Or undercook it, that happens a lot too.

Don't time it. Just start at 5 minutes under the recommended cook time and then keep checking it every 2-3 minutes with a toothpick.

Oh, and last time I made a cake it went flat.
Or rather. . . Didn't rise at all to begin with.

Hmm, that's odd. My guess is you stirred the batter too long.

Perhaps. I wouldn't know.
But basically, i'll just buy them.
Or let other people bake for me. xD

Leave a little lump ;D

Since cake doesn't rise like bread dough, the lumps are what help give it bubbles. Beating it too much will result in really dense cake.

I'm not good at baking anything from scratch. I can only do box kits and mixes.

Baking is a science. You have to follow the recipe exactly.
