Confessions of a Hunter
Sam sighed as he entered the motel room and dropped down on the nearest bed. There was nothing he loved more after being stuck in the Impala for long period of time with his brother than finally getting the chance to lay down. His legs were too long to even attempt to lay down in the car. If he attempted too, he'd just wake up with bad cramps in both his legs and back. So he learned the hard way it was always better to wait.
He pulled his boots off before laying back on the bed, very nearly sighing in relief. Sure, the motel wasn't exactly one of the cleanest that him and Dean have stayed in, but it also wasn't the worse. He honestly didn't think they'd be staying there long anyway, so it really didn't matter. He wanted nothing more than to fall asleep right now, even if it was just for a short while, but he wasn't sure if Dean had the next hunt planned out for them yet. So he forced his tired body to sit up and he pushed a few stray strands of hair out of his eyes. |
Dean let Sam inside first, since Sam tended to get grouchy if he was stuck in the Impala for too long. Dean grabbed their duffel bags, throwing one at Sam with a smirk.
"Your bag, Samantha," he teased. It was so normal for them to tease each other back and forth like this that now he hardly even had to think about what he was saying. He knew Sam was tired, though, and he didn't blame the kid. Hell, he was tired, and he could run for days off adrenaline and coffee. But, at the moment, he didn't have another hunt planned, so they had a bit of time to stretch out and relax, maybe even get some food that wasn't heated in a mini mart. |
Sam couldn't help but roll his eyes at Dean's teasing. Normally he'd have a good come-back for the comment, but his mind wasn't working at top speed right now. He set his bag by his chosen bed before turning his attention to his brother. "So, is there any hunt you got planned or can we just go ahead and crash?" he asked. If there was a hunt, he knew he'd get out his laptop to get at least some research done before falling asleep. Or, if the hunt was easy, he knew they should just go ahead and take care of it before getting sleep... But he really hoped there was no hunt.
"No hunt here. I'll check the papers in the morning and see if there's anything around." Dean shrugged. "Otherwise we'll keep heading towards Bobby's." It never hurt to drop in on the older hunter. Sometimes he had some good ideas, or a hunt for them he hadn't gotten to yet.
But, for tonight, there was nothing to do except lock the hotel door and put out the "No cleaning" sign so they wouldn't be disturbed. And then they could crash. |
Sam nodded, more than just a little relieved that they wouldn't be going on any hunts. "Sounds good to me." He forced himself to stand so he could put a salt line along the door and windows to protect them from demons while they slept. When he was finished, he dropped back down on his bed and laying back, ready to go to sleep.
Dean watched him, to make sure the salt lines were solid, before he sighed and removed his own boots and socks, getting ready for bed. The motel wasn't the comfiest, but it wasn't the worst, either. Not by far.
Stripping down to his undershirt and boxers, Dean slid a gun under his pillow before he turned off the lights. "Night Sam," he said quietly to the darkness that was his brother across the room from him. Then he closed his eyes and settled down to sleep. |
"Night..." Sam muttered, very close to drifting off. Before he could though, he forced himself to sit up yet again. He dug through his bag, pulling out his gun and putting it within reaching distance. He wasn't normally this overcautious, but he didn't like the look of this place. He cast a quick look around the dark room once more before laying back and drifting off to sleep.
Dean got up before Sam did the next morning, which was unusual, and went and got coffee for them both. By the time he got back, it was most definitely morning, and time for Sam to get up.
"Rise and shine, Sammy!" Dean said, turning on the radio loud enough to annoy his brother into getting up. He started drinking his coffee, which was black, and left Sam's preferred mocha-frothy-sweet crap on the table. |
The first thing Sam was aware of as he started to wake was the smell of coffee. It wasn't enough to actually get him u though. No. It was the radio blaring and he jerked awake. He shot a quick glare at his brother, annoyed as he shut the radio off. "Jerk." He said, swinging his legs over the bed and standing. He took a seat at the table and took his coffee, taking a drink. The caffiene quickly woke him up. "So what's the plan for today?" He asked, looking over at Dean.
"Research." Dean made a face as he said it. He didn't know where the nearest hunt was, so they had to go do some research to find another hunt.
Although they could always just relax for a few days if there was no hunt nearby. It wouldn't be the first time they'd done that, after all. |
Sam nodded, a small smile forming on his face when he saw Dean's reaction to doing research. It wasn't a look he saw all that often, so it was always amusing when it happened. "Alright. I'll get started on it here in a few minutes if you want to go ahead and get a shower." he offered.
