I'm not even a full five feet tall XD And my 4th graders have bigger hands than me XDDD

But yeah, the flute and clarinet both belong to the woodwind family. They are the same family but are not played in similar ways at all. They both use air/wind, hence the category. But all the instruments in the woodwind family use a reed to make the sound, including clarinet, oboe, and sax. But the flute is different, there is no reed at all. The no reed thing was easy for me. The reed was not easy XD

xuvrette 01-13-2013 03:18 PM

reed? What are reed? O__O
I am so blank with terminology.

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 03:28 PM

It's a piece of wood you put at the mouth of the instruments and they look like this:

The vibration on the reed is what makes the sound.

ClockReject 01-13-2013 03:30 PM

Maria; Clarinet is the only instrument Clock knows how to play.

Cora 01-13-2013 03:47 PM

I don't mind reeds.

I mean both the clarinet and sax have them so I've gotten used to it.

I prefere the violin most though.

xuvrette 01-13-2013 03:52 PM

I like my violin... but I am very bad in tuning... I already broken 3 strings...-__-;;
so I am so fed up with it and not play the violin for years. DX

Are reed only made of wood? Does flute have it? still blurr...

Cora 01-13-2013 03:55 PM

Reeds must be made of wood or you will not get the right sound.

And flutes do not have them.

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 03:59 PM

Flutes do NOT have reeds - they are in the same family as the reeded instruments but they don't have reeds. It makes them different from the reeded ones. I love the flute :) But my main thing is singing :D

xuvrette 01-13-2013 04:04 PM

I check google... and I think the reed is easier to blow? No?
I found the flute blow piece embrochure is harder to grasp on how to glow to start with.

---------- Post added 01-13-2013 at 04:05 PM ----------

Oh yeah, anyone have good tips in tuning violin?

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 04:26 PM

It really depends on the person - for me the flute is a billion times easier.

I find the best way to teach people to blow correctly on the flute is to start with an empty, plastic water bottle. If you can blow across the opening and make sound on the bottle, you should be able to transfer that to blowing on the flute :)

xuvrette 01-13-2013 04:27 PM

I can't blow water bottle... T___T
I am so frustrated for that...

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 04:28 PM

Most people blow INTO a water bottle - the trick is to blow ACROSS. You should purse your lips and place them on the edge of the bottle opening. Using a steady stream of air, blow across the bottle...

xuvrette 01-13-2013 04:32 PM

I actually know not to blow INTO the water bottle... I get it across... still no sound... D: *kicks bottle*
I tilted the bottle slowly for different angles in a lot of tries... so I think I got the angle covered and experimented...

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 04:34 PM

LOL XDD

Some people just can't get certain instruments - like me and the clarinet XDDDD

ClockReject 01-13-2013 04:36 PM

Clock always wanted to learn other instruments.
Clocks ex, she played the sax, and it was amazing.

xuvrette 01-13-2013 04:39 PM

hmm... Saxaphone don't have reed?

but, Mariaria, you still at least can get a sound when blowing with any reed instrument? including that clarinet?

Sax also has a reed - so does the oboe and the bassoon :) (although the oboe and bassoon's reeds are really tiny).

I can still get a sound - it's just not that good XDDD

xuvrette 01-13-2013 04:59 PM

So in comparison... I am even worse since I can't even get a sound out of flute. T___T
I just manage to get some sound out of the bottle... by having a distance away... and the mouth shape is more to whistle pose... so... I think wrong as well.

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 05:14 PM

It doesn't make you worse!! I can barely get a sound on a clarinet...but it's much easier to blow on a reed than ACROSS a hole :)

Cora 01-13-2013 05:20 PM

I never had a problem with reeds. I had a problem with the sax being too heavy and cutting my lip.....but not with the reed lols.

xuvrette 01-13-2013 05:29 PM

I think reed is easier to blow and make sound...
Across hole... bleh! I WILL GET IT ONE DAY!!!
The first instrument I am buying when I have a job would be a flute. a cheap one though, I am playing it for conquering sake, not really for like professional.

Maria-Minamino 01-13-2013 05:42 PM

I own a flute from my flute playing days - it was pretty cheap though! XD

@cora - OTL that sucks D:

don't know why my posts double posted like that yesterday >.<

it happens sometimes. The interwebs hiccup.

I was little at the time btw. I started playing sax when I was eight. I hated it.
