Though later on I found out it was because the department in charge had me classified as a man, even though I didn't indicate that anywhere in the application process.

I would ask why the school thought a man applied for a woman's scholarship in the first place...but my friend received a scholarship for black men when she is a white woman XD She applied for it our senior year of highschool and instead of writing about being a black man, she wrote about being friends with them...and since she was literally the ONLY person who had applied for the scholarship, she won it XD It wasn't big - just a couple hundred dollars - but I still find that hilarious to this day XD

I call it mustard or goldenrod...

Lately I've seen cars in that color too!

I like goldenrod <3333 such a pretty color! I hate brighter yellows - they hurt my eyes XD

lol, Maria!

It just goes to show you that students should really pay more attention.
There are LOTS of scholarships out there available for people who just spend a little time looking for them.

I had a scholarship to school too...it wasn't much, but it paid about a fourth of my tuition...

I'm lucky to have lived in Florida - they have "Bright Future's Scholarship" here which pays 100% or 75% of your tuition depending on your gpa, sat scores, community service hours, etc during highschool. Most kids go to college here with that scholarship...it's funded by the florida lottery.

Although after getting the scholarship, they started paying less and less of the tuition...100% became more like 75% and 75% became more like 63% D: They claim the funds are running out but that's BS because the same amount of people still buy lottery tickets.

THEN the schools go smarter - instead of raising tuition rates so that the bright futures could count towards the rates...they would raise FEES instead....bright futures ONLY covers tuition rates...not fees. So if they increased the fees, you had to pay out of pocket for it instead.

Stupid clever schools.

But I was still lucky to have that....in addition to grants and then some academic scholarships for my grades through college.

But you're totally right - there are SO many little scholarships that add up...but most people ignore them because they are small. My 11th grade teacher told me he applied for all the small scholarships for college knowing no one else would apply to them and won most of them - paid for his entire schooling that way and got cash back because he had more than enough XD

I had quite a few and then lost them my freshman year because my GPA wasn't high enough to keep them. So then I worked as an RA to cover my room and board costs, so that was like half of the cost of attending. And then my dad lost his job so I went on need-based aid after that. All of my schooling has been paid off since February though, and I'm pretty proud of that.

Hubby and I had a long talk last night about me going BACK to school. I'm really not fond of the idea, because anything I'd go to school for pretty much would involve a whole new Bachelor's degree. I don't have four years to rack up debt all over again--I want to have babies damnit! :gonk:

Oh, and the irony of the whole situation: I actually have a degree. Legit graduation and everything.

Hubby is one class away from having TWO. He never actually graduated and yet he has a fantastic job. Not that I'm upset about that, I just think it's hilarious that he doesn't actually have either of his degrees.

If I don't get a job this fall I thought about going back to school but it would have to be on scholarship and work programs...because apparently if you get your masters now - they won't let you have subsidized loans beginning this fall - I don't know if that's a nationwide thing of a florida think or a thing at my alma mater but that's a little crazy.

I'm still paying off my debt - had to take out a few loans to make it.

But I worked for housing too! I loved it -they took very good care of us :D

Jeannesha 05-02-2012 05:49 PM

I made my way on scholarships, loans, and working...
My parents were pretty poor, but made just enough to keep me from getting any other financial aide. But they couldn't pay any of my way...

It took me 10 years after school to pay off all my loans. But it was a low interest loan, so I didn't try to pay back any additional...just what was due each month.

My senior year I didn't want to work since I was going to be interviewing for jobs and stuff (and face it...I just wanted to have more fun). So I went to the financial aide office and asked if I could get another loan. They looked at it and said I had too many loans. But they said "We do have a bit of grant money". lol... I got FREE money! How great was THAT!?

Maria-Minamino 05-02-2012 05:53 PM

You sound just like me. I worked part time through college to pay for housing and food and stuff. I'm also on a ten year track on repaying my loans...I'm not making any extra payments right now because I just can't afford it working for fast food....

But ten years isn't so bad and it's starting to go down just a bit at least :)

I worked the first semester of my senior year but there was NO way the second semester - I interned full time in a middle school - same hours as the teacher. it was stressful enough - so I just worked spring break and then after my internship ended until I moved home.

My parents are really poor too - don't have a lot of extra money for stuff - so they couldn't help me at all - luckily though it got me some grants and stuff that prevented me from taking out TOO many loans. I'm lucky - I have about 18k in school loans (although less because I've paid some of it off now...)...my friend is graduating art school this week with 120k in debt O.O She told me that her MONTHLY payments would be 1,000 dollars a month!!!

