Yes, please do. I find birth defects fascinating (yes, I know, this makes me awful and weird). My favorite part of physiology in vet school was the reproduction section, particularly fetal development.

Maybe that is weird, but I have something weirder I encountered.

SPOILERX

The other day at work, this girl was talking about being a vet assistant, and the coolest thing she did was hold on to a leg (of a dog) while the vet amputated it... I was actually quite grossed out of how cool she thought it was... Thank you Jesus I will never have to see an amputation... ON ANY KIND OF CREATURE >_<

steelmagghia 05-23-2014 03:54 AM

Haha, I watched a tail amputation. It's fascinating how many veins are in a tail. You have to just accept that veterinary people are weird. We have all the scientific fascination of doctors, and fewer issues with talking about it in front of our patients.
A dog comes in with a big pussy abscess to be drained and everyone in the office crowds around to see it.
Every veterinary student in my class had been banned from bringing up work or school during dinner conversations, because none of us know how to filter out things like that.

In my line of work, we crowd around when there are foreign objects inside of people bodies (usually it's little kids with a battery or something like that, sometimes it's paper clips and screws in an adult).

We also crowd around when people have massive breaks or shattered bones showing up on the x-rays. Or if they just have really weird shaped bone structure.

Foreign objects are a little more interesting in canines, FYI. There's a website somewhere for veterinary foreign objects. It's like a continuing competition. [lol]
But dogs regularly suffer from dietary indiscretion, so it can be real fun. Especially when it ends up revealing family secrets (like the indoor only dog who ate a thong that did NOT belong to the wife).

Libra 05-23-2014 05:16 AM

Haha, that sounds awesome. xD

steelmagghia 05-23-2014 05:26 AM

It was SO HILARIOUS! Most dramatic vet's office visit EVER.

They do a yearly contest, the regular one you have to have special access to. But here are the contest winners for 2012 and 2011:
They Ate What? Pet X-Ray Contest 2012 Winners
They Ate What? 2011 X-ray Contest Winners

2011's is funnier.
