Lyra didn't stir when she was moved back into 'her' room. She was soundly asleep, now that she'd started to relax a little from the stress of before. The sewing had helped her to calm down enough to focus and relax, and now she was relaxed enough to sleep rather than doze. She slept for the rest of the night and into the morning, settled comfortably into her ivy bed.

She jerked awake late in the morning, looking around. She felt a little disoriented until her mind caught up to the rest of her and reminded her of exactly where she was and why she was there. Glancing around, she saw the dress she had made, and the three gems sitting on top of it, glowing slightly. Climbing out of the shallow ivy bed, she went over and changed into the dress. For a first try with the material, it fit pretty well, and she didn't feel she needed to make any alterations to it. She'd even put a pocket into one seam, and she slipped the three gems into it before tentatively leaving her room to go poke around.

Tachigami 07-27-2012 05:43 AM

Steth jerked awake rather roughly when he heard something... A bird, singing. He shaked away the fog surrounding him and stuck out his tongue, touching the hole he'd bitten into it. It seemed he always did it when everything was quiet and relatively easy-going. Rolling the stiffness out of his shoulders, he leaned over the still pool of water. Without making much noise, he slipped in, vanishing with a flick of his tail. The water was clear enough for him to see what he was doing as he traveled to the bottom, running a hand along the white crystal that gave the pool its glow.

Though earth-dwelling snakes preferred to remain out of water in general, they could still swim, though not quite as well as their gilled counterparts. Once he discovered the item of most interest, a crystal clear instead of milky white, he broke it off from the rest and returned to the surface, pulling himself up through a mess of confused black hair plastered to his face.

Annoyed, Steth brushed it back. "Reptiles aren't even supposed to have hair." He growled, inspecting the crystal. It was perfect for what needed to be done. All he had to do was wait for Lyra. The caverns were naturally built in a large, winding circle. If she went one way, she'd eventually make it back to the cavern with the pool.

Mageling 07-28-2012 09:45 PM

Granted, Lyra hadn't wandered far. She was by no means comfortable in the caves, yet, and she didn't want to go roaming. But she did cautiously go around to see if she could at least find her way to one of the rooms she'd been to the day before. At least then something would be marginally familiar to her, rather than completely foreign. Her wanderings were interrupted, however, when one of her feet slipped and she sliced open the bottom of it on a sharp bit of rock. She yelped reflexively at the pain and stumbled back, hopping on one foot until she found a spot to sit briefly and take a look. The cut wasn't as big as it had seemed, but it was painful and bleeding, inflicted on precisely the wrong part of her foot. Even if she managed to bandage it up properly, it would likely take a week or more for it to heal enough for her to walk on it again.

Tachigami 07-28-2012 10:13 PM

Steth's pointed ear twitched. Something had happened. He hadn't heard that noise in a long time, the sound of a human in pain. He dove through the cavern entrance and into the tunnel, searching about quickly for the source of the noise. It didn't take long. Through two more tunnels, he found Lyra on the floor and smelled the blood more easily than he saw it. With a flick of his tail to the wall of the cavern, he lit it up with bright blue ivy.

"Are you okay?" He asked quietly. Bending down, he lowered himself closer to the floor. "Let me see..." Steth lifted her foot, inspecting the source of the blood. It was definitely a deep cut, obviously having come from one of the stones near the edge of the cavern walkway that hadn't been eroded over time. He grimaced. "Maybe shoes are in order..." He muttered. "I've got a way to heal your foot. Do you think you can walk?" It looked pretty bad, the injury. Spanning the whole of the sole of her foot, and bleeding quite a bit.

Mageling 07-28-2012 11:24 PM

Lyra tried for a moment to put weight on her foot to walk, and bit her lip when the pain flared up bright and sharp. She couldn't hold back a breathy whimper as she leaned back against the wall, holding her foot up off of the floor completely.

"No," she replied. "I can't walk on it." Her voice shook, but it was more from a response to the pain and surprise than shock. "I don't even know what I stepped on..." Clearly, the bottoms of her feet weren't tough enough yet for her to go about barefoot without a care; she needed to build up tougher skin for that.

Tachigami 07-28-2012 11:39 PM

Steth twisted his tail around, and lifted Lyra up. "We'll take care of your foot before we start your practice runs, okay?" He gave a reassuring smile, hiding his fangs. The ivy's glow lead back toward where he had been before hearing Lyra's distress call. While the water in that cavern was clear enough to see to the bottom and grew power-wielding crystal, it held a healing power that rivaled any doctor's remedies.

His protective instinct had sent him forward without a second thought. Perhaps they could be of other use. "The rock was probably one of the loose ones from near the edge of the cavern." He said, shaking the thought away. "I've never gotten too close to the edge of the cave when I go by, so they're still sharp. It's best to walk along the middle of the cave, and let the ivy light your way."

