"You're a very loyal man." He said, rather surprised by the fact he'd give up his own body to save his brother from that fate. "Very well, you'll both be with Germany tonight and separated the next morning."
Romano raced over to Felicano, and helped him out of his chair and leaned him on his shoulder. Feliciano was still unconscious, sputtering out random and unintelligible words. Romano carried Feliciano like that, grunting with the pain of his wound. He stopped when he got to Spain, unsure of what to say.
Spain took Feliciano, carrying him to the same cell that Germany was in. Romano was put in his same separate cell as earlier. "My men will come get you in the morning. Be ready to work hard and slave like a true man." He left them and went to his own room, slipping into the bed quietly and closing his eyes.
Germany made himself like a pillow for Feliciano, and Romano made himself comfortable by leaning on the bars, his back facing the two. He looked dejectedly at the bars that where in front of him, and fell into a fitful sleep full of nightmare of the days to come.
When feliciano woke up, he was happy to feel the familiar presence of his friend and his sibling. The smell of Germany's colgne made him drowsy and he fell asleep rather fast.
Spain awoke early the next morning and found himself in a crisis. He didn't want to make Romano work. The young man was so small and he was so gorgeous. His hands were uncalloused and the work that he'd be put through would change all of that. He paced his room. If he let Romano off the hook, he might attack or his crew would think him to be less tough. |
Romano woke up earlier than everyone else, he had been unable to sleep, some he just sat there, chasing the thoughts that ran around in his head, waiting for Spain's men to pick him up and force him to work like a dog. Despite what Spain thought, he wouldn't become a mindless servant like the rest of the crew. Romano would fight, everyday for the rest of his life.
Spain sent his men to go and get Romano to make him work. He stood at the wooden wheel that steered his ship in the right direction. "Feed him and then put him to work where you need him." He said blandly.
The men came sneering when light filtered through the floorboards. They brought something to feed Romano, which was unfa, courted and bland, like eating paper, and then sent him straight to scrubbing the floors, they said they didn't want him ruining the heavy.lifting with his wound ,and he had to clean up all his blood anyway. So Romano scrubbed away at the floor, trying to make the dull and worn boarding shine. Sadly in the middle of it all, he knock over 8 buckets of the water, 2 towers of crates and almost tripped 5 crewmen over. He was actually trying very hard to just clean the floors, but he couldn't helped it. When ever he cleaned it got messier.
Spain went to check on Romano and chuckled when Je say how poor a job he was doing. "Let me show you." He knelt down beside Romano and scrubbed, then washed the cloth and scrubbed some more, managing to get the boards a bit cleaner. "You see? Put your back into it."
Romano snatched the clothe of him, and tried to mimic him, but he knocked over the bucket. Again, and crew member skipped over it. He blushed slightly and threw the clothe at the floor. "I give up! This stupid floor!"
Antonio sighed and sat behind Romano, taking the man's wrists in his hands and making him do it right. "See. This is how you do it. Have you never worked a day in your life?" He asked bitterly. Up until he'd become a captain of his own ship, Spain had just been a boy on a random crew. He'd worked hard and long hours at a time. He was annoyed that Romano hadn't had the same experience.
"I have!" Romano defended. "Plenty of times. But no matter what I stuff up" He admitted. His brother on the other hand was pretty much perfect at everything. He probably was better suited to this kind of thing, but he was weaker. Romano tried to shake Spain off his wrists, it felt a little awkward.
Antonio sighed in exasperation and stalked off. "So worthless.." He muttered as he walked off.
"****ing bastard" Romano retorted softly, as he went back to scrubbing the floorboards. He felt a gruff hand pull up him up and throw him into a different station, because of his poor work. This time he had to fix a hole in the sails. He muttered angrily as a sewing kit was shoved his way, and he spent the next half hour trying to thread the needle.
Spain was becoming more and more frustrated. "Why don't we just throw him overboard?" his second in command asked and Spain sighed. "I don't know. I-I...don't want to..but he's just so useless.." Clearly not understanding, his commodore frowned at him. "Do you like him or something? It's been a Lon time since you've had an interest in a man." Antonio tensed. "Nonsense. I don't have any sort of 'interest' in him, and if you suggest such folly again, I will fu***** kill you."
