The Miserably Unemployed
Hello. I've been trying to find a job for ages now it feels like. I've applied and applied and applied and nothing. I had an interview last week but come to find out they've already hired somebody. It makes me miserable to think that i could've had this job but something about me made them say no not this one. :(
|
Join the club! I haven't had a "real" job since graduating from college over a year ago. My dad also was laid off from his job and unemployed for four years before he finally found something. I'm just lucky my husband found something before he graduated and was able to go straight to work and was able to support me when I got back from my volunteering program.
|
Job hunting sucks. a lot. ): That's the only reason I refuse to go back to college actually.. I'm not sure if I can get my job back, and I know for a fact that I'll never find anywhere else to go to because I'm already looking for a second job.. Stupid stupid stupid.
I hope everything works out. Craigslist, although creepy, has a few odd jobs if you need cash. |
I've actually found Craigslist to be a great resource. I never NEVER apply for jobs through Craigslist, but usually I can find postings and go directly to the company's website to apply for a position. So it's good for seeing what's out there, but I definitely wouldn't touch a listing that doesn't name the company (which there are quite a few of).
|
Oh yeah? That sounds like a good plan, actually.
I've been looking up coffee shop and deli places on there, and I can't find anything that actually sounds legit. I did a nanny thing for someone on there, but I ended up not being able to do all the hours they wanted and I felt so bad. Bleh.. I don't know. |
Another great resource I discovered recently is my local library. They had a list of resources for job listings that were local (especially city and county workers, which aren't necessarily listed on usajobs or monster or other similar sites), as well as local resources for resume workshops, job fairs, practice negotiating salary, and stuff like that.
I found a position for basically a meter maid type thing in one of the beach cities near me, and I really wanted to apply because it would be AWESOME but the application evals are starting before my vacation. I don't want to take a job right now and then it not work out because I already have a vacation planned. So I'm basically taking a break from looking until I get back from my vacation. Then I'll be on full blast again! |
Join the club. I'm in college and can't find a job to work around my hours....even tried a gas station-graveyard shift.
Didn't work. So I gave up. Once I graduate maybe since I'll be able to donate full time to it. |
I have a feeling this is going to be my situation very soon. I'm useless at finding jobs too, which doesn't help. In that vain i have no suggestions to offer in order of helping you find one, but i send my wishes that you are successful soon!

try to find job fairs in your community. if you don't know where to start to look for them, try your local city hall or chamber of commerce. networking is key, so get out there and promote yourself. you can do this by doing more volunteering, either in your carrer field or just to help your community. meals on wheels is a good way to do this. you never know who's mom or dad has a family member that could be your next boss! good luck finding somethig, sweetie! |
yeah :( that happened to my grandma.

Been looking for an entire year... just entry level work. That's all I want! I took an emergency break from school for personal issues, and I've been looking ever since. Even just getting my foot in the door is IMPOSSIBLE!!
One year to find a simple entry level job is ridiculous!!! :( I've been trying very hard, too! Any interview I do eventually get also gets, like 10 other people. Having a lacking experience and background, I'm usually pretty low on the pile. I'm really just so miserable ._. I'm going back to school in the fall finally, but I would still like a job! |
I hear volunteering can help quite a bit. It looks lovely on a resume on its own (says a lot of nice things about your character!) not to mention it gives you experience, which is very good if you haven't had many (or any) prior jobs.
I'm unemployed, myself. I need to be looking for a job soon here, but I'm honestly a bit intimidated. I worry a lot that I wouldn't be able to handle a proper job. I should probably take my own advice and do some volunteering for a little taste of the workforce. I just need to find a place to volunteer at... I'm not sure of many volunteering places in my area that aren't heavily church-related. |
Humane societies! My absolute FAVORITE place to volunteer!