He moved into the cavern he left a moment ago, lowering Lyra down and onto the edge of the water, letting her feet hang in. The blood still dripping from the wound only momentarily discolored the water, before it faded, as though completely out of existence. Carefully, Steth watched the slash in the bottom of her foot become thinner, and eventually, become no more than a silver scar.

Mageling 07-29-2012 08:01 PM

Lyra held still as he carried her, not wanting to squirm at all and have him drop her. Her foot throbbed in time with her heartbeat, even as her feet were hanging in the air, and she winced a little at the sting of the water touching the cut as she was set down. Almost immediately, though, the pain eased and the throbbing stopped. Twisting her foot a little so she could see the bottom of it, she watched in fascination as the bleeding stopped, the skin reknit, and the new pink scar faded to an older silvery one. Pulling her foot out of the water, she gingerly touched the scar with her fingers as if to see if it had really healed. The scar wasn't as sensitive as the rest of the skin there, but there was no doubting that it was healed.

"Amazing," she breathed as she stood up and tested her foot some more. Aside from a faint, burning stretch of the new skin, her foot was back to normal.

Tachigami 07-29-2012 08:22 PM

Steth leaned down to the water. Even as she lifted her foot from it, the surface only budged a little, and returned to its normal, mirror-smooth state. "This water can heal the most life-threatening of wounds, but it won't bring back the dead." He informed. "When you've injured yourself, submerge the injury in the water, and the crystals at the bottom will heal you."

He moved back and set the bit of crystal in his hand on the surface of the water. It didn't sink, nor disturb the water's surface. It stood on top of the water as if it were glass. "It's early. Do you still want to learn of your power?" Steth thought he knew the answer. Lyra was almost desperate to begin learning yesterday, but was too wary to be able to control them.

Mageling 07-29-2012 08:41 PM

At Steth's words, Lyra's attention was finally turned back to the yearning inside her that hadn't gone away. She'd been able to put it in the back of her mind up until now, but she hadn't been able to ignore it completely and now it was coming back in full force. It made her feel like there was an aching emptiness inside her that only one thing could fill. Even when she'd left her room that morning, she'd put the gems into her pocket out subconsciously, rather than out of any purposeful gesture. Without even thinking about it, one of her hands went into the pocket and closed around the gems.

"Please," she replied, looking at him. "I want to learn. Anything you'll teach me, I want to learn it."

Tachigami 07-29-2012 09:03 PM

Steth nodded. "Okay, okay." He moved around to encircle Lyra with his tail. This way if she struggled she could subconsciously pull energy from him. "We'll start simply right now, with a cool power. For now we'll use a combination of powers: Yours, the gem, and mine. Before you can stand on your own and use your abilities without knocking yourself unconscious, you'll have to use a helper, me, and something to separate a specific power, the gem. Hold onto it."

He leaned forward, close to the water's edge and close to Lyra. "I want you to focus. Feel how cold the blue gem is in your hand. With your other hand, see your power. This one is blue, like the gem. Don't force it. You're strong enough to let it come as it wants to. Put your hand over the water. Will it to change the way you want it to. Make it freeze."

Mageling 07-30-2012 02:28 AM

Lyra's fingers touched all three gems in her pocket before singling one out. She wasn't entirely sure how she knew it was the blue one, but she was certain it was and she wrapped her fingers around it tightly. It almost seemed to pulse slightly against her skin, albeit not an unpleasant feeling. It was indeed cold in her hand, even though it had been in her pocket all morning or in her hand when it wasn't, but it was a comforting sort of chill.

She didn't, however, understand what he meant about seeing the power with her other hand. It didn't make sense to her, and when she reached out to touch the water, it remained water. The gem in her left hand continued to pulse gently, but nothing else seemed to happen. Then, as if there was some unspoken signal that Lyra herself was unaware of, the chill from the gem shot up her arm, across her shoulders, and down her other arm to the water. A thin, frost-latticed sheet of ice formed around her fingers on the surface of the water.

Tachigami 07-30-2012 02:45 AM

Steth smiled when he saw the water change. Although there lacked a bluish tone around the hand that changed it. "Very good." He muttered. "You'll take more energy to spread the ice, and at this point, it would take a lot out of you. For now, keep it small. If you focus hard enough, you'll be able to see the beginning of your power, an aura surrounding the hand you're controlling it with. This way, you won't have to rely solely on the outer power of a specific gem or jewel to help."

He touched the ice that had been formed, and it fell away to nothing. "See what you can do again. This time don't try to focus on the gem in your hand, but the hand that summons the energy. Flatten your hand on the surface of the water and it'll be able to exit through more than a specific point. It lessens the amount of energy you use, as well." he moved back a bit, giving Lyra room. She had vast power in her elemental abilities. With a little coaching she could perfect them within a matter of weeks.

Mageling 07-30-2012 04:23 AM

Lyra still wasn't entirely sure how to do as he asked, and it was beginning to frustrate her. She felt like she was so close to getting it, but that last metaphorical finger's-width could have been a canyon for all that it mattered. Almost reflexively, she closed her eyes for a moment and took a slow, calming breath. She made the tension fall out of her shoulders in much the same way she did back in the village, when some of the more brainless girls in her age group annoyed her.

Before she realized it, her hand flattened on the surface of the water. She only noticed when she felt the chill around her hand again, but this time it wasn't coming from the gem still clutched in her pocket. This time, it seemed to be coming from within her, from a core she hadn't realized was there until it became active. She snapped her eyes open and looked at her hand. Ice had formed on the water around her hand, and her hand itself was tinged very faintly bluish. It almost seemed to glow. It surprised her so much that she jerked her hand off of the water again, and the chill glow vanished.

Tachigami 07-30-2012 04:42 AM

It took a few moments, moments in which Steth watched Lyra fight back a powerful emotion. He reached forward to touch the thin sheath of ice the girl had managed to create without quite realizing it. "Your power relates to emotion." He observed. "Non-specific emotion, as long as they're strong enough, feeds your energy and strengthens your power."

He put his hand over the thicker ice Lyra made, and it melted almost immediately. "Find an emotion you're most comfortable with and let it ride along with you. Something you can sustain for an extended period without having to concentrate. It won't change the outcome of your various power, though. As long as it's strong enough, you'll be able to feed every one of your abilities with it until you can call on your power without much concentration."

He moved back. "Try it one more time. This time, try to freeze the entire surface of the pool. Don't let it go out of control, or you'll spend more energy than necessary."

Mageling 08-01-2012 01:32 AM

Lyra was quiet for a moment, searching for a sufficiently strong emotion. She wasn't sure she'd felt anything like that in her life, aside from the terror of a couple of days ago, and she didn't want to relive that feeling. She'd only just started feeling a little relaxed, she didn't want that fear to come back. Finally, she settled on the joy she felt the last time she'd been given a new dress. She'd felt special and appreciated, and she'd felt it every time she wore that dress. And, if she was being honest, she kind of felt that way now, now that she'd started to harness her abilities. She focused on that feeling, trying to accomplish what Steth wanted.

The ice spread slowly from her hand across the surface of the water, but stopped about three-quarters of the way. Sweat had broken out on Lyra's skin and her head started throbbing a bit; a migraine would form later, she was certain. She knew what migraines felt like.

"I--I can't get it to go any further," she said.

Tachigami 08-01-2012 02:00 AM

He could almost feel the power behind Lyra’s emotional feed. It was very evident. As it spread, he kept himself back, withdrawing the influence of his own power. The spread of ice faltered and halted well more than halfway down.

“You did beautifully.” He said. “Especially for a first-timer. Don’t try to go over your present ability or you’ll put yourself down too quickly.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “You can take a break for now, okay? No need to knock yourself out.” He straightened up and moved back, toward the tunnel. “Do you want to go outside? It’s been a couple days, and maybe the morning air will wake you up a bit more.” He paused. “Just, er, keep to the center of the walkways to avoid the sharper rocks.”

Mageling 08-01-2012 02:38 AM

Lyra nodded, a little distractedly. The migraine was coming on strong, and she brought up one hand to put a bit of pressure on the front of her skull, to try to ease the throbbing of the headache.

"Sleep might be best," she said softly. "My head is throbbing..." It didn't help that she hadn't had anything to eat yet that morning, but the migraine was overriding that. She would likely realize she was hungry later, once the pounding headache faded.

Tachigami 08-01-2012 02:45 AM

Steth nodded. “Okay then, whichever you prefer.” He put a hand on the wall and it lit up. “There we are. Follow the glow and it’ll take you back to the room with the ivy bed.” He didn’t know whether to note it as her room yet. But it was the most comfortable for a human to sleep. He went off to let her find her way, going back into the aerated room to dispose of the rest of the goat Lyra had done a very good number on. He would stalk something smaller this time, to lessen the waste. Moving outside, he threw the rest of the goat down the side of the steeper mountain face, off to the right of his cavern’s entrance. It would be eaten by scavenging birds or larger animals. Glancing backward, he started up and slithered into the underbrush.

Mageling 08-02-2012 10:30 PM

Lyra made her way back to her room quietly, making sure not to step on any more sharp rocks. When she got back to her room, she promptly curled up in the ivy bed and closed her eyes against her pounding headache. Being in the darker, quiet room helped, but it didn't ease the pounding completely. Thankfully, Lyra was able to fall asleep quickly.

She wasn't sure how long she slept, but when she woke up again, her headache was much, much dissipated. It wasn't completely gone, but it was almost there, and it wasn't anywhere near as uncomfortable as it had been before. Getting up, she straightened her dress and ran her fingers through her hair before venturing out again. She didn't plan tp gp far, but maybe she could get some more exploring done. She was sure she hadn't seen everything yet.

Tachigami 08-03-2012 07:14 AM

After Steth returned with a large rabbit, skinned and gutted it, and set up the stake above a renewed fire, he went back to the cavern that contained its many fabrics. He found a durable one and cut rectangles about the size of Lyra's feet. He recalled the size to within an inch, having examined the bottom of her injured foot not long before. Curled among the bolts and piles of fabric he plucked various scales from his own tail, slightly painful when they detached, but they would never go bad. With a bit of work, he managed to create durable sandals that would be able to form to the foot, and would save Lyra's feet from more injury. The leather based sole that saved her foot from contact with the scales would be soft and easy on the foot. He had lost a lot of scales in the make, but they would grow back.

He left the cavern and wandered back to check on Lyra. She was gone, perhaps on a search throughout the rest of the cavern. Without much idea where she went, however, Steth went off on a non-definitive look for her. Perhaps she would find all the other treasures he'd acquired and be more comfortable here...

Mageling 08-04-2012 09:53 PM

Lyra had just taken to wandering around a bit. She was still hesitant to touch anything, since she didn't want to accidentally break or damage something and incur Steth's anger. No matter what he said, she was still going to be careful until she knew what was and wasn't safe for her to touch.

Days turned into weeks and even some months as Lyra stayed in the caves with Steth. She absorbed the lessons he gave her as fast as she could, wanting to learn everything she could possibly learn about her gifts and how to use them. It didn't take her long to realize that she'd already surpassed the level she'd witnessed from her uncle, when she'd lived in the village. It struck her that her uncle didn't know much more than basic skills, or couldn't do more than that to begin with, and she was oddly proud of the fact that she was able to learn more than that. Using her skills didn't tire her out anymore as it had in the past, and she was able to work for longer without that throbbing migraine returning. Now, however, she was starting to miss village life a little bit.

Tachigami 08-05-2012 01:17 AM

Steth was more than happy with Lyra's abilities that continuously surprised him as they went on with their lessons into several months. He kept a steady flow of rain going to the village every several days, small showers that wouldn't drown their crops or create a flooded marsh. There came a day when he replaced the gems she used to help her power with useless colored stones, and yet her ability continued to mount with each day that passed, though she tended to tire quickly. Around the four-month mark, even her migraines became fewer and less severe.

An afternoon came when Steth was clearing a scheduled blanketing of clouds when a thought hit him... Lyra hadn't bee far out of the caves since she arrived. And she hadn't even talked about returning to the village, at least for a visit, or to stay, even. He quickly returned to the cavern system and found Lyra. "Dear, it's been quite a while since you visited your peers." He said definitely. "Would you like me to take you back, perhaps for a visit? I wouldn't doubt a wish to remain there now that you're free, but it's still rather dangerous on the mountain."

Mageling 08-07-2012 10:30 PM

Lyra had only noticed after the fact that Steth had switched out the gems she'd been using, but by the time she'd realized it, it didn't matter anymore. She still kept the colored stones, though; perhaps she would be able to make something out of them. She looked at Steth a little guiltily when he asked if she wanted to go back to the village. Apparently, she wasn't as skilled in hiding her thoughts as she imagined she was.

"A short visit might not be a bad idea," she said cautiously. "Just to see how everyone is doing..." She looked at him hopefully.

Tachigami 08-07-2012 10:41 PM

Steth nodded knowingly and led her to the mouth of the cave. From where they were they could see the village. "Of course." He said. "I realize homesickness befalls everyone from time to time." Even if they did give you to a monster... He shook his head. "Anyway, come along, we shall visit your family! I do hope they won't mind my presence." He added after the fact, as he led Lyra down the path along the side of the mountain. All the rain had really brought both the valley and the mountainside back to life. Everything was green and brown, dotted with various colors, and fertile.

Mageling 08-07-2012 11:23 PM

That surprised Lyra.

"You're... coming with me?" she asked. She had assumed that he would want to stay behind; after all, he had never seemed to feel the need to visit the village in person before. "Why the sudden interest?" She sped up a little to keep up with him as they went; he seemed to move much more deftly down the mountain than she could, and she had to work to keep up with him.
