Jeane smiled and got her shoes and purse before picking up half the stack. "Would you mind?" She shot in an all too innocent smile. She knew exactly what she was doing.
|
Yup. Volunteered to be a packmule. Cal sighed theatrically and put on his jacket before picking up the other half of the stack, slipping his feet into his shoes as he did so.
|
"At leasst I'm not asking you to carry all of them," Jeane pointed out reasonably, locking the door after them and heading out towards the library.
|
Cal just rolled his eyes and followed her.
"Doesn't mean I want to carry them," he replied. |
"Well it's a good thing I'm just dropping these off them isn't it?" Jeane smiled and made her way into the library and over to the book drop off, starting to feed all her books through.
|
Cal rolled his eyes and handed her the books to return.
"So now what?" he asked once they were all gone. |
Jeane paused when she heard someone pass by them, muttering in old Arabic. She turned around and found the guy, heading towards him.
"Hey! Wait a minute!" When the man ignored her and kept walking, Jeane tried something else. "Wait!" The man spun around at that, his eyes narrowing as he strode back towards Jeane. "How do you know that language?" he asked, his voice quiet and dark. "A friend taught me." "What friend? I know of none in this area that know that language well enough to teach it." "Her name is Khalid." The man stopped at that and blinked. "Khalid? She's here?" "Yeah." |
Cal tensed a bit as he watched the exchange, but made no move to get between the man and Jeane yet. He was itching to pull his Glock, but he resisted the urge for the moment in favor of keeping an eye on Jeane.
|
The man took three long steps forward, grabbing Jeane's shoulders. "Where is she?" he asked quietly, his eyes bright as he looked down at her.
Jeane swallowed. "Not here. She has a house outside the city." "A house? Well, that's interesting..." He smirked but didn't let Jeane go yet. "And how do you know her, human?" |
"Hey," Cal spoke up, taking a step forward. "Let her go or you'll end up breathing through a few new places."
|
The new guy turned to Cal, eyes narrowed, clearly expecting to tell off another human. Then paused and his eyes widened.
"A half-Auphe... I had no idea they'd succeeded in that." Jeane's eyes narrowed. "Don't you dare refer to him like that," she growled. "He's his own person. Talk about him like that again and you'll wish you never came here." His lips stretched in an unpleasant smile. "And what makes you think that, little one?" Jeane was quiet for a moment, going through the puck's knowledge, before she said something in old Arabic. The man went ashen. |
Cal found himself oddly pleased at how Jeane was able to make the man react, and found he was proud of her for it. It seemed like she'd picked up a few things from hanging out with so many nonhumans.
|
"We will speak later. Privately." The man shot Cal a very unfriendly look before tactfully retreating, slipping out of the library again.
Jeane huffed and turned to look at Cal. "You okay?" |
"Fine," Cal replied, glaring after the man. He looked back at Jeane. "What did you say to him?"
|
Jeane smiled a little. "I told him I'd find a way to remove his testicles and brand him. Apparently it was done a long, long time ago as a form of punishment."
|
Cal snorted.
"You're evil when you want to be," he said. "That's a cruel thing to do to a man, no matter how much of a dick he is." He grinned. "I approve." |
Jeane laughed quietly. "I had the feeling you might." She tucked her arm through his. "So, back to my place now or do you want to go see if Nik needs anything while we're out?"
|
Cal snorted.
"If Nik needs anything, he can get it himself," he said. "He doesn't think I know how to properly shop, anyways." |
"Here meaning you would go straight to the meat, mystery meat, and processed foods, while he'd go to the organic produce." Jeane smiled, amused, and started walking.
|
"Pretty much, yeah," Cal replied. "Honestly, if we weren't meant to eat meat, it wouldn't be so delicious." Basic logic, really, although now he was mostly teasing.
|
"I'm pretty sure that's partially just you," Jeane teased right back. "You're a carnivore. The only reason you bother with the rest of the food groups is because you've found ways to annoy Nik more with it."
|
Cal snorted.
"Not true," he said. "Deep fried veggies aren't bad." He grinned. "But the fried pickles did annoy Nik, yeah." |
"See?" Jeane rolled her eyes at him and kept walking. "So I should make you try tempura sometime, then."
|
Cal raised an eyebrow.
"Is it raw?" he asked. "Because I still refuse to try choking down raw fish." |
"No, it's deep fried." Jeane grinned. "Deep fried veggies, shrimp, kalamari... All sorts of good stuff."
