while he was over there, well, that was just a bonus.
Jeane swatted his hand when she noticed, but she didn't actually try to take the bacon out.
"Go make yourself useful and get out plates. Or I'll keep the rest of the bacon for myself." |
Cal rolled his eyes, but got down a pair of plates for them and set them down within reach of her.
Jeane flipped the first batch of pancakes onto a plate for him, along with some eggs and bacon, and then held out the plate to him.
"There. Now you can go eat." |
Cal took the plate and leaned over to kiss her.
"Thanks," he said. Leaning back against the counter, he started eating. He didn't need a chair or anything and besides, he wanted to wait for her before heading out to the couch. |
Jeane finished making the pancakes, figuring he'd be hungry enough to eat a second portion, before taking her plate and making her way over to the couch.
"See, this is nice," she commented idly, balancing her plate on her lap. |
"What is?" Cal asked, going to sit next to her. "Real food for breakfast, or a normal morning?" Because yes, he definitely understood the difference.
Jeane pondered that for a moment. "Both," she decided, leaning against his side. "And you being here in the morning."
"I'm usually here in the morning," Cal pointed out. "Unless I'm on a job. I mean, the bar doesn't even open until noon, and Ish never puts me on an opening." He smirked. "He usually sets me on the night regulars."
Jeane absently whapped his arm. "That's not what I meant. Normally you snore through when I get up to go to work, which I understand. Most days I wish I could stay in bed. But this is nice."
"You don't have to go in so damn early," Cal said, shrugging a bit. "Go in a bit later once in a while. We can do this more often."
"It's something to keep in mind, at least," Jeane conceded, picking at her food. "Here, I know you're still hungry." She piled four more pancakes onto his plate.
Cal absently muttered a thanks and started on the pancakes. He had to admit, she was right; mornings like this were nice, and they didn't get to do them nearly often enough.
After breakfast, and after she'd cleaned up, Jeane moved a little stack of books out to the living room.
"I have to go return these to the library. Do you want to come or do you want to go nap for a while?" |
"May as well tag along," Cal said. "I'm awake now anyways." And he had a sneaking suspicion he'd just volunteered himself to be the packmule for the errand.
