Creepy fan...
I just turned the ceiling fan on in this room. I haven't used the fan in here in months, maybe more than a year. It's making this creepy squeaking noise.
I'm wondering, is there anyone else out there like me, terrified of a ceiling fan falling and chopping you in the head? Do you think that this is a legitimate fear? |
I've got that same fear. That, and I've got a giant metal floor fan, which sounds like a mini plane about to take off, and every time I go past it I'm absolutely terrified those giant metal blades will fly off, break through the cage and decimate me!
It can be a legit fear. Maybe irrational, but a fear. At least for me too... Also, you may need to tighten the bolts in the fan. Maybe the blades are loose? I need to take care of that every six or so months, sometimes a year. But... Yes. That metal fan doesn't turn on unless it's far away from me. |
I wouldn't worry about a ceiling fan lobbing the old head off x3. I've put my hand and head through ceiling fans before, while it wasn't a fun experience, my head never left my shoulders.
It could be the bearings, the blades needs to be tightened, or simply a old fan. Go buy a new one :D. |
Well, I've never exactly had a FEAR of it...
But I have frequently wondered what would happen if you stuck your arm through a ceiling fan if it was going particularly fast. o.o |
My sister had a fan like that in her room and one of the blades fell off and hit her. She wasn't hurt though. So yes, it is a legit fear. [:P] The one that was in my kitchen was making noises until I fixed it and it's fine now. It's pretty big so I was worried about that one falling apart too.

Completely legit fear. My ceiling fan used to fall on me at least once a night when I was younger. Maybe we should have gotten better bolts.[drool]

usually ceil fans have this safety wire thingy to make not drop to the ground (like if it fell, the wire would catch it).

Though no fans have ever fallen on my head before, I'm definitely very afraid of them >.> There's one near my computer which I never ever turn on, however much I'd be sweating, because it creaks. And, I've heard stories where the fan fell on the head of my friend's cousin or someone and it cut through her nose, leaving a clearly visible horizontal line across the middle of it and I definitely don't want my face to have a scar like that!

;) this is hot for my pale british body. the fan wouldn't be spining when it falls off so it's not like its going to land on you and spin at you? OMG we have this fan in work and my workfriend picked it up by the cage whilst it was spinning adn his finger when though and caught on the blade apparently blood went everywhere, there was a tiny splatter on the fan still left on it - naturally I found this. I have a thing for blood ;) |

This thread is making me scared of ceiling fans. Luckily, I haven't encountered many of any sort.

I thought this thread was about creepy fans of fandom/celebrities too...when I looked at the title.
Anyway, I haven't really had that much of a fear of the ceiling fan falling down on me, but I have been afraid of falling down a ladder as a result of having to clean the dust off it each year. But that's more an unreasonable fear of heights that I have when I'm not in a very secure high place. Speaking of ceiling fans, when I was younger I thought it'd be fun to throw a small plush toy onto one of the blades and then watch it spin on top. Even though it wasn't spinning when I threw the plush on top and actually managed to get it to land on the blade it fell down almost as soon as the fan started spinning. ah well, should've expected that. |
If it falls off it will pull the wires out, and once it hits you it will fall into the sudden stoppage factor. Meaning, it will just hurt, not kill you. =)

...That's the number one sign that the ceiling fan is about to attack. Ceiling fans give off a colorful variety of warnings before they do things, but I've never heard of one that's as aggressive as yours. If you truly haven't used it for as long as you say, that's probably the reason. Ceiling fans are known to have very short memories, so if you don't use them frequently enough they can completely forget who you are. That doesn't explain why it's trying to kill you though... It might be because something's aggravating it. Is it humid in your house? Is there anything in the room that's being very loud (kids are a common source)? Ceiling fans hate those things. My advice: stay away from it AT ALL COSTS. Considering that it hasn't made any attempts to kill you yet, it's probably waiting for you to walk close enough. Then it'll fall on you and quickly decapitate you. I'd suggest caling the cops or even animal control, but the last time I did that in a similar incident they just laughed at me for some odd reason... People just don't take threats seriously nowadays. It's sad, really. Maybe try getting some bait to walk under it...like the family dog or a young child. Then, the moment the ceiling fan falls, just shoot it with a couple tranquilizers. Then make sure it's unconscious, then quickly hack it apart. That should about solve your problem.