Keyori 05-02-2012 05:56 PM

Yay grant money! I got pell grants mostly, and then loans to cover whatever pell didn't. My job this past year also came with an education award that I used to help pay off my loans. It covered about two-thirds, and I had saved enough (about two months' pay) to pay the remainder off in cash. Though after that I was pretty much tapped out, I had maybe $200 to my name? So hubby has been covering my expenses since then, which I've tried to keep as low as possible. I still don't even have a suit to go interviewing in, just because I don't want him to pay for one until I know I need it.

Hubby's loans, if we don't pay extra, will take 20 years to pay off. I'm trying to get him to pay them off in 5. They're just so large that I don't feel comfortable paying for his school loans AND buying a house AND having kids all at the same time. Property here is just too expensive to juggle it all at once.

I'd pretty much decided that most of my income will be split in half--half to his loans and half to savings for a down-payment on a house. And maybe a tiny bit just to spoil myself, because I've never really had money before (the most I've ever made was last year; I still only made four figures).

Jeannesha 05-02-2012 05:57 PM

Wow...120K in debt from ART school?

That's unreal...and what type of job do you get from that?

Fortunately, my degree got me a great-paying job...Programmers were always able to find jobs. I actually had 5-6 offers from my college interviewing.
I chose IBM, which wasn't even the highest offer I got...

Keyori 05-02-2012 05:59 PM

Programmers are still in pretty high demand. Sometimes I wonder how much better I would be doing right now if I had stuck with computer engineering.

Jeannesha 05-02-2012 06:01 PM

My niece is switching her degree to computer science.
She's really bad in math though, so I don't know how well she's going to do...

When I started college, there were NO degrees in computer science, so it was all Math majors. But then they started offering the degree my sophomore year...
So I took a double major...Math and Computer Science.

Keyori 05-02-2012 06:05 PM

I have a friend who did math and comp sci. He's currently working for NASA, but he hates it. He says the job is soulless and the pay is really crummy compared to private industry, but he stays because his job is secure.

Jeannesha 05-02-2012 06:07 PM

I wouldn't think that a job in NASA is very secure anymore...
They've had to let a LOT of people go.

I think it's a shame that they've cut our space budget back so much.

Does he work in the Houston area?
My husband's cousin's husband (lol) was an executive for NASA in Houston.
One year he gave us the "Gee Whiz" tour. It was great! We got to see a LOT of inside stuff that normal tours don't get to see...

Keyori 05-02-2012 06:15 PM

No, he works near Bakersfield, CA. The people they've been axing are ones related to the shuttle launches. He works on Sofia, which is basically a 747 with a telescope in the back. They fly it above the stratosphere to take photos, because that way you don't have to worry about weather or light pollution. He does something about writing software for the data collection systems on Sofia.

Jeannesha 05-02-2012 06:17 PM

It's good that it's something different.
I felt really bad for the shuttle guys...

I'm excited for that new Mars rover thingie...I think that's supposed to land sometime this summer.

Maria-Minamino 05-03-2012 04:12 AM

I live on the space coast in Florida - grew up going to see the launches and stuff because I was right there. SO many people here have lost their jobs although I know NASA is apparently looking into private options now that the government no longer funds them. So there WILL be space travel, just not goverment funded. It just sucks because Obama was all about creating jobs for people but then taking away money from the space program made so many of the people here LOSE there jobs. No one here is very happy about that.

Keyori 05-03-2012 02:46 PM

Right now they're still sending people there, it's just that the launches are done by the Russians now. They've become a space taxi of sorts.

Jeannesha 05-03-2012 04:20 PM

I know. People forget all the technological advances that have come about because of the space race.

The Chinese are going to take over it all I think.

Keyori 05-03-2012 04:25 PM

It's been a popular notion that if we just have another "space race" with China then we can finally get to Mars

Jeannesha 05-03-2012 05:17 PM

We haven't had any charismatic leaders that could make something like that happen...

Keyori 05-03-2012 05:44 PM

Neil deGrasse Tyson is charismatic! D:

I think that we, as a society, just don't value the brainy people like we used to. I think this article sums it up pretty well. Because there ARE good charismatic leaders, especially within the scientific community, but our ADHD media just doesn't give a hoot about that kind of stuff anymore.

Jeannesha 05-03-2012 05:53 PM

It's unfortunately true.

I don't know the person you named.

By "leader", I meant somebody who could galvanize the country to accomplish great things...We haven't had a president like that in ages. One who could reach across the party lines to all the country.

Keyori 05-03-2012 05:58 PM

Maybe you've seen him in meme form.

or

He's a very well-respected American astrophysicist.

(He may be, unfortunately, best known for being one of the leaders in the push for reclassifying Pluto as a "dwarf planet" or more recently, for getting James Cameron to actually change one of the scenes in Titanic)

Jeannesha 05-03-2012 09:55 PM

He looks familiar...

Maria-Minamino 05-06-2012 04:40 PM

I'll be updating more today after I go see the AVENGERS :D *so excited*

But I updated the shading on the male version of the shirt:
