"Give me an idea of the starting point. What can your uncle do? I know some of the things, but not all I'm sure."
Katherine actually had to think about that for a moment.
"You know, I haven't had to actually catalogue it all before," she said. "Uncle is a daywalker, a shapeshifter, a mind-reader... He does things similar to Jedi Mind Tricks, where he can control weak-willed minds for a little while. Hypnotism and all that. The basic things, like the speed and the strength... I've seen him climb the walls of the castle before." She went quiet again, thinking. |
Leila latched on to one in particular. "Hypnotism. How does that work? Does it only work on the, ah, weak-willed, as you say? Or can it be used on anyone, to an extent?"
"It depends on the strength of the user," Katherine replied. She shifted a little uneasily in her seat again. This was a topic on which she was knowledgeable.
"Give me an example. Like Vlad." Leila wasn't about to let the subject drop that easily.
Again, Katherine squirmed nervously.
"My sire," she said finally. "Michael. He inherited the talent directly from Uncle. As did many of his fledgelings after him." |
"I see." Leila had a feeling Katherine was among those fledglings, but she didn't say anything about it. Abruptly she switched. "So basically your uncle does all but freaking fly."
"Pretty much," Katherine said, glad to be off the topic of hypnotism for the moment. "Although I'm sure if you asked him, he'd say he could just for fun."
Leila snorted. "Yeah, that sounds like something he'd try to pull." Although honestly her uncle wasn't bad compared to some other people she could think of, and they didn't even have the excuse of vampirism.
"I could ask some of my blood-uncles what they think his full range of abilities is," Katherine mused. "Between the twelve of them, I'm sure they could make a comprehensive list. They have all of the abilities amongst them." She paused, and almost as an afterthought, added, "I mean blood-uncles in the sense of they are the siblings of my sire. They were all created by Uncle himself." She had some 'aunts' as well, but they were all considered as a group in the masculine.
"Yeah, I figured." Leila shrugged. "Sounds fair to me, if you want to ask. If you don't that's fine with me."
"I'll write to Michael and see what he says," Katherine said. "He might know without having to bother the others, he might not." She smirked just a bit. "And if they get annoyed with the asking, they'll get annoyed at him, not me."
Leila snorted. "Very sneaky," she said with a grin. "I like that." Because clearly Katherine had had more time to learn how to think sneakily than Leila had.
Katherine grinned back.
"Glad you approve," she teased. |
"Of course you are," Leila said, grinning back.
"Now, what to do now?" |
"We can go find that historic bus tour," Katherine suggested. History was always a surefire way to keep Leila in a good mood.
"Okay, sure." Leila grinned briefly and started looking around. She was definitely going to have fun wandering around too looking at the historic district.
Katherine grinned back and followed her friend. She wanted to see everything, too, but let Leila dictate their pace.
"Bucharest is a beautiful city," she commented. |
"It is. I love the architecture. It's different from what I've seen so far anywhere else." Leila grinned and managed to find a good bus tour for them.
Katherine followed Leila onto the bus, using some of the money Uncle had given them to pay for the tour. She paused for a brief moment when she thought she smelled something, but went to sit down next to her friend anyways.
Leila relaxed through the tour, watching out the windows. The tour guide wasn't very interesting but the tour itself was, so she figured it evened out.
Katherine didn't necessarily relax, but she was able to keep herself from getting too tense. She still smelled the scent from earlier, but it wasn't very strong. It had taken her a few moments to figure out what it was, and when she did, it kept her glancing around to find the source.
Leila noticed how often Katherine was glancing around, seemingly at random, and her eyes narrowed just a little. "What's going on?" she asked, frowning a little as she looked at Katherine.
"I smell something," Katherine replied softly. "I don't like it."
"Any idea what it is?" Leila shifted, suddenly uncomfortable. If Katherine didn't like it, she knew she should be practically terrified.
