"Yeah, boots and gauntlets are both used in flying," Kae said, frowning a little. Because damn she wanted to figure this out.
"Well, come sit and ponder it a little," Elaine said. "You're going to hurt later as it is, what with all of those meetings the floor had with your face."
"That's what those blankets were for," Kae pointed put, though she did flop back on the couch with a pout.
Loki knocked on the doorframe then, raising his eyebrows at both girls. "What exactly is going on here?" |
Elaine blinked.
"Pondering things," she answered. Hey, not technically a lie, so he couldn't call her on that one. |
"And I suppose I didn't hear something about flying practice," Loki said with a mischievous little smile. "I do believe it's your turn to learn, dear student of mine."
Elaine paused.
"Wait, what?" she squeaked. |
"Your turn. There's already a decent landing spot for you, so, have at it." Loki smirked. "Try."
Elaine looked at him.
"I'm not going to get out of this, am I?" she asked, resigned. |
"No. This will be good for you." Loki smirked and sat down to watch and advise.
Reluctantly, Elaine got up from her seat and went over to Kae's makeshift landing zone.
"Alright," she said, "what do I do?" |
"Imagine it. Picture yourself flying, and then bend the magic to make it happen." Because yes, that was in fact the easiest way to do it.
It sounded simple enough, which meant that of course Elaine had trouble with it. She had similar trouble with it that Kae was having, in fact, although she fell slightly less often. Slightly. Finally, she managed to at least get herself stable in the air and not fall.
"Good." Loki smiled. "Now see if you can keep yourself there for a minute or so."
Elaine nodded, wobbling in the air and putting her arms out to steady herself. It was much harder than it seemed, and suddenly she had a lot more respect for what Tony was able to do.
"Good." Loki waited until she was down. "Now do it again."
"Again?" Elaine said plaintively. She pouted a bit, but set to work practicing.
Loki kept track of her, not even commenting when Kae took a nap next to him. Clearly she was exhausted from practicing.
Elaine's flying slowly became less 'flopping fish' and more actual controlled flight. Finally, she collapsed on the couch, massaging her temples.
"Good improvement," Loki said, looking at her. "So how did you picture yourself doing that?" Because everyone seemed to have a slightly different way of doing it.
Elaine couldn't help but flush a little.
"There was this movie I saw when I was a kid," she said. "Gods, this is embarrassing... but the movie had fairies in it, so I kind of just... Thought about that." |
Loki blinked. "The wings?" he asked, curious. That thought had never even occurred to him, and it was kind of fascinating.
Elaine nodded.
"Yeah, sort of. More like the effect that the wings created. The smooth, agile flight." She was still a bit pink. "It's silly, I know." |
"Not at all," Loki said. "It actually makes more sense for a human to think of it that way." He grinned briefly. "I'm impressed."
"Thanks," Elaine said. She settled on the couch and laid her head on the back of it. "And I'm done for now."
"Rest," Loki agreed, settling Kae on the couch as well and getting up. He was planning on getting Bruce and Steve to go collect the girls.