Dean grinned briefly and nodded, heading for the bathroom. He didn't take too long, since the hotels didn't always have a lot of hot water. So he washed off quickly and then wrapped himself in a towel, heading for his duffel bag to get clothes. He barely even glanced over at Sam, trusting that his brother was getting up and working on checking the local papers online.
Sam waited til Dean was out of the room before pulling his laptop out of his bag. He scanned through his normal sites, seeing if anything unusual was popping up in the news. While he searched, he sipped his coffee, scanning page after page of information. But so far, there hasn't been really anything worth checking out. There was on on the other side of the country, but by the time they actually got there, some other hunter would have taken care of it first. So Sam decided not to worry about it. "I'm not seeing anything." he said, hearing the door to the bathroom open. He really hoped Dean saved him some hot water this time. He hates taking cold showers all the time. But it's really his fault, always letting his brother go first.
"Alright." Dean picked up his clothes and started dressing. "Well then, I guess we've got some free time." He looked over at his brother. "Anything you want to do?" He gave Sam the option first, since he couldn't think of anything right off the top of his head. But he was sure there was something worth doing or seeing around here.
Sam thought for a moment. "Well... First I'm going to grab a quick shower then we can go get something to eat. There's a diner down the street that looks good." He said, standing. He finished off the last of his coffee and headed to the bathroom, hoping for some hot water.
Dean snorted by didn't say anything else, just moving out of the way to let Sam go take his shower. Instead, he finished off his own lukewarm coffee and browsed the local newspaper. When he found nothing that looked like a hunt, he relaxed. Alright, then. Time to look up events instead.
Sam rolled his eyes at Dean's snort as he entered the bathroom. It's not his fault he's hungry when he wakes up, is it? He turned on the shower, glad to see that there was some hot water left. But he knew it wasn't going to last long, so he washed quickly. By the time he stepped out, the water had gone cold. He wrapped a towel around his waist before heading into the other room, dug through his duffel bag and got dressed quietly. "Ready to go?" he asked, looking over at Dean.
Dean nodded and dropped the newspaper. "Yup. Let's go, Sammy." He already had his shoes on, so he grabbed his car keys and headed out. The diner was only a few blocks away, but he figured they could go look around and see if there was anything else interesting going on in the town. Otherwise, they could always keep moving. They hadn't gotten a break in a long time, and he thought they deserved one.
Sam nodded and quickly slipped on his shoes before following Dean out of the room. He made sure to lock the door behind them. He took a quick look around once outside, glad to see nothing lurking in the shadows. With their luck, you could never be too careful. His stomach growled quietly and Sam put a hand over it, trying to stop the noise. He was glad they were going to be eating here soon.
Dean led the way to the car, and then drove them over to the diner. They took seats quickly, since there were mostly locals eating breakfast, and Dean took his time looking through the menu, humming Metallica under his breath as he did. The place didn't look half bad, which was a step up from their usual joints.
Once at the diner, Sam cast a quick look around at the other people in the place. Everything seemed normal, so he turned back to the menu in front of him, mentally blocking out Dean's humming. It wasn't exactly loud per say... It was just easier to ignore. He decided to get some pancakes with a side of hash browns and sausage with a cup of coffee. He leaned back in his seat, waiting for the waiter/waitress to come over.
The waitress walked over to them, a pretty young blonde, and in an instant Dean had switched his smile from polite to interested.
"What can I get for you two today?" she asked, looking at the two. "I'll have the pig and a poke," Dean said with a grin. The irony of the statement was not entirely lost on him. "And coffee." |
Sam couldn't help but roll his eyes at Dean's change of behavior towards the waitress. He hoped his brother wouldn't start flirting with her, otherwise it was going to take forever to get their food. But he wasn't going to be rude to her, so he shot her a quick smile. "Pancakes with a side of sausage with coffee." He said, leaning back in his seat.
"I'll get that right out for you." The waitress smiled at them both and sauntered away. Dean smirked as he watched her go before looking back at Sam.
"Alright, Sammy. There's no jobs around here, no omens, nothing. We get a day off for once." |
Sam smiled lightly and nodded as he leaned back in his seat. "That's great." He said, pleased to have a chance to actually relax. Not like when they were on the job and were at a bar to get information. He could actually go out for a drink without worrying about anything. "Anything you were wanting to do?"
