SPOILERThe young woman slipped out of the quaint little cottage with a smile. Her friends were going off to party, but she'd opted to go lay out on the beach in her one piece swimsuit and read a bit while it was still light out. Amelia was waiting for the sun to set for a nice moonlight swim. She'd always wanted to do something of the sort, but had never had the occasion to. Spreading out the towel with great care, the blonde settled down with a happy sigh. Bringing up the new paperback to her blue eyes Amelia felt herself beginning to relax. This was certainly going to be a summer vacation to remember. For the first time she was alone without her parents. Living on the beach with childhood friends for months, it was going to be magical! The young woman just knew something special was going to happen. Then again Amelia always said that something special would happen. She was an optimist who believed pretty much anything could happen. |
Prince Rave swam towards the large body of land the was closest to his home. He had finally gotten away from his father who was pestering him to find a mate and take the thrown. Rave had seen every mermaid in the kingdom and none of them were appealing at all. But his father won't listen to a single word he says; not even anything about how his older sister should be taking the thrown, not him.
The silence soothed him, calming his enraged mind and he slowed his speed down. Why couldn't I have just been born into a normal family? he thought as he swam along the coral reefs a couple yards from the shore. The prince watched the fish play in the coral, not even bothered by the fact that he was there. Though he did go there often and it wasn't like he did anything to harm them. Rave looked towards the surface of the water, it was a beautiful day above. A sunbath would be nice... Rave thought as he moved towards a rock jutting out about the water. This was his favorite spot to be away from the kingdom and to sunbath. Not many humans went to that particular shore because it was either protected or privately owned, so he didn't have to worry about any humans seeing him. The Prince climbed onto the rock so that the only part of him in the water was the end of his fin. He laid back and closed his eyes, not seeing the girl sitting on the shore. |
The sound of a splash had Amelia losing grip on her book. Curiosity lit up her blue eyes as she slowly stood up to creep towards the water. It had sounded like something pretty big, and she was certain that no sharks lived nearby. Maybe it had been a whale? Biting her lower lip for a moment , the blonde quietly slipped into the water with the least amount of sound a human could make. Once she'd waded into it till that salty water was at her hips, she took a deep breath and plunged under water.
For a brief moment she opened her eyes to try and scope out the source of the sound. Not finding anything she pulled herself up to the source to take a deep breath of air. It was then that Amelia saw it. At first, all she could think was that she'd been reading far too many fantasy books lately. Merman's didn't really exist! To prove it to herself, she swam forward to poke lightly at the tail of this mythical being. Letting out a small squeak of surprise she swam back quickly from both rock and merman. He was real! |
The merman didn't notice anyone slipping into the water and sneaking up on him. His eyes were closed and he just took every sound of water to be the waves splashing against the rocks. But the moment he felt something touch him was when he opened his eyes and saw a female backing up slightly freaked out. He dove into the water quickly, not sure what to do. This was the first time any human had seen him up close. Rave started to swim away, hoping that this girl thought she was dreaming but, the farther away he got the more confused he got. She only touched him. There was no calling for any other humans, no spears or nets. She had nothing that could harm him.
The Prince turned and looked back, he could see her feet kicking to keep her head above water. He swam up behind her peaking just his eyes out of the water, waiting to see what she would do next. |
Blue eyes wide she watched in disbelief as the dark haired merman disappeared from sight with a splash. Had that really happened? Swimming around the rock in the warm water, Amelia tried to find some proof of his presence. Even the spot where she had been so close to him held no signs of the merman. Tugging a little at her one piece, she looked back to the beach with a frown. The book Amelia had been reading simply didn't seem so interesting anymore now that she knew merfolk existed.
Reluctantly Amelia sighed as she concluded the merman was gone for good. Deciding to swim more, the young woman moved to turn around. It was then she noticed eyes peeking out from the water. Her own widened at the sight while she struggled not to scream. So he'd come back, now what was she supposed to do? |
Rave watched as she looked over to the shore and then turned around only to see him there. He looked behind her at the shore as well, trying to see what she was looking for. When he didn't see anything he raised a little more out of the water, enough to be able to talk to her. "You didn't call for anyone, did you?" he asked with a bit of an edge in his tone that suggested something would happen if she had, but not anything in particular. He looked into the girl's aqua-blue eyes as he waited for an answer.
Prince Rave hoped that she hadn't because he really didn't want to have to hurt anyone or go back to the kingdom at that point. In fact, he actually would prefer to get to know these humans a little better. He knew he had the ability to walk on land if he chose to. He just didn't really want to mainly because he didn't really know their way of life. Now he had someone though. If he could become friends with her, maybe she could show him around. The thought excited him but he couldn't show it yet. If she had called for someone then he would have to forget about the whole thing. |
Amelia stared in disbelief as the merman spoke. For a few moments her mouth hung open before her mind finally wrapped around what had just happened. The young woman floundered a little as her blonde hair floated in the water and her thoughts imitated the uncertain actions. "N-no, I wouldn't either." Somehow it seemed wrong to even think that. It would have been a shame to see anyone used to the wide open spaces of the ocean forced to live in an aquarium with it's tight confines.
