In the kitchen, Bruce was helping with the dishes quietly, just drying them as they were handed to him. Because he knew very well that Kae would get annoyed if he tried to was them himself.
Kae let him dry the dishes before she helped put everything away.
"You are happy about this, right?" Kae looked over at him. "Or at least okay with it?" |
"I'm... not unhappy about it," Bruce said. And he was being honest. "I'm still worried, but... I'm not upset over it."
Kae nodded. That would have to be good enough.
"I'm due to go back to the mansion in a few days," she said quietly. "School starts again for the kids soon, and I told Xavier I'd keep helping out unless something came up." |
"I'd call this as being 'something came up,'" Bruce pointed out. He sighed. "I'd prefer if you didn't, at least after a certain point."
"I know. I agree it's not a good idea. I'll go for a few more months, at least, but I won't train with Logan, and I won't be able to help the X-Men. It's probably safer that way." Kae scowled briefly at that. she knew it was for the best but she didn't much like it.
"I don't like it," Bruce said. "I want you to know that. But I know I can't stop you if you still want to go, so I just want you to be careful."
"I will be." Kae finished putting everything away and headed into the living room to watch a movie. Or watch Clint playing video games. She was already making concessions, she didn't think she needed to stop helping out at the school just yet.
Bruce nodded and let her go. He knew that was the best he would get for now. He would, however, send Xavier an email about the situation and ask him to keep an eye on Kae.
Kae settled onto the couch, glancing over at Bruce with a raised eyebrow to see if he was going to sit or go back down to the lab.
Bruce paused a moment before going over to settle himself next to her. He could leave the science be for one evening."
Kae curled into his side contentedly. Fortunately she wasn't really upset at him, and she figured this was only the beginning and they'd better enjoy the peace while it lasted.
Bruce put an arm around her and pulled her close. He had a very similar thought, to enjoy the peace while they had it.
A few days later, Kae had packed a bag and was heading back to the Xavier mansion. "I'll be back in a few days," she told Bruce.
"Alright," Bruce said, a bit reluctantly. "Make sure to call, alright? I want to make sure you're alright."
"Don't worry, I'll call." Kae smiled a bit. "I'll be back in a few days, Bruce. Nothing's going to happen."
"Don't tempt fate that way," Bruce said. He hugged her gently and gave her a kiss. "Be safe, alright?"
"I will." Kae smiled a bit and kissed him again. "I'll call you tonight after I get there."
"I'll be waiting, then," Bruce said. He kissed her one more time and then stepped back so she could go.
Kae nodded and headed down to the car to head back to the school. It was late ish when she got there, late enough that most of the kids had already eaten and gone off to do their own things. So Kae started looking for Xavier, waving to Logan and Ororo when she passed them.
Xavier was in the library, but wheeled his way out when he felt Kae's mind.
"Welcome back, Ms. King," he said, smiling a bit. "I believe some congratulations are in order?" |
"Yup." Kae grinned. "It's good to see you again, Professor." She hesitated a moment. "And while I'm glad to see you I know Bruce and possibly Tony already emailed you. So how pushy are they being?"
"Very," Charles said, chuckling a little. "Although I do believe it's understandable, in this instance."
Kae twitched. "Understandable and driving me up the wall," she muttered. "Tony didn't even want me to come."
"As I understand it, Anthony has had very little by way of family in his life," Xavier said. "It does not surprise me that he would cling so hard now."
