Christine snorted. "Could have fooled me," she said, then she shook her head. "It doesn't matter. Go help yourself to whatever you can find, I need to go do some research."
Cal watched her curiously, but didn't stop her.
Christine headed back up to her room, pulling out more books and her research on Gabriel. She still wasn't satisfied.
When Kali noticed Christine had disappeared upstairs, she reluctantly got up to go see what she was up to.
"Chris?" she asked. "Everything alright?" |
"Yeah, everything's fine," Christine said, looking at her. "Cal is downstairs raiding the fridge, so we'll probably have fewer leftovers than we did earlier."
"That's alright," Kali said. "But you're holed up in your room, you don't usually do that unless something's wrong."
"I just..." Christine shrugged helplessly. "It's weird, having people here. Especially Cal, since we got off to a rocky start."
"I know," Kali said, going over to hug her friend. "Hopefully this will all be fixed soon."
"Hopefully." Christine hugged her back before she grinned. "Now go on, go back to playing with the dog, I know that's what you were doing."
"I was," Kali said. She hugged Christine again. "But looking after you is more important."
"Don't worry about me, I'll be okay. Things will make more sense in the morning." Christine smiled a bit. Despite how hokey it sometimes was, it often held true.
"If you're sure," Kali said. "You know you can always come in with us if you need to tonight."
"I know. I will, if I decide I need to. But for now I'm okay." Christine shot her a small but grateful smile.
"Alright," Kali said. She gave her friend one more hug. "I'll go and keep an eye on our guests, then."
Christine nodded and let her go, getting back to her own research, though mostly to distract herself now.
Kali made a small detour to change into nightclothes before heading back downstairs to supervise everyone else.
Harry was settled into his temporary room, chatting with Bob about a few things before he went to bed. Niko was reading quietly, taking the first watch so Cal could at least pretend to sleep after he'd finished eating.
When Kali saw that things had quieted down, she went over to Niko.
"Mine and my sisters' room is upstairs, first door on the left. If you or your brother need anything, just wake me up." It was her turn to use the bed, so it was easiest to just have people wake her rather than bother her sisters too. |
Niko nodded. "I will. I'll let Cal know when he gets up, as well." He resettled himself with his book, glancing over at Cal once before returning his attention to Kali.
Kali glanced at Cal as well and then nodded.
"Alright," she said. "You likely won't see either of my sisters until tomorrow morning, just so you know." |
Niko nodded. "Alright. We'll see you in the morning."
"Night, then," Kali said. She grabbed herself a bottle of water and headed upstairs. Before she went in to bed, though, she knocked on the guest room door.
Harry opened the door and smiled a bit. "Getting ready to turn in?" he asked, moving aside so she could come in if she wanted. Mouse was laying on the floor for the moment, since he usually let Harry get settled in first before turning himself into a bed-warmer.
"Yeah," Kali said. "It's my turn to actually sleep in a bed tonight, so I'm taking advantage. Our room's across the hall, one door over, if you need anything."
Harry nodded. "Alright. Thanks, Kali. Get some sleep, you look like you could use it."