"Church-related" but "not actually churchy" organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Salvation Army are pretty good ones too. I've worked with both and it really is more dependent on the chapter you're closest to. I've heard of some AWFUL Habitat chapters, but I know there's some really awesome ones. Same with Sal Army. There's also tutoring for after-school programs. I know some schools can be picky about who they take on (basically background checks to make sure you're not a murderer or a pedophile), but maybe there's a program near you that you could get into? YMCA is another one, GREAT after-school programs, but again it's really dependent on your local chapter. Some don't take volunteers, some do only for certain things... it just depends. |
Oh, a pet shelter would be my dream volunteer job! It wouldn't even be work for me, it'd be play. But sadly, my county doesn't have a pet shelter! They've been trying to build one for some time, but the city won't fund it. Instead, the city built this huge, fancy building for them to have meetings in, like, twice a year. :| There is a sort of... foster network, though. They run quite a bit like a shelter, but they don't have a building for the animals, they're all in foster homes. They do take volunteers, but just on the weekends, I think, when they take them into petsmart. I looked into a bit once, but at the time I was 17 or so and they weren't looking for minors. That was years ago, though, I should check it out again!
Salvation Army is too anti-gay for me, I couldn't feel right helping them. :( Habitat for Humanity is something I've thought a bit about, though. I should look and see if they've got anything near me. Thanks for the reminder! No YMCAs near me, and I don't think I'd make a good tutor. But thanks so much for all the suggestions! It's given me some things to think about. :D One problem with volunteering for me, though, is that I can't drive. My mom would have to drive me, which makes things also dependent on her willing to drive me at certain times. And I can't get my license, because then I have to be insured, which we can't afford until I get a job, which I can't get until I volunteer-aaaaah! |
Ohhh Volunteer work!!! You know, I didn't actually think of that!!!
This could be a big breakthrough for me to finally have a good resume! |
Remember my friend, your resume is important.
Also, if all else fails and you're just sitting at home being depressed, offer to work a few hours a day at a local mom and pop restaurant for free. Help is almost always needed, you'll learn A LOT of things, and build up your resume some. If you're a hard worker and they like you, they might even start paying you under the table. |
I was unemployed for a few months before finding a job. I just took whatever job I could get because I didn't want to be homeless again. No, it's not the best job or what I want to do with my life but for right now it pays bills. I've been trying to find a stable second job for over two years now. I have a few side projects that make a bit of money but it's nothing that has a good stable income.
|
Good news! Just had an interview with Whataburger. It's not the best thing in the world. But it went really well and i'm going back tommorow to fill out some paperwork. Yay!
|
Good luck, Literally! I hope you get the job. :)
|
I'm supposedly pretty much hired actually. She said she was going to go ahead and hire me..whatever that means. Made me think it was like oh well you're here and you seem well enough so we'll just hire you. lol. I'm really excited. I've been getting really stressed out about this job search thing.
They also hired the chick that interviewed before me. I think they were getting really desperate for people. |
I am about to be 22 in may, and i cannot find work anywhere either. Ive tried online and everything....i lost my last job last summer and haven't found anything since, i have experience, tons even, an it seems to not really matter....
|
I've read that it gets exponentially harder to get a job if you've been out of work for more than 6 months. I don't quite understand the logic in that, since clearly you're more agreeable to job offers at that point right? Your average person is only going to have say 3 or 4 months worth of money set aside at any point to get through bills.
I took the last 7 years off from working to raise my babies. Now they're all in school and I start a new job (cashier) tomorrow. Luckily as a military spouse the exchange is a really easy place to get hired because they understand that job-less-ness goes with the territory of being a mil spouse and moving around the place while taking care of babies/being away from family etc. I'm only going to be working part time because I'm very against giving up too much time with my family. But after 7 years of not working, I can't be too picky, part time still means some money in the bank from me! Good Luck Literally. Even if it's not your dream job with dream pay etc, it's better to have something to bring in income and work from while looking for something better! The economy does seem to be picking up slowly now, so hopefully the legions of unemployed will find employment! <3 |
Congratulations, Literally! I'm glad you got the job. :)
|
I am 22 and cannot find work. I have a college degree and cannot find work! It's getting to be BS. I'm a very good worker and great at anything I put my mind too. Just they say I am over-qualified or under qualified. Nothing is working for me.
My husband has a good paying job luckily but I have been the housewife and I'm going stir-crazy. o-o; |
Outside of volunteering, charities, and the occasional dogsitting/lawn work, one year with no work at all. I've pretty much literally applied everywhere in this little town that I can, but I know eventually something will come. >.<
I think Melody, what would happen is that a person steadily looses a little hope in actually getting a job resulting in putting out applications less, etc.. But that's just IMO. |
