'Aight guys, I've decided that I'll probably start making an opening post soon. No need to worry about finishing your profile before I post for Cyfnos. You can take your time and finish it afterwards if you want to
BUTT!!! After I put up the opening post, we'll all have to start using parenthesis/brackets for the OOC chat so things don't get too confusing =3 |
Gloomily it stood over a darkened, dreary land. The tower, a crooked and twisted thing, so easily instilled a fear in those who saw no choice but to serve under its owner. But for those who held on to the hope of freedom, it also became a symbol to hate and a goal to achieve. To see it burn to the ground and to see the head of its master fall, that was a dream the rebels have been working on for the past year and a half. At first it had only been forest dwellers who chose to brave the wrath of the so-called queen. However, humans have also began to join the cause. Handfuls have slowly found the courage to stand against a bitter power.
Cyfnos would not allow such a defiance. As soon as she heard the first whispers of opposition, she doubled the number of soldiers patroling her kingdom to wipe out any rebel they should find. The human towns could not openly oppose such a threat as many worried for the safety of their families. Rebels had to keep themselves hidden in such places. Ironically, only in the now corrupted great forest and the desolate areas between the towns were they free to take down the witch's minions. Cyfnos had severely underestimated the strength of the growing group and has since lost a fourth of her soldiers. It took two whole months to recharge her powers before she could make more. This time, her forces were tripled in number. But her enemies were tenacious. Half of those she sent out did not return. Three months passed. Cyfnos felt it was time to change her tactics. The sorceress carefully crafted new monsters from the shadows. Most of them would be stronger than her ordinary minions. These Brutes were larger and quicker as well which easily made them a challenge for the rebels. The other kind she had made came to be known as the Vultures. As their name implied, these fiends looked like large carrion birds but with enough strength to carry off two people. Their sharp claws could slice through rock if they so wished but fighting was not what they were built for. They were made mainly for espionage and uncovering the identity of rebels amongst the humans was their specialty. Because of them, many human insurrectionists had to flee their homes and seek shelter in the place her power had not fully conquered, the depths of the twisted forest. Due to an ancient magic beyond the queen's comprehension, her Vultures could not enter the woods even though she had so easily turned most of the plants into grotesque and thorny versions of themselves. The furthest the vicious birds could venture into the place was the area surrounding the tower which had been partially cleared of the mutated trees. Though they remained quiet for a while, eventually the rebels began fighting back again. Despite the new challenges, they slowly managed to prevail against Cyfnos' new soldiers. But the queen still had one advantage over her enemies. Her forces easily outnumbered theirs and she would achive victory by overwhelming such a pitiful group. In the months that followed, the sorceress would bulk up her army with more and more monsters. The price for churning out so many was that she would use up a great deal of magic. To ensure her rule remained secure, she placed her granddaughter in charge of the kingdom whenever she needed to rest. The girl, though young, was by no means weak. She had a power all her own which made her a formidable ally of the queen. On the day that Cyfnos felt she had enough minions, the ruthless one sent out a large wave of them into the wicked woods to search for the rebel hideout. Included in their ranks was yet another variation of her average soldiers. Although they were the slowest of her creations, they would prove to be the most difficult to destroy. They were large, blob-like, and slightly transparent in appearance and ordinarily moved like molasses. An unfortnate design flaw on the witch's part. Being over a hundred can take its toll. While their visage is far from threatening, anyone foolish enough to touch one had a good chance of getting stuck. When they are attacked, they have the ability to counter at a normal speed, knocking back whoever hits them. They are impervious to weaponry in that any blade or mace will merely go though them. Magic is also ineffective. The only way to stop them is to blow them up apparently. But even doing so can be a problem since the result is a sticky mess that could hinder allies. These soldiers came to be known as Gloops. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With steely eyes, the queen observed the battle unfold from the top of her tower. Even though the trees' darkened foliage obscured her vision, Cyfnos could feel how many of her troops fell in battle. So far only a handful have disappeared. But she knew the real battle could start once they moved closer to the area between her tower and the Old Woods, the area which made up the center of the forest and beyond it, where she felt the rebellion must surely keep a secure perimeter. Although the squadron of soldiers she had sent in was large, it was not meant to be the force that would defeat her enemies once and for all. It was merely a scouting party. Should they manage to deal a great amount of damage to the rebels, however, she would be most pleased. Suddenly, a thought came to her. "Call my granddaughter to me," she said to a servant nearby. "Quickly." Not hesitating for a moment, the servant ran off in search of the girl in red. He did not dare slow down his pace lest he be killed for it. The sooner he delivered her majesty's summons, the better. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [Sorry for the bajillion years' delay ] |
The young woman stood staring into the empty fireplace of the library, a place she spent much of the small amount of personal time allotted to her. She didn't read much but instead came her for its solitude and quiet.