Curiosity began to rise as she took the time to actually look at this being straight from the myths and legends swimming before her. His ears seemed strange to her, but she supposed their fin like shape would help to hear things underwater. The merman's golden eyes were what really caught her. Mesmerized, Amelia fell into silence once more while staring at him unashamedly. |
"What were you looking for then?" he asked, a bit confused. Rave looked over to the shore again try to spot anything. He saw a rectangular thing that was not part of the sand at all with something smaller sitting on it. The smaller item he could not make out. The Prince swam towards her a bit, looking her over as well. He would die to have a girl this beautiful in his kingdom. Her body was so unique and alien to him but, if he were to walk on land, he assumed he wouldn't look much different.
After hearing her responce to his last question, all he could say was, "oh," before he dived down into the water. He had to look at her legs. That's what fascinated him the most. Rave swam around her once under the water, being sure to be slow and look at how this magnificent creature was made. After looking at them, he took his hands and touched her calves. |
Trying to snap out of her reverie, she smiled a little as she thought of what to say. Did merpeople have books? "I was wondering whether or not I should go and read my book.." Trailing off she watched as the merman disappeared with a frown. Weaving her arms back and forth in the water to keep herself afloat was becoming a reflex by now.
Peering down into the water almost absentmindedly, Amelia watched the merman swim around her. Twisting this way and that she tried to see where he went. She supposed he was looking at her legs, and was proved right soon enough. Blue eyes widening she almost kicked out to try and get his hands from her limbs, but somehow managed to curb the reflex. Taking deep breaths Amelia tried not to panic. This was alright, he was just as fascinated with her as she was with him. Merpeople, she supposed, didn't really interact with humans much which was the whole reason why they had faded into myths. |
After "feeling her up" he lifted his head out of the water again only this time directly in front of hers. Rave looked into her eyes for several minutes before saying a word. "You... are a beautiful creature," he commented. "Also, what is a... book?" he asked looking interested in knowing everything. By this point, Rave was about ready to just leave home and explore the human world. Then he wouldn't have to hear his father everyday telling him to find a mate. He could be free at last, with no one to bother him or watch over him like he was 5 years old again. That's when he spoke before she could answer his question.
"Would you... show me around your world? teach me how to be human?" |
It was relief that Amelia noted he wasn't touching her anymore. The feeling was short lived as his golden eyes captured her again. Gasping a little at his words, the blonde blushed and lowered her eyes to the water. "I could show you a book, so you can see." It would be easier to show then explain. His next words sent her reeling. They'd just met and already he was trusting her this much! Shock writ itself across her face as the young woman stared at the merman. Mind working furiously she tried to come up with an explanation for his sudden presence and ignorance. Reading did have it's uses, supplying some ideas for this plot. "Well ... I suppose I could, but why would you ever want to do that?" Leaving behind the ability to swim trough the ocean and explore it's mysteries! Then again, she supposed everything below the waters was as common to him as the buildings of the land were to her.
|
"The water is boring. I've seen most of it and it all looks the same. Up here is a completely different world, one that I've not experienced at all," he said rather excitedly. His eyes had lit up like a child's on Christmas day when the girl had said she could show him around. Rave had been waiting for this moment his entire life and now it was finally going to happen with the help of a beautiful girl too.
"I'm Prince Rave, by the way," He stated, almost forgetting that he had not introduced himself yet. "And who might this beautiful creature before me be?" ((couldn't think of much. sorry)) |
He sounded like the mermaid from Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale. Amelia shuddered a little at the thought. It hadn't ended well for that poor girl at all! Turning into sea foam for loving someone, it didn't really seem like a good prospect at all. She read too much. Smiling, Amelia plunged under the water with wide open eyes to try and catch a glimpse of Rave's tail before popping up again beside him and answering any questions.
"My name's Amelia. I don't think the ocean's boring, I think it's fascinating." A twitch of her lips showed that she wanted to smile again, though she preferred not to. The young blonde still wasn't quite sure whether or not to believe that this was true. Merfolk were myths, legends ... People of fantasy worlds and not reality. Yet here was Rave, a merman and a prince! |
Rave was taken aback by her statement. He never thought about the fact that similar to his situation, Amelia has lived on land her entire life and the water is fascinating to her. He thought for a brief moment before speaking, "Well, how about you show me the land, and I'll show you the water? Though I'll have to figure out how to help you breath underwater before I can do that. But that shouldn't be that hard." He smiled thinking of what he could show this girl first. Rave didn't want to take her to his home right away, especially since she's a human. He'd have to find a way to give her a fin like his before doing that.
At that moment, he suddenly remembered his father's list of spells. They had things such as how to make a human a merperson. The Prince often wondered what that spell would be used for if they never go to land. He had a hunch though, that a couple of the merpeople were once human; heck maybe they came from the humans. |
A flash of excitement lit her blue eyes as Amelia regarded her newest acquaintance. They were definitely going to get along, at least at first Weaving her arms in the water absentmindedly Amelia realized suddenly that she would have to find some excuse for Rave's presence in the house. Most of them would lead to teasing and dismay. "I can't wait! But I suppose before that you want to see what it's like to live on land. We're gonna have to come up with en explanation for why you're staying with me." The blonde paused for a moment to let that sink it before continuing. "We could say you're my distant cousin, or that you're my boyfriend, or that you're someone I met trough a past summer camp. I don't really think saying you're a relation is a good idea, because then my friends would want to ask my parents about you." If he was her boyfriend, well she could easily explain that it had just started a few weeks ago and that they were still trying to get to know each other and that's why no one knew about them.