Romano finally got the thread through, and set to work sewing. He was having a better go at this. He'd only managed to stab himself 5 times, and he hadn't ripped the cloth yet. Well, now he had ripped it once. "Shit" Romano buried his head in his hands. It looked so easy when Feliciano had done it.
A blast went through the ship and Spain gasped, nearly falling over. "Damn English!" He yelled, looking at the ship that was attacking. "Come on men! At your stations! Get this old girl moving faster of you value your useless lives!" He yelled and saw Romano up trying to sew a sail. "Are you mad boy?! Get down from there!"
Romano was holding to the mast for dear life after the ship got attacked. He was whining out words in italian, mostly begging for mercy. At Spain's words he started to slide down a little, still gripping on pretty tight as to not fall completely. He somehow made it down safely, and as soon as his feet touched the ground, the ship got it again, knocking him over and making him roll around.
Antonio grabbed Romano and threw him onto the bed in his cabin, shutting the door. "Dont leave this room and you should be fine. If the ship starts to sink, you'll need to go get your brother and Ludwig." He threw a set of keys at Romano that unlocked the cells in the prison. "And by the way, I didn't do anything to your brother. Ask him. I trust you'll be loyal and not betray me." he knew Romano wast loyal to him and would kill him if he had the chance, but still, this had to be done. He then went out to help his men fight.
Romano was surprised. Why was Spain doing this? He stared blankly at the keys in his hand. He could just go and get Germany and Feliciano now, but with the fighting going on they'd probably get killed. And he couldn't fight either with his injury. Getting up he walked over to the door and pressed his ear against it, hoping to hear what was going on outside to judge his chances.
Spain fought to save his men, killing a few English that had boarded. More canon balls hit the ship and he knew they'd be in trouble soon. They were going to be killed. He felt something hit him and gasped in shock and pain, his face contorting to a strange look of agony. He heard a blood curdling scream, and it took him a while to figure out he'd made the noise. He'd been shoot in the back, blood running all down his frilly shirt. He hit the ground with a thud and struggled to pull himself back to his cabin. He knew they'd lost. The English would kill them all. He felt the blow of another canon ball and the ship began to sink. At this point he knew he was a goner. The English had jumped to their own ship, sailing away from the know sinking ship of the Spanish. He closed his eyes and prepared for his own doom.
Romano heard the English pulling away, and heard a lot of the crew members yelling things about the ship going under. Romano decided it was the best time to get Germany and his brother and escaped. Flinging the door open, ran past Spain, racing down to the cells where he unlocked the cell. Germany carried Feliciano, and Romano lead them up to a spare row boat. He looked back and saw Spain lying in a pool of his own blood. He also saw men desperate to escape closing in on the rowboat. "You two take that and get out of here!" Romano ordered Germany and Feliciano, before running off to get Spain. They nodded and fled, managing to escape before the other crew members got to them.
Romano pulled on Spains shoulder, trying to get him to his feet. "Oi! Hurry up and wake up you bastard!" he yelled at Spain, trying to find another free rowboat. |
Spain was fading in and out of consciousness, hearing someone screaming at him all the while. "Unn.." He groaned. "I already...know...I'm a ...bastard...you...don't have to tell..me.." He gasped out, a small grin forming on his face. "Go. The ship...is going..down." He passed back out cold, the pain getting to him.
Romano heaved Spain along. "I'm not that cold hearted to leave you alone. Idiot" He said. he located an unused boat, but as he approached it he realised why. It had a hole in it. It wasn't to big though, so Romano was able to shove something in there to block it, and there was already a bucket nearby that he could use to bilge. He set Spain in it, and got it down. The plug did its work and barely any water managed to get in. Romano tried waking Spain up again, slapping his face. "Oi. Where we?"
When Antonio woke, the pain was still searing at his back. "If you don't bandage that up, I'm not going to live very long." He hissed, arching his back up as the pain worsened. "We're near an island. Go to it, we should find others like us there. I do believe there's a small settlement of former pirates there."