As the door opened she turned to see who would dare intrude upon her. Her eyes narrowed as she the servant cowering in the door way. "What do you want?" She said coldly as she watched the man bow deeply. "Forgive me for interrupting Lady Gabrielle." The servant said breathless from his run "Your grandmother, the queen, summons you to her tower." Gabrielle nodded curtly and brushed past the servant on her way to the door, causing him to flinch slightly "Fine then. I will attend her now, go back to work." The man didn't have to be told twice and quickly fled back to the relative safety of his assigned tasks. It took Gabrielle only a few minutes to make her way to the tower for even she dare not keep Cyfnos waiting when she had been summoned. As she approched the queen she bowed to the other woman. "You sent for me, grandmother?" Her tone softer and more respectful then she had used with the servant. |
[Awesome post Arinia! :D And I love Gabrielle's bio ]
"Yes, I did." the queen said, speaking in tone seemingly much kinder than how she normally addressed her subjects. Cyfnos moved close to the younger woman and, in a manner that most people would consider uncharacteristic of the tyrant, put her arms around her in a close embrace. Of course, this gesture was only warm in appearance. The witch did not see the girl as a family member more than she saw her as a tool. A most trustworthy follower whose current unerring loyalty was wrought by the witch's dark magic. Pulling away from her granddaughter, whose ruby red hair was proof of their blood relation, the queen once more cast her gaze over the thorny forest. Gabrielle, as what her mother named her before passing away, was born to Cyfnos' only daughter twenty-six years ago. The princess died soon after, weakened by childbirth. Cyfnos then had her son-in-law killed since she saw no use for him. The man had only been treated well because her daughter wished it. The queen would have dealt with her infant granddaughter in the same way had it not been for the possibility that she had her mother's talent for magic. She would leave the baby in the care of the castle servants for the most of her childhood. Anytime Gabrielle asked what became of her father, the grandmother would lie and say he was killed by a wolf. What little affection she showed the child as the girl grew up had merely been superficial. "Gabrielle, I'm sending you on a mission. As you know, my lovely monsters are already combing through the forest. They are to find and eliminate every rebel they come across. While I sent them in to ascertain the positions of the bulk of my enemies, I also wished to discover their lair. I believe it is not a task they would be able to complete so easily. This...expanse was already tainted with some kind of magic before mine. I have yet to figure out what it can do beyond keeping out my Vultures. If the rebels are making use of it in another way, my soldiers could fall even amongst the trees I have twisted to my will. I want you to enter the forest. I doubt it will affect you as it does my pets so you should be able to traverse it freely. While my forces are distracting the bulk of the rebellion rats, you will look for their base. I can only surmise it is somewhere at the core of the forest. If it is not, keep looking until you find it. Follow the rebels who retreat if you must. I have faith in your skills. Take whatever weapon you wish from the armory. Do not let me down." [I'll just let you decide what the name of her parents are =3 I wasn't sure if Gabrielle could do any magic so I just left it vague. She doesn't need to have magic though if you don't want her to.] |
Gabrielle returned Cyfnos hug with one of her own. She often wondered, though she would never voice these thoughts, if her grandmother cared for her as much as she Gabrielle hoped she did. With Cyfnos' often mercurial temper it was difficult to tell at times.
Gabrielle stared out at the forest as Cyfnos went over her next assignment. She wondered what sort of magic could be powerful enough to stop her grandmothers magic. Would it block her own she wondered? Not that she had much to stop, her magic was quite meager compared to Cyfnos. It really was only useful for simple things like making herself faster, stealthier or making her heal a little faster. All things, that while they were useful, she could do without should the need arise. ”I understand Grandmother.” Gabrielle said as Cyfnos finished giving her her orders. ”I will not fail you in this. Is there anything else I should know?” She waited patiently for a proper dismissal from her grandmother, eager to begin her preparations to leave. ((Thanks :D I'll name her parents if I need to. It doesn't seem all that important at the moment. To be honest when I posted I still hadn't totally decided if she had magic myself. I guess the answer turned out to be she does :XD I'll add that to her bio when I get the chance.)) |
